War for Mobius

Chapter 26

Sally looks over the faces in the room, "Alright people, this is it. Robotnik has an all powerful super weapon and he plans on using."

A hologram projects from the computer showing the flying fortress. The princess continues, pointing at the machine in the hologram, "This mobile, flying fortress protects the weapon. We unfortunately don't know where in this...monstrosity the weapon is located. However eyes of this thing looks suspiciously like the end of a gun. That's likely where the blast will come from."

"Eyes?" one of the overlanders asks.

"Yes," Rotor answer, "Either for the psychological effect or because he's stroking his own ego, the Death Egg seems to look like Robotnik's face."

NICOLE spins the hologram to demonstrate. Surprisingly enough the resemblance to Robotnik's face is almost uncanny.

Sonic snorts, "His mug was horrifying enough, now if shoots lasers?"

A small chuckle ripples through the room.

"Unfortunately," Kalzier brings attention back to the team, "Eggman's ugly mug is flying and we don't have the transportation to get everyone up there."

"To top that off, we only get one shot," Rotor continues, "If the first attempt fails, we don't have the time nor means to attempt again."

"Normally we'd assign the mission to a squad, no questions asked," Kalzier explains, "However there's a good chance that those who are sent up there, even if they're successful they won't be able to get back."

"That's why we're asking for volunteers. Those men and women, willing to put aside our differences and save Mobius, or die trying," Sally concludes, "Those who are willing to volunteer step forward."

Even as he takes his the step, Sonic's mind is racing with justifications of either staying behind or flat out running. Deep down he knows with Mobius on the line, he can't just say no.

It's what Uncle Chuck would have wanted…

To his right Bunnie and Tails also step forward. The hedgehog smiles at them, nobody he would trust more on this mission.

On his left Knuckles steps forward. He glances in Sonic's direction and gives him a half smile. Past Knuckles Fiona and Ben step forwards. The blue blur had expected Ben to volunteer but Fiona never signed up for anything. When notices him looking her way she just shrugs.

Behind the Mobians, Spider Troop steps forwards. Nobody is left standing back. All present volunteer.

The Overlander Captain snaps to attention and salutes, a tear forming in the corner of his eye. Next to him Rotor repeats the gesture.

Sally scans over their faces one last time, trying to memorize each one, "Heroes of Mobius, stand tall, stand proud. Today is your finest hour."

"For a Free Mobius!" Sonic shouts, raising his fist into the air.

FOR A FREE MOBIUS!" the others in the room cheer.
