Chapter Eleven: Strings Attached

"This is an inconvenience." The fireplace was still going and made the room hotter with all of the people standing in it. Hinata's eyes traced the figures of her classmates and their parents as well as a few of the previous year's graduates who were all gathered in the small room. The party still raged on outside but inside…inside things were about to get sticky. Hinata turned her attention back to Mrs. Senju who stood in the middle of the room, her hands on her hips and her cheeks red from both anger and a few too many glasses of champagne. Her dark green evening gown clung to her shapely body in all the right places and held her...rather large breasts in a tight embrace. The school nurse, Ms. Shizune—who also happened to be Mrs. Senju's niece, poured her another glass before backing out of the line of fire, her midnight blue gown swishing around her feet as she scurried. "Naruto…You of all people...Ahh, I had such high hopes for you too but that is…How could you let this happen?"

Tenten's boyfriend Neji stepped forward and saluted. "Mrs. Senju, I ask for a pardon on behalf of Tenten Koda. I am prepared to take the punishment on her behalf."

Mrs. Senju turned her eyes to Neji, a small frown on her face. "…I'm sure you are…" She took a sip from her glass and swallowed before looking past Neji at the one who had caused the unfortunate meeting. "Miss. Koda, do you understand that—because of your inane curiosity—you shall be executed by law? Hmm? Do you understand the situation you have presented before not only myself but as well as your childhood friend and your…lover?" The blonde principle stepped toward her. When she was merely a few inches from her she leaned forward. Tenten flinched when she reached out a hand to brush a strand of hair behind her ear. "It is a punishment that cannot be passed to another. Your death…" She leaned closer, "Is imminent."

"B-but I didn't know!"

The older woman smiled softly and stepped back. She threw back the rest of the champagne in her glass and held it out to her niece for another refill before walking back to the middle of the room. "Of course not dear. No one is supposed to know, aside from current and future government agents that is… which you are not." She stopped and tilted her head to the side. "However…Do you recall the saying, curiosity killed the cat?"

"She was just making sure her friend was okay, she didn't know she would stumble upon that kind of information!"

Mrs. Senju's eyes widened in anger as she turned back to Naruto. "Yes, and she wouldn't have had to check on her friends 'safety' had you not taken her to a secluded room that just screamed 'fuck me'!" She pressed her fingers to the bridge of her nose and breathed in deeply. "Honestly, Naruto, I would much rather execute you for doing something so idiotic. You, who has had military training, did not notice a civilian listening in on your conversation? Pathetic."

Shizune sighed and plucked the champagne flute from the woman's hands. "Tsunade, I believe you've had enough to drink." She walked away before the woman could retaliate.

The door to the room opened and everyone turned to watch as Kuranai walked in with a manila folder in her hands. Handing it to Mrs. Senju, she bowed and stepped back. Tsunade sighed and flipped the folder open. "Let's see…Koda, TenTen. 17 years old, Chinese-Japanese American female. 5'7" and 125 lbs. Parents are Nǚ Zhànshì and Michael Koda...Blah blah blah." She flipped through a few pages and stopped. "Okay, collector of antique weaponry…C+ student. No club affiliations…." Tsunade looked up at Tenten, an eyebrow raised. "You…never really stood out much have you?" She didn't wait for an answer and returned to the folder. "Allergic to…huh, well that's something there. Perfect." She snapped the folder shut and handed it back to Kuranai who bowed and took it gingerly. The blonde woman smiled at the group of people in a way that made Hinata shiver. "Well, at least she won't die painfully...Shizune…Grab my medical bag from the car please."

"Yes Ma'am."

From the corner of the room, Shikamaru coughed. "Mrs. Senju, is it necessary for there to be an audience for such an…occurrence?"

The woman's blue eyes darkened and she folded her hands in front of her. "Yes…"She turned her eyes to Hinata and frowned. "It is."

Hinata felt as though she were suffocating. Her best friend was about to die and it was all her fault. Tears formed in her eyes and she squeezed her eyes shut. This couldn't be happening, it had to be a dream.

Tsunade smiled briefly. "In fact I believe this will serve as a lesson…" She gestured to the occupants of the room, "To all of you." Shizune walked back in with the medical bag and placed the handle in the principles hand. The blonde nodded and reached a hand out toward TenTen. "Miss. Koda, if you could take a seat on the love seat for me." When Tenten didn't move she sighed. "Miss. Koda, do not make this difficult. You either walk over on your own, or I will have my subordinates carry you there. Do I make myself clear?"

"I'm not moving. This is sick. You're a twisted old woman! How could you do something like this?!"

Tsunade's eyes narrowed. "Old?" Mumbles echoed through the room and her nostrils flared. When they didn't seem to come close to calming anytime soon she growled. "SILANCE. Neji, Kankuro. Bring her to the love seat. NOW." The two men looked at each other for a second before obeying orders. They didn't have a choice.

