WHEN THEY FIRST MET
While his son and friend were getting acquainted with his students, Remus had just finished stocking up on some supplies from Knockturn Alley and had barely rounded the corner of Diagon Alley when someone knocked into him.
He quickly bent down to retrieve his purchases and as he did so, he saw another person's hand reach out to help him pick up the supplies.
"I am so very sorry…I didn't see you coming towards" he heard the owner of the voice say, apologetically. "Oh, I am so clumsy"
Waving away the apology, he put away his purchases and looked up.
Standing before him and looking guiltily was a young witch probably in her early to mid-20s. She had a pale heart-shaped face, dark twinkling eyes, and short spiky hair in a violent shade of violet. She was beautiful.
"Are you ok?" she asked concerned as the man had been staring at her for almost a minute without saying a word.
Pulled out of his reverie by the sound of her voice, he replied with a shake of his head, "Oh, I'm fine…you are not hurt though, are you?"
He gave her a quick once over to make sure.
She nodded in response and then held out a slim hand and as he shook it, she introduced herself with a smile, "Nymphadora Tonks but you can call me Tonks"
"Remus Lupin" he replied with a slight bow.
"Remus? That's such an unusual name" she said, slightly tilting her head to the side.
"So is Nymphadora" was the straight response she got.
She threw her head back as she laughed. "Oh tell me about it…I absolutely detest the name but thanks to my mother who was bonkers enough to give me such a name, I have to live with it…its actually why I prefer to be called Tonks"
"It is not that bad" Remus replied with a smile. He had only just met the woman but she was not only beautiful but an absolute delight to talk to. He usually wasn't this comfortable when talking to a woman as there is always that little voice at the back of his head, telling him that once she finds out about his furry problem, she'd run for the hills. But right now as he chatted with this woman, he found himself wanting to prolong their conversation.
Before he could stop himself, he blurted out "Tonks, would you like to go and get a drink with me at The Leaky Cauldron"
Slightly taken aback, Tonks blinked slowly before her mouth stretched into a smile. "I'd love that very much" she replied.
As they headed towards the pub chatting, Remus hoped that Harry and Lucas would take their time before coming to meet him at the pub as they had planned earlier.
Meanwhile, Harry and Lucas were still chatting with the girls and the trio at the shop.
"So, I have heard a lot about Hogwarts…what's it like?" Harry asked sounding mildly curious, as he took a bite of his liquorice wand.
"Well, it is the same as any other wizarding school, I'd reckon" Ron answered with a careless shrug, never taking his eyes off of the girls.
"Hang on, what school do you lot attend? Because I'm guessing that you all attend the same school, right?" Hermione asked as she glanced at the dark haired boy and his friends. She watched as they all exchanged a quick look between each other.
Harry quickly replied before the girl got suspicious "We attend Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, it's in…"
"In America…yes! I've read about the school" Hermione finished excitedly.
"But you aren't yanks though" Ron said, finally taking his eyes off the girls and directing it at Harry.
"No, we are not. We are obviously British…we just go to school there" Lucas replied, ignoring the girls that had begun giggle.
Neville was less interested in finding out about what school they attended, all he wanted to find out was how the boys knew professor Lupin, maybe either one of them could be Harry Potter.
So he asked with what he hoped was a friendly casual smile, "So, how do you two know professor Lupin anyway?"
The dark haired boy regarded him shrewdly for almost a whole minute, making Neville squirm lightly in his seat before he responded, "He's a friend"
Lucas eyed Neville suspiciously as he said, "Why do you ask?"
Putting his hands up as he felt the air thicken with a tension that he didn't understand, as he had merely been asking a question which he believed was innocent enough, Neville replied, "Nothing, just curious"
"Hey, if you are friends with him, then you must know that he is one of Harry Potter's guardians" Ron said excitedly, oblivious to the slight change in the boys' demeanour. "Any chance that you've met him?"
Lucas quickly glanced at Harry before facing the trio who had eagerly leaned forward to hear their response. Before he could speak, one of the girls had opened her mouth to speak, looking confused as she stared at Harry.
"But he's right…"
Before she could finished talking, Harry glaring at her hard interrupted by saying "We've heard about him but we haven't actually met him face to face yet"
"Oh" Ron said looking rather crestfallen.
"I just realised that we have been talking for almost an hour now and I don't even know your names" Harry said, trying to change the subject and also to finally find out which one of them is Neville.
"Oh, that is true" Neville replied. "Well I'm Neville Longbottom and these are Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger"
"Oh you're Neville" Lucas said carelessly before he could stop himself and earned himself a kick in the shins under the table from Harry.
"You know about me?" Neville asked sounding suspicious.
"No, not really. We've just heard Remus always talking proudly about one of his best students Neville" he replied trying not to wince at the pain after being kicked under the table. Turning to face Neville's other friends, he said, "You guys too"
"Nice save, Lucas" Harry thought to himself as he smiled.
Meanwhile somewhere in a England…
Voldemort sat surrounded by his followers as they cowered in fear, while either trying to avert their gaze or in the case of Bellatrix Lestrange, gazed at him adoringly.
He was seething and they knew it.
