Chapter 17

The Boy of Heaven and Girl of Night

(During School)

Today the day had started with our group of Persona-users talking amongst each other.

"Man, I wonder what kind of kid I'm going to be paired with today." Rin pondered at the possibilities.

"Well, it is random, so we won't know until we actually see." Michiko responded, walking aside Kai and Hitomi.'I just hope I get paired with a girl.' Michiko thought

"I'd like to be paired up with someone that shares similar interests with me." Hitomi smiled, before looking at her brother.

"What about you, Onii-san?" She asked.

"Senpai already arranged who I'm being paired up with." Everybody look a bit astonished.

"Who?" Daiki asked.

"Yamagishi Makoto" He responded.

"Any reason why she paired you up with him?" Rin asked.

"She said that he's the son of one of her co-worker, but that's all. She didn't give me a specific reason." He replied.

"Well, whatever the reason is, I'm sure today's going to be interesting." They all continued their way towards the school, where they all entered their designated classrooms, and waited for the day to start. They arrived, and took out a sheet of paper, showing the assigned pairs for each groups. Student's names were called, along with the person who they were to be paired with. Afterwards, they headed to their designated room to pick up their partners. Kai, on the other hand, was asked to stay in the classroom, and wait for Mitsuru.

"Hm, should I go to Tartarus tomorrow? Or should I just work on my Social Links?" Kai was mentally thinking of a plan to balance out his Social Links and his exploration time. That was until his train of thought was interrupted by the sound of the door sliding open, revealing Mitsuru and behind her a teal-haired boy.

"Ah, Akira. Thank you for waiting." She said, before gesturing for the boy to greet him. He walked towards Kai, and bowed quickly before introducing himself.

"Nice to meet you, I'm Yamagishi Makoto." He said politely, and looked at Kai's face. "You're that nice person, back from Hagakure ramen." It was then that Kai remembered who Makoto was—he was the boy back from Hagakure, running excitedly with his mother. As well as the 'Aeon Social Link'.

"Nice to see you again." Kai smiled at him.

"You two know each other?" Mitsuru asked.

"Sort of, I met him back when I went to eat out. I'm guessing his mother is the co-worker you were talking about?" Mitsuru nodded before walking close to Kai, and whispering in his ear.

"He's also the son of 'him', please refrain from telling Makoto anything about his father. It's best this way." Mitsuru replied. "Also, his mother is busy today. So, I'll be the one to pick him up. Make sure to bring him back by 4PM." Mitsuru finally said, before leaving the classroom.

"So, what do you want to do?" Kai asked. Makoto stomach began to growl, as his face grew flushed.

"Um..." Makoto paused, trying to think of something to say, as Kai silently laughed, and stood up.

"Wanna get some ramen?" He asked. Makoto smiled at him and nodded his head rapidly. The two headed to Hagakure, where they saw Rin with his assigned partner talking to each other while eating their ramen.

"Hey, Rin."

"Oh Kai, I'm guessing you were thinking the same thing as me." Rin chuckled, and noticed Makoto who was hiding behind Kai.

"Oh, are you Makoto?" Rin said, waving his hand at him.

"N-nice to meet you." Makoto replied. The both of them soon took their seats next to the two, Kai then placed his and Makoto's order before talking to Rin.

"So, I'm guessing that's your partner?" Kai gestured over to the boy sitting next to Rin.

"Yep, his name's Haru." The boy then introduced himself to the two.

"Nice to meet you, Kai-senpai, Makoto-san." He greeted politely. The two of their orders soon arrived after, with Kai having 4 bowls of the special, and Makoto with one. Rin was a bit astonished while Haru was shocked.

"Kai, are you really going to eat all that?" Rin murmured.

"Yeah, is there something wrong with that?" Kai asked, already finishing his first bowl in just a few seconds. He then felt Makoto tugging on his sleeve, as he looked to see what was wrong.

"Something wrong?" Kai asked.

"I'm still hungry..." Makoto said simply. He had already finished his special which shocked Rin a bit.

'No way! He's like Kai!' He said, trying to calm himself down at seeing the young teal-hair boy eat the whole bowl in matters of seconds. Kai handed one of his bowls of ramen to Makoto, seeing him still famished.

"Here you go." Makoto smiled and thanked him, before slurping down his second serving while both Rin and Haru watched dumbfounded.

'Well this is certainly interesting...' Rin simply chuckled lightly in his head, as he continued to watch Kai and Makoto eat.

After they had finished eating at Hagakure, and said their goodbyes to Rin and Haru, they headed to the Paulownia Mall to browse some music albums at Power Records, which was suggested by Makoto. As they headed inside, they saw Hitomi and Daiki browsing some DVD's with their respective partners. The both of them noticed Kai and Makoto soon after.

