Sarah: yet another old country song. I'm not sorry!

Song: Just to See You Smile

Artist: Tim McGraw

Album: Everywhere

Genre: angst/romance

Pairing: anti-Stefan/Elena, some Damon/Elena towards the end

Note: ALTERNATE UNIVERSE! Stefan is HUMAN! Make up your own minds about if Damon is or is not. Stefan and Damon are not brothers. Also, grab a tissue, my lovelies, you just might need it.

She always had an eye for glittery things and I was far from being made of gold. I'm not talking about flashy jewelry or shiny new clothes. Elena was more into antiques and classic cars. I have no idea how I scraped up the money for that antique necklace she saw in the pawn shop one day, but I got it for her cause I never could quite tell her "no".

Just like when she was leaving Mystic Falls, our home town, and taking a job in Tennessee several hours away. I quit my job so we could be together. I will never forget the bright smile she turned on me when I told her I was coming with her.

Just to see her smile, I'd do anything she wanted me to. When all is said and done, I'll never count the cost, not even now. It's worth everything I lost just to see her smile in true happiness.

When she said time was all she needed, I walked away and let her have her space, though I knew instinctively that this was it for us. Leaving her didn't hurt near as badly as the tears rolling down her face.

And yesterday, I knew exactly what she wanted, when she came walking up to me with him, that blue-eyed, dark-haired man I had never seen before. I could see the pale blue gem on her left hand and the joy in her face when she looked at him. I told her I was happy for her. Given the chance, I'd lie again.

Just to see her smile, I'd do anything she wanted me to. When all is said and done, I'll never count the cost, not even now. It's worth everything I lost just to see her smile like that again.

She sure smiled hugely when I said that lie, though it cost me the woman I will love to my dying breath. Even with a price like that, I don't regret knowing her, loving her. That stranger, who she introduced as Damon, had a glint in his eyes that reminded me, oddly enough, of a predator. But when he looked at her, that dangerous glint softened into a brightly burning love. I know he'll cherish her forever, though I'm not even sure he's entirely human, given the tales passed down in the founding families of our hometown. Well, it doesn't matter anymore, her heart belongs to him now.