"So I assign five different people to find me Harry Potter and none of you have been able to give a positive feedback…" he paused as he looked at each of their frozen and terrified faces before continuing in a deadly whisper. "I am not happy about this"
"My L-lord…we searched around and I even checked in all of the other schools but all to no avail. D-do we really need t-to find him…I mean he is just a boy" one of his seriously stupid followers said, fearfully.
"Crucio!" Voldemort hissed in anger, as he pointed at the idiot that had dared to question his orders. As he watched the man scream and writhe in excruciating pain, he smiled. That actually made him feel slightly better.
Later, after he had dismissed his followers, he thought to himself that finding Harry Potter would be his personal task since his Death Eaters are proving quite incompetent at the job.
Meanwhile back at the Leaky Cauldron…
"So Lupin…huh?" Tonks stated as they sat down with their drinks.
"Do you know about me or something?" Remus asked as Tonks regarded discerningly.
"No but I think I have heard about you" she replied slowly as she tried to rack her brain as to where she had heard his name from.
Remus didn't say reply as he watched struggle to remember to place his name. He realised that she had probably heard of him being a werewolf and as he that realisation dawned on him, he felt saddened as he knew to expect the same look of repulsion and rejection that would come as was his experience with the opposite sex.
"Shame! We could have been good together" he thought sadly as he began to think of an excuse to leave to spare himself the humiliation and rejection that would come.
Unaware of his inner turmoil, Tonks excitedly remembered where she had heard of her date's name.
"Merlin's beard! You're Remus Lupin!" she exclaimed excitedly.
Rather taken aback by her reaction, he said nothing in response.
Unaware of his reaction, she continued excitedly "You're one of the original members of the Order of Pheonix…you fought along Sirius Black and James Potter"
"Yes, I did" her date replied cautiously. "How did you know?"
She leaned in close and whispered inconspicuously, "I am a member"
Surprised, all he could say was, "Oh!"
"But, hang on, Dumbledore has had most of the old members of the Order searching for you and Sirius Black…I mean you are both original members, why are you hiding?"
Seeing the look on his face, had her saying "That was a very inappropriate question, one which is none of my business and not in my place to ask. Sorry, I asked"
Taking in her sincere look and apology, he replied placing a hand over hers, "It's ok…I can understand the curiosity."
Smiling at him, she intertwined their fingers together.
He felt very pleased as he looked at their intertwined fingers before remembering that she doesn't know about his furry problem.
She saw the pleased smile on his face disappear before he gently pulled his hand away from her grasp.
"Look, Tonks…I am not sure what is going on here…" he paused as he rubbed the back of his neck. "But if it is what I think it is and believe me, I really hope it is…there is something you need to know about me before anything can happen with us"
"Bloody hell! You're married, aren't you?" Tonks cried out, her voice tinged with disappointment.
"What? No!" Remus replied, rather taken aback.
With a sigh of relief, she asked softly "What is it? What do I need to know about you because I really do want to get to know you better"
Remus swallowed heavily before saying, "You see when I was child, I was bitten by a werewolf…and so…"
"You were cursed with the same affliction" she finished for him softly.
He kept his eyes downcast as he nodded in reply. He didn't look up as he waited to hear the scrap of a chair being pushed back signifying his date getting up to leave.
Much to his surprise, however, he instead felt her small delicate hand on his cheek.
As he looked up at her smiling face in shock, she said "Did you think that that would have stopped me from wanting to get to know you further?"
"W-well, yes…that has always been the case" he stuttered in reply.
She threw her head back as she laughed softly.
"Well, I guess I am different because learning about your issue hasn't diminished my interest in you at all"
Hearing her say that, made him smile.
"You should know though, that I have it controlled" he said, before he could stop himself.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, I have a friend who made me a potion that stops me from transforming every full moon" he couldn't believe that he was telling her this. He just couldn't help himself, as he felt that he could trust her and not just because she had accepted him for who and what he was.
Meanwhile back at the sweet's shop…
The trio were getting along with the dark haired boy and his friends as they swapped funny school stories.
As they chatted, Hermione found herself staring at the dark haired boy longer than was appropriate and as if he had felt her gaze on him, he looked up, catching her off guard and gawking.
As she glanced away embarrassed, Neville asked "So, you lot never told us your names"
"Yeah, that's right" Ron said eagerly as he glanced at the girls.e
The girls introduced themselves, but the boys however didn't say a word until one of the girls nudged the blonde haired boy.
"Oh, sorry…the name's Lucas"
"Hey, how about you" Ron said, pointing at the dark haired boy as he made no move to tell them his name.
He stiffened slightly, before replying "I'm James"
Hermione frowned slightly as she found it weird that he had hesitated before giving out his name but as soon as James started talking as he asked about their favourite Quiddich teams, she forgot all about her suspicions.
Soon, Harry realised that they had been at the sweet shop for over three hours and Lupin would be waiting for them at the Leaky Cauldron.
He nudged Lucas and told him to wrap up his discussion with his crush as they needed to leave.
Soon the dark haired boy and his friends were leaving but not before he promised to invite Neville over soon to hang out, much to the latter's surprise.
"Those girls are well fit!" Ron exclaimed happily as they began to make their way out of the sweet shop.
Hermione, on the other hand, felt crestfallen as James had barely spared her a glance and when they spoke, he had addressed the entire group. Not once had he tried to speak to her personally. Not even when he left with his friend and harem of girls.