"Oh, Onii-san!" Hitomi was the first to walk up to him, with an innocent look on her face. Kai knew that face—it's the face that Hitomi makes whenever she wants something.

"Um, Onii-san. Would you be kind enough to buy me True Goddesses Reincarnation IV for me?" She said, with a pleading innocent look. This had given Kai an idea.

"If you can score in the top 10 for midterms, then sure." Kai replied and simply smiled. Hitomi who was disappointed, yet eager, nodded her head.

"So, what've you been up to?" Kai asked Daiki.

"Nothin' much..." The three continued their conversation, as they waited for their partners to finished browsing the DVD section.

Kai, Hitomi, and Daiki had finally finished talking to each other, and parted ways. Kai and Makoto headed over to the Naganaki Shrine, and decided to sit down on a bench for a short rest, before heading back to Gekkoukan. The two began to talk to each other.

"I really had a great time. Thank you." Makoto said smiling. Kai was thinking of something to talk about, and noticed the pair of headphones with a mp3 player on his neck.

"Nice headphones, did your mother make them?"

"They're a memento from my father" He said. "My mother gave them to me when I was still a baby. So, I really don't know much about my dad." Makoto then began to stare at the sky.

"Where is he now?" Kai asked.

"Mommy said that dad's in Heaven." Makoto then looked at the Fool. "Do you know where Heaven is?"

"I see, so I'm not the only one." Makoto seemed relieved, and smiled.

"You seem very mature for someone your age." Kai said, praising him, and patting his head.

"Really?" Kai nodded his head. "Hey, do you think my dad will ever come back?"

"He'll come back, I promise you that." Kai said in a reassuring tone.

"Yeah, it would be great if he could come back." Makoto replied, his expression changed. "I want mom to be happy..." He paused for a moment, before continuing. "She always seems a bit sad. I'd like dad to come back, so that she can be happy, as well." Makoto said grinning. After having that conversation with Makoto, Kai seemed to understand him a bit more.

'Rank 2 Aeon Social Link'

Kai blinked, before checking his watch. He saw that it was almost time for him to bring Makoto back to Mitsuru.

"Um... Can I play with you again sometime? I'd like to hang out with you again." Kai nodded his head, and Makoto smiled. They both headed back to Gekkoukan where he saw Mitsuru at the front gate. Makoto then walked over to Mitsuru, and grabbed her hand.

"Welcome back, you two. How was your day?" She asked.

"It was amazing!" Makoto began ranting about everything that happened today, excluding the talk back in Naganaki shrine. Mitsuru, who was listening to Makoto, simply chuckled, and held his hand, before looking back at Kai.

"Thanks for taking care of him, Akira. I knew I chose the right person to take care of him." Mitsuru smiled at him in gratitude.

"I actually enjoyed his company." Kai replied.

"If you will excuse me, I will be taking him back to his mother. I'll see you back at the dorm." She then left with Makoto. Kai looked on in amusement, before his phone began to ring. He picked it up and answered it.

"Hello Kai, I have something important to tell you." It was Minato. "In just six days, a full moon will occur. And the next Shadow will appear; I suggest that you be prepared."

"Okay thanks, Minato." He then hangs up. It seemed that in just six days, a full moon will occur. As well as another ordeal he will have to be face. He made a mental note to make sure everyone is prepared before that day, and decided to head back to the dorm.

{5 Days Till Full Moon}

Sitting on his bed and looking around the room, Kai began to ponder on what to do for today. He looked at his TV, laptop, and calendar, but couldn't come up with anything. Suddenly, his phone began to ring.

"Hey Kai it's me, Terry. Wanna hang out today?"

"Sure, I got nothing to do. Where are we going?" Kai asked.

"How about Game Panic?" Kai simply accepted, and headed to the Paulownia Mall to meet up with him.

The two of them were enjoying their time at Game Panic. Both of them were playing a fighting game. Well, mainly Terry was.

"Looks like I won again." Terry said pridefully. He had won 4 times in a row, while Kai had lost 4 times in a row.

"I suck at this..." Kai said disappointedly.

"I'm surprised, though. You beat me in a game of cards, but you're losing at a video game." Terry remarked. Kai shrugged in response.

"Well, I never really was great at video games." He lightly chuckled.

"By the way, the card game, how did you beat me again?" Terry asked.

"Like I told you, it was all mere luck..." The Fool simply replied.

"And I will tell you again: Luck is BULL crap." Terry had simply stated.

"You really don't believe in luck?"

"No, not really. Luck is just merely a phenomenon, something that can't be explained."

"I see..." Kai simply replied. He took a deep breath, and looked at the crane game next to them.