"Neji, NO! Please, don't let her do this Please!" The brunette screamed as she tried to get out of their grasp.

Kankuro and Neji sat her down in the chair and held her in place as Tsunade searched through her medical bag. "Hold her tight. We don't want any…Mistakes." She whispered. She pulled out a syringe and a vile filled with a clear liquid and sighed. "This is Morphine. According to your medical history, it could send you into anaphylactic shock which, if left alone, is fatal. Morphine is also known to cause hallucinations as well as feelings of happiness. Hopefully, it will be the same for you."

Tenten's eyes filled with tears. "Please. Please, I won't tell anyone! I promise I won't! Please, just…Please I swear I won't!"

Naruto growled and turned away from the scene as did Ino and Sakura. Hinata covered her mouth with her hands to control her breathing, tears cascading down her face. She watched as Tsunade drew the medicine into the syringe. She watched as she tapped it to get rid of the air bubbles. She watched as she brought the needle closer and closer to Tenten's shoulder…

((A/N: I was so tempted to end the chapter right here because like…IDK I wanted to be an ass but then I was like noooo you guys deserve better for being awesome and stuffs so imma stop breaking up the action and get back to it! 3))

Tsunade paused, needle hovering half an inch away from Tenten's shoulder. She turned her head slowly to face Hinata who stepped forward slowly. "What is it now?"

Hinata's entire body shook and her face grew warm but she inhaled deeply to keep herself calm. "P-please. I'll d-do anything. J-just don't h-hurt her."

The blonde principle raised an eyebrow. "Anything?" When Hinata could only nod her head, she waved the two men away as she tossed the syringe in her medical bag. "Alright. For now, she can keep her life." Tenten slowly rose from her seat and started backing up toward Hinata. Tsunade nodded her head to Kuranai who quickly returned to her side and handed her the manila folder again. "Miss. Hyuga. As of this moment your life, as well as Miss. Koda's life, are being held as collateral. Miss. Koda will be transferred to the Academy and will be enrolled into the Special Ops program. She will also be required to reside with you and your family until graduation."

She rolled the folder up into a tube and tapped it against the palm of her hand. "You and Miss. Koda must graduate and join a government program upon graduation or both of your lives will be forfeit and you will be placed in a government facility for experimental testing. Should Miss. Koda tell anyone of the information she has and will learn in the near future, her life will be forfeit as well as the person she confides in and Miss. Hyuga will be placed in a government facility for the criminally insane…Am I understood?"

Hinata sat on the bed in her room crossed legged as she watched her best friend pace back and forth. They had just gotten back from the party and she hadn't even taken the dress off yet. At this point she didn't even care if she ruined it or not. She could hear her father speaking with Mrs. Senju, their voices raised. It was late, after midnight, so her sister was already fast asleep. For that, she was glad.

"I…I don't understand how this could have happened."

The eldest Hyuga pressed her lips together as she watched Tenten walk over to the bed and flop back on it. "I'm sorry…I don't want this for you…"

Tenten turned her eyes away from Hinata to stare at the wide open closet. "You should've just let me die then…"

Hinata gasped, tears forming in her eyes. She stood up, her back facing the brunette. "I-i couldn't just stand there and watch you die. How could you ask that of me?! Y-you…You're my best friend and i…I can't lose you. I'm sorry for caring." She pulled the door to her bedroom open and walked out into the hallway. Her father was still talking with the principle so she closed it softly, only a small click was heard. She walked closer to the edge of the hallway and pressed herself against the wall.

She heard her father growl, low and deep. "—Why does it have to be a mental facility though? If Tenten ever…Why does Hinata have to be with criminals for the rest of her life?"

Tsunade sighed. "You know just as well as I do that her blood is just as unstable as an Uchiha's. If I were forced to kill Miss. Koda, Hinata would not recover. The facility would be the only place she could go."

"I'm just supposed to sit here and watch this? I'm just supposed to watch my family get torn further apart?"

Hinata heard Tsunade's shoes click against the floor and the front door open. "Just continue doing your job. We are depending on you." And then the door closed.

The blunette breathed in deeply and turned around to go to the bathroom. There was just too much going on tonight, she needed a hot bath and some time to think.

After her bath, Hinata tip toed into her bedroom, clothed in a tank top and her fuzzy bunny pajama bottoms. The light was off and she could see Tenten's form under the covers of her bed and she let out a soft sigh. She pulled half the covers back, making sure not to disturb her friend, and climbed in the bed next to her just like they did as kids. As she was fixing her pillow to get a more comfortable position she felt a tap on her shoulder and froze.

"I'm sorry."

The blunette turned over to look at her friend who held tears in her brown eyes. "It's okay. We're in this together, remember?"

Tenten nodded and reached out her hand which Hinata readily took and held. They both closed their eyes and fell into dreams of an unknown future.
