I spent the next week getting ready for Flash's party. I had started to make some new friends outside of Peter and Gwen and I was starting to feel like a normal teenager. I was waiting on the bottom floor for Peter to come pick me up. I turned when I heard a knock on the door leading out to the sidewalk. Peter stood outside wearing a pair of jeans and a hoodie with the hood pulled up over his head. I gave him a smile and walked outside the door.
"Hey Pay." He said using my old nickname. "You ready to party." He asked trying to sound serious but we both couldn't contain our fits of laughter. I couldn't really see Peter in any kind of partying situation.
"Oh yeah. I'm so ready to be so crippilingly socially awkward I'm going to have drop out of school and live in a van." I chuckled even though I wasn't convinced that that wasn't going to happen.
"You'll be fine. Everybody's going to be flocking to you, trying to be your best friend now that they know you're associated with one of the most famous people in America."
"Oh, so it's not going to be my beautiful personality." I said feigning hurt.
"I'm sure it will be that too." He chuckled but rolled his eyes.
"Let's just leave, please." I whined pulling on his arm. He started following after me. We caught a cab and rode into suburban New York. Flash's house was pretty big. It had a pool in the backyard, which scared me a little bit due to the whole electrocution thing. I just had to stay out of the backyard I guess.
"Hey Payton. I didn't know you were gonna be here." Flash winked once he opened the door for Peter and I. I rolled my eyes but smiled warmly.
"Yeah, Peter invited me. I hope that's okay." I said as we walked into the house.
"It's perfectly fine." He said flirtatiously. I was really starting to feel uncomfortable. No one had every flirted with me before and I didn't know how to handle it. This was one thing training couldn't teach you… unless you want to end up knocking them out. "Everyone's in the backyard. There's food and drinks." He said guiding my outside. I quickly spotted a group of people that I'd become relatively close with over the past week.
"Thanks Flash." I smiled quickly making a dash for the group of people that included Peter. "Hey guys." I breathed out a sigh of relief. I didn't want to embarrass myself further.
"Payton! You made it!" One guy, Ryan, cheered. I grinned and nodded.
"Wouldn't have missed it." I nudged him with my elbow since he was standing right next to me.
"Here, take this." My other friend Melissa said handing me a cup of an amber colored liquid. I had technically been banned from drinking any form of alcohol as a part of S.H.I.E.L.D protocol so I guess I would just have to fake it.
The night progressed without a hitch. I managed to stay away from the pool thus far but it still scared the daylights out of me. Not only did it electrocute me due to the whole lighting thing but I hadn't gone swimming since like eight grade. The thing is I could come in contact with small amounts of water so I could still take showers and stuff but I couldn't be submerged or come in contact with it for prolonged amounts of time. It was weird how it worked but I didn't want to test it too much.
I felt my phone buzz in my pocket. I pulled it out of my jeans and looked at the caller ID. It was Hill. I excused myself from the group of people chattering amongst themselves and went to stand next to the gate.
"Hello?" I answered holding the phone up to my ear.
"Hey, Payton." Agent Hill's voice greeted me through the receiver.
"Hey, Maria. What's up?" I was slightly confused given that she never really calls me Payton and she never really calls me in the first place.
"Nothing much. I'm at a party with some friends from school. You know, trying to gets some leads and stuff." I shrugged knowing I was lying to myself. I had done absolutely nothing to get any information from anyone.
"Yeah that's why I called. I heard there's a pool at this party." She said suddenly sounding concerned, which was rare for her. Most of the time when I talked to her she was all business.
"Yeah. How'd you know that." I scrunched my eyebrows together and looked over the fence to see if there were any cars parked along the street with anyone from S.H.I.E.L.D sitting inside. I did in fact see an all black car that wouldn't been invisible had it not been for the reflective S.H.I.E.L.D logo that was embossed on every car. "Oh, that's how." I grumbled. Why couldn't they just trust me? I could handle myself.
