1 Year Later
Takano stood at the grave of the man who'd captured his heart not once but twice. He held a bunch of baby romanticas in his hand and he gripped them so hard his knuckles turned white. He couldn't believe a year had passed since that day. Tears rolled down his cheeks as he looked up to the sky, it glowed a warm orange as the sun began to set and the warmth began to leave the air. Takano sank to his knees and turned his eyes to the grave, his heart feeling like it was being crushed in his chest. He set the flowers down carefully and slowly closed his eyes, bringing his hands together in a silent prayer.
Shin stood a few metres behind, he was there on Takano's request but he was glad he came, he'd formed some small friendship with the man over the year. Shin knew Takano was not ready to let go of his past and his love for the brunette, but he would wait for as long as it takes and be there for him as long as he was needed.
Takano's amber eyes slid open and he got to his feet, shaking off his trousers. "Ritsu…" He reached out a hand and smoothed the cold stone that told the world his lover had left him behind. He once again looked to the sky and a sad smile played on his lips. "Wait for me." His words were carried away on the gentle breeze and he felt as though Onodera was listening to him, telling him he'd heard, letting him know it was going to be okay. "I love you so much. I'm glad that I could see you once more, even if you disappeared on me again." He wiped more tears from his eyes and glanced over his shoulder to see Shin stood waiting patiently for him. The breeze suddenly picked up, nudging Takano, causing him to stumble a few steps. Shin ran forward and steadied him. "You okay?"
Takano nodded and felt mixed emotions as Shin released his arms. "I can't let him go. Not yet."
Shin sighed and patted Takano's shoulder. "No one said you had to. Just take your time, Takano-san."
Amber eyes stared at Shin. "Why have you been so nice to me?"
Shin smiled and looked down at Onodera's grave, slinging a casual arm over Takano's shoulders. "That's what friends do, isn't it? Help each other and…stuff. You know."
Takano almost found himself laughing and quickly turned away, focusing his eyes on the grave before him. "Onodera would want you to laugh and be happy. Imagine what he'd say to you if he saw that sour look on your face."
Shin backed away as Takano turned on him. "Well he's not here, is he? He's never going to be here because I…because…" He broke off and collapsed to his knees, heavy sobs shaking his body.
"I'm sorry." Shin knelt down in front of him, wanting to take him into his arms and comfort him but knowing that would be too much. "Takano-san I'm sorry."
"No, I'm sorry."
Shin looked at him in confusion. "For what?"
The editor took deep breaths to calm down and placed his palms down on the ground, trying to steady himself. "I can't…be…I mean." He broke off and coughed through the tears before continuing. "You seem to think that…I…we…I can't."
Shin finally caught on to what Takano was trying to say and bit his bottom lip, awkwardly placing his hand on Takano's shoulder. "I don't think that at all. I know you're not over Onodera-san and I know it's going to take you a long time to heal. I just want to be there for you. Nothing more." Shin felt his heart squeezing painfully at his words but ignored it, Takano's feelings were more important.
Takano didn't reply, he knew Shin was lying for both of their sake so didn't press the matter. Instead, he turned so he was sat facing Onodera and once again closed his eyes in prayer. Shin watched as Takano prayed and sat next to him so their knees were lightly brushing, Takano didn't move away from the contact and Shin smiled at that. He also clapped his hands together and bowed his head. He didn't know Onodera very well but what he did know of him was that he was the one and only person Takano would ever love wholeheartedly.
The editor took a deep breath and dipped his head back, allowing the last of the sun's rays to warm his face before it slid beneath the horizon. He let out his breath in a long sigh and took one final look at Onodera's grave. "Sleep well. Onodera Ritsu."
