*~*Chapter Four*~*

Belarus shivered as snow began to fall softly around her, making the snow-covered trails a bit harder to find. Pulling her arms closer to her chest, she breathed out of her mouth to see her breath. It swirled around the air in front of her. Belarus rubbed her hands together.

It had been getting colder and colder lately. Lighter fluid was becoming more and more precious and therefore more expensive on the black market. (Belarus wondered if it should even be called the black market anymore, as it really was the only kind of market.) Anyways, she was running out of money. Luckily, she knew how to start fires on her own. That of course didn't mean Belarus didn't want the lighter fluid. It made starting fires and keeping her and her brother warm less of a worry.

As Belarus got out her purse to count her money, she heard a strange noise. A chill ran down her spine. These days, you could never safely say what exactly was out in the woods, especially during the night. Trying to ignore the sound, Natalia started counting her money. "Forty thousand.." she mumbled. "Not enough..." There had been extreme inflation in what was left of the economy. Belarus sighed straightened her hat. At least some (normally greedy) people hung onto the value of paper money. Belarus put her purse back into her coat.

Upon approaching the remains of St. Petersburg, Belarus felt a lump forming in the back of her throat. She remembered when it was still together. When St. Petersburg had been one of her, in her opinion, the grandest city in the entire world. When she, Russia, and Ukraine had strolled down the streets, discussing the cold and laughing about something that now seemed so distant.

The tears came before Belarus could even attempt to stop them. She shivered again as her tears began to roll down her pale cheeks. It burned. Belarus thought of when Ukraine had doted on her for weeks after she had been in the cold for too long. She thought of when Ukraine would secretly speak to her in Belorussian, to make sure she never forgot her own language. When Ukraine gave her some of her own food even though she was starving.

Belarus's entire body began to shake as she broke out into loud, painful sobs. Why Katy have to leave? Ukraine had promised she'd always be there. "What made you go?" Natalia whispered. "Why now? We need you back." Belarus whimpered and started sobbing again.

Wiping away the burning tears Belarus ran over to a nearby bench and sat down to compose herself. Taking a deep breath Belarus realized how much she truly missed her sister. She didn't even realize that someone was now standing in front of her.

"Miss?"

Belarus ignored the person in front of her and continued to attempt to calm herself.

The person in front of her bent down and tried again. "Miss, are you okay?"

Belarus froze and started crying once more. The man's voice was soft and kind, but strong. He also had a Ukrainian accent. He reminded her too much of Katyusha.

"I-I'm sorry! Did I do something wrong?" He asked. Belarus was rather surprised about how he, a stranger, actually sounded concerned.

"No, I'm sorry; you've done nothing wrong." Belarus responded. "It's just... your voice kind of me reminded me of sister's... Uh! N-Not that you sound like a lady!" Belarus silently cursed herself for making herself seem like a fool. She looked up. "It's just that it's kind and sister was Ukrain..." She trailed off.

The man in front of her had soft blonde hair that was a little long. He had a big build, was very tall, and had pale skin. His eyes... well, they looked just like Ukraine's. They were a bright, happy sky blue. The only difference was the small yellow sun in his eyes.

The man laughed. "It's fine. Anyway, allow me to introduce myself: my name is Dmitri Braginski, the country of Ukraine."

"Wha-?" Belarus stopped herself. Perhaps he knew what happened to Katyusha. This was no time to argue. In any case, he just introduced himself, so it would be rude for her not to do the same. "My name is Natalia Arlovskaya, the country of Belarus."