"We're just checking up on you. We can't lose one of our best agents due to a little accident. Remember what happened last time you had too much water." I cringed at the memory as Hill brought it up. I had accidentally fallen in a pool at the training center but someone was able to rescue me. That was actually the first time I met Clint and Natasha. Thankfully I wasn't too hurt but it did sting like hell.
"Thanks. I'll try to keep myself from falling in." I chuckled.
"Payton! What're you doing?" Peter called glancing over at me. I held my finger up indicating to give me a second. He shrugged and went back to his conversation. "I have to go."
"Just call if you need backup." She said before the line went dead. I locked my phone, slid it back in my pocket, and made my way back to my friends.
Later that night I was at the snack table getting some chips and such when I heard the sound of splashing water. I spun around and found several people jumping into the pool fully clothed. They were clearly insane. I rolled my eyes and went back to the food. "Payton!" Peter's familiar voice made me turn around again. He was sopping wet, his glasses covered with dropplets of water and his brown hair sticking to his forehead. I started to panic as he walked toward me. He walked up to me with a goofy smile plastered on his face.
"What're you doing Peter?" I asked adding a slight lilt to my voice to make it sound less serious. He grabbed my wrist and started pulling me toward the pool. I resisted as much as I could. He didn't give up though. Soon enough I felt a pair of arms wrap around my torso lifting me up and throwing me over their shoulder. I could tell it was flash due to the immense strength that it must've taken to just pick me up like I was a sack of flour.
"Guys please, I don't know how to swim." I bluffed and started hitting Flash's back. I knew that I could get out of this but that would require I bust out some high level martial arts and I knew that would cause a scene and jeopardize my cover.
"Don't worry, I've got ya." Flash chuckled trying to sound reassuring yet flirtatious at the same time. It didn't work. I was too busy fearing for my life to notice his failed attempts at flirting.
"Flash, please." I begged gripping onto his shirt for dear life.
"C'mon, Pay. Have a little fun." I saw him step closer to the water. I started to feel tears pool in the corner of my eyes. Hopefully I got out in time. "Ready?" he asked. I shook my head violently and softly repeated no. "1…" He started to count.
"Flash, really. Let me down please."
"Flash! It's not funny please just let it go!"
"3!" I braced myself for the impact but it never came. The feeling of shock I was expecting vanished when I felt Flash set me back down. No way. It worked. I opened my eyes and saw utter chaos. I was sat in the middle of a bunch of teenagers running around like chickens with their heads cut off. There were red and blue lights flashing behind the fence along with sirens. I started cursing to myself when I saw that I was now the only one still in the backyard. I heard the yelling of voices coming from inside the house toward the backyard. If I got arrested Fury would probably not only suspend me but I'd probably be off the Avengers. That wouldn't good. I wasn't technically a full member yet. I was kind of on a probationary trial status.
I quickly hopped up and started to run toward the fence. I hopped and grabbed onto the top starting to pull myself over with ease. "Agent! Stop right there." I suddenly froze and turned to see Coulson walking out of the house with another agent walking behind him.
"Coulson? What're you doing here?" I asked swinging my legs over the fence and landing softly on my feet.
"Here to save your ass." He chuckled. I rolled my eyes at his comment.
"I can handle myself." I grumbled pushing past him. I started walking to his car that was parked on the street.
"Don't worry, Fury won't find out about this." Coulson said starting the car and starting the drive to the city.
I rolled my eyes and leaned my head against the cool glass of the window. "It's Fury. He probably knew about it before it even happened."
A/N: Hello friends! Wow... it's been a long time since I updated. I'm so sorry for that and I know that I say sorry way too much in these notes but... yeah. I also know I say that I'm gonna start updating more frequently and I never do but now I'm rededicated to this story and plan on spending a lot more time on it that in the past. Look for the next update soon! Follow and Review! Let me know how you think the story is so far, anything you'd like to see in the future, what you think is going to happen in the following chapters, etc. Just a little disclaimer, this story is most likely not going to contain any major plot points or details from The Age of Ultron so there's most likely not going to be any spoilers but if there is I will make sure to put a disclaimer at the beginning of the chapter but for the meantime it's just focused around the Avengers. Talk to y'all in the next chapter.
