Caroline and Matt fell into a routine and thankfully Klaus had slowed down on the meddling, but that didn't mean he was giving up.
Her relationship with Matt was comfortable. It wasn't that Matt didn't treat her right. He was sincere, charming and tried his best to keep Caroline happy. But the selfish part of her felt like something was missing.
They had been officially together for four months last Friday and Matt was in the mood for celebration.
He knocked on Caroline and Stefan's front door and Stefan let him in.
"She's still in the bathroom man, come in." Stefan opened the door and let Matt inside.
"How you doing?" Matt asked Stefan.
"Good. I finally have a few days off and I'm trying to take Katherine up to my cabin this weekend."
"Sounds like it should be fun. Are you guys getting pretty serious?" Matt asked him.
"Yeah. We are." Stefan smiled. He didn't want to get into detail with Matt.
"What about you and Caroline? You guys seem to be getting serious." Stefan commented. He was really curious to see how Matt felt about the entire situation and this was the first opportunity he had to ask him about it.
"I'm serious about our relationship it's just I don't know how she feels half the time. I feel like half of her heart is still with Klaus. He still shows up where we are from time to time and he's not making it any easier on her. He is the one who broke her heart after all. It's just painful to see."
"I like you man, but Klaus and Caroline always had this weird thing. I hope it all works out, but I don't think Klaus has any intentions of giving up on Caroline."
It was hard to hear the truth and Matt feared that his concerns were starting to surface. He knew Caroline held deep feelings for Klaus, but he also hurt her badly.
He was trying to be the one to pick up the pieces, but it was hard when she was being constantly reminded of him.
A few minutes later Caroline emerged from the bedroom. Matt and Stefan's eyes lit up when they saw her.
Matt grabbed her by the hand and pulled her into his embrace.
"You look beautiful." He told her as he placed a kiss on her cheek. "Are you ready?"
"I am." She smiled at him, but it didn't quite reach her eyes.
He led her out of the apartment and into his car. He opened the door for her and sighed as soon as he took the drivers seat.
"Matt?" She looked at him questioningly. She knew he wanted to say something.
"Are you serious about our relationship, Caroline?"
She hesitated, but he silenced her and begun to speak again.
What brought this on?
"I know how you feel about Klaus." He told her. "I know you still love him and I know he has been trying to get you back ever since we started dating. I just want to know if we're ever going to be anything serious or if I have to constantly live in his shadow?"
"You have to understand how hard this is for me –"
"Tell him to back off Caroline."
"Matt please I can't make him just go away because he won't go away." She pleaded with him.
"I'll tell him." Matt said. "I will go to his apartment and I will –"
"I'm leaving." Caroline announced reaching for the door, but Matt placed his hand on top of hers and stopped her.
"You still love him don't you?" He asked with hurt in his eyes. "After everything he has put you through you're still in love with that bastard?"
"Get your hand off of mine Matt." He quickly removed his hand from hers.
"I'm leaving Matt." She told him again. "I think it would be best if we were just friends. I don't see us working out."
She hated to tell him this, but it was the truth. She just couldn't fake a relationship with someone that she didn't feel just as equal for.
"I'm sorry Matt."
"Yeah I am too." He told her.
"It doesn't have to be like this Matt. I like you I ju –"
"You just love him more, I get it." He wouldn't allow himself to look at her.
Caroline sighed and let herself out of the car not wanting to make it even more awkward than it already was.
She opened the door to the apartment and Stefan looked at her strangely.
"That was a fast date." He tried joking with her.
"I broke up with Matt." She announced. "He's really a great guy he's just –"
"I can't say I didn't see that coming Care bear." He smirked.
"I think I just need to stay single for a while." Caroline said. "I just need room to breath and I really didn't get that when Klaus ended things with me. And in all honesty Matt suffocated me."
"He's was too sweet for you anyway Caroline. You need a challenge."
"I need a break." She rolled her eyes at him. "When are you and Kat leaving for the cabin?" She quickly changed the subject.
"Tomorrow morning." He told her. "Stay out of trouble this weekend Caroline. I mean it."
"I'll be by myself. What could I possibly do?" She smiled at him.
"Burn the apartment down. I know how well you cook."
Caroline scowled at him and playfully slapped him across the arm. "I am a fantastic cook thank you very much."
"Okay, okay." He held his hands up in defense. "I guess you're not that bad."
"What do you mean 'not that bad?' I am the perfect cook!"
"Tell that to the cookies you burnt last week." He laughed.
"That was your fault. You were supposed to take them out of the oven. I was in the shower!"
"Excuses, excuses." He wagged his finger.
"Let's just go watch a movie before I decided to kill you." She told him. "Katherine wouldn't enjoy the cabin very much if I murdered you before you had the chance to go."
He laughed the entire way into the living room.
He popped in Caroline's favorite movie and for the first time in a year Caroline's crazy life seemed to calm down, even if it was only for a moment.
AN: I think next chapter I am going to add in a flashback. What do you think?