"Time to put my luck to the test." He walked over to the machine, put in 250 Yen, and began playing the game.

'He's not going to win anything' Terry thought, lacking faith in The Fool's luck. To his shock, he managed to grab a Jack Frost doll from the machine.

"I thought you said that you're horrible at games." Terry stated.

"Well yeah, but this game required no skill at all. I just relied on my luck, that's all." Kai remarked once more, staring at the doll.

"Kai tell me, what makes you believe in luck?" He asked.

"Huh? Well to be honest, I guess I was born really lucky. There's nothing special about me, but people always seem to talk to me when they have the chance, and I tend to get good grades on my academics. So, I sort of define my luck by that." Kai simply stated. Terry sighed.

"Kai, as far as I see it, I think you're just being modest." Terry inquired. "I studied your behavior for a while, and you seem to act like any other teenage boy. It doesn't actually explain why you believe in luck."

"Sorry..." Kai replied.

"No need, I've actually enjoyed today. However, that doesn't mean we're even, since you were at an disadvantage today."

"Um, okay I guess..." Kai felt his relationship with Terry had improved.

'Rank 2 Fortune Social Link'

He blinked rapidly, before looking back at Terry.

"By the way, are you going to keep that Jack Frost doll?" He asked. Kai shook his head.

"Do you want it?" He gestured his hand towards him.

"Nah, I'm not into that stuff, was just wondering." Kai retracted his hand, and looked back at the doll once more.

"I think I might just give this to Hitomi; she likes these kind of stuff." He replied. The two of them continued to hang out in Game Panic 'til dark. Then they headed back to the dorm.

(Late Night)

Kai had time before he had to go to bed; he at first, decided to study for a bit. But something kept bugging him, as if something was calling him. He decided to head up to the rooftop, while everyone was fast asleep. He walked outside to the roof, feeling the breeze of the cool air, and noticed a familiar figure. Kai walked up and stood next to her. She then smiled, looking over at him with her grey eyes.

"Why hello there, Lugh..." She greeted him, taking off her beret and bowing down formally.

"Good night, Morrigan..." Kai replied back to her smiling. He was the kind of guy to act friendly towards anyone, no matter what kind of person they are. A faint blush appeared on her face.

"My, aren't you the charmer tonight..." She joked. Kai tilted his head at her response, confused on what she meant. "I see you're still as dense as always too. But that's what makes you unique, after all..." She smiled at him, then stared at the moon. It was glowing bright tonight.

"The moon is beautiful tonight. Don'tcha think so?" She asked him.

"Yeah, I guess..." He said, staring at the moon as well. She then leaned on his shoulder, and closed her eyes.

"I remember when we used to do this a long time ago. You letting me rest on your shoulder like this." She said, blushing a bit, before opening her eyes and looking at him.

"Hey, Lugh.."

"Kai..." He interrupted her.

"Excuse me?" She inquired.

"My name is Kai Akira, I don't know why you keep calling me Lugh. But that isn't my name. So, from now on, I want you to call me Kai, not Lugh." Kai stated. She looked at him in shock for a few seconds, before she laughed quietly.

"Very well, Kai-sama." She smiled at him; in return he smiled back. "Tsukiko..."

"Tsukiko... Tsukiko Fukushima, that is the name given to me in this life." She replied to him. Kai had stared at her for a bit; she was a bit taller than his sister, around 5'4'', he had guessed. She was also very beautiful; despite having a bit of a scary look.

"Oh, could you perhaps be falling for me already?" She said, with a mischievous look. She covered her mouth with her hand to hide her laugh. Kai tilted his head once more in confusion, and shrugged simply. "Oh, I see. Well it doesn't matter for now. Sooner or later, you shall remember everything." She smiled once more, before changing her expression. It was a crestfallen look. "I'm afraid this is all the time I have to spend with you today. I wish we could talk a little longer..." She whispered, about to cry.

"Why don't we hang out some other time? I'm sure we can hang out next time at the mall or the station." She smiled at his response, and winked at him, before walking backwards. She was about to jump.

"I'll be looking forward to it. My dear, Kai-sama." She then jumped off.

"Hey, wait stop!" Kai shouted, but saw that she was gone. Instead he saw a raven flying towards the moon. He began to process the events that happened tonight. He met the girl again, known as Morrighan, whose actual name is 'Tsukiko Fukushima.' She told him about things he didn't understand, and finally she jumped off the rooftop, and possibly became the raven that was flying away. However, he was too tired to think, and decided to head to bed for today.

"I'll think about it tomorrow. For now, I might as well get some sleep." He said to himself, and headed back into the dorm, and towards his room, falling asleep soon after.
