Chapter 7: Past Shadows
Previously (with hints at what's to come): Ivy continued to struggle to come to terms with her eating disorder but has Dixon caught on? After the attack Adrianna pushed Navid away, straight into the arms of a certain police officer. Naomi told Max he was the father of her unborn child, how will he react when he finds out the truth? Annie blames herself for what happened to Ade and is determined to protect her friends from whoever is sending the mysterious messages, whatever the cost. After losing everything Dixon relapsed, but will he be able to stop himself from gambling again? Silver is dealing with her cancer and has started seeing josh despite her true feelings towards Dixon. Teddy has still not returned to D.C. but does he still have a relationship to return to?
Liam Court wasn't used to feeling nervous, as he rarely did anything he didn't want to, or that wasn't in his control. However as he waited for his potential client to arrive he felt his stomach twist. He really needed this to go well, being arrested for terrorism had damaged his reputation and if this pitch didn't go well than he would probably never get his business going again. Since reopening he had sold a grand total of 1 board, and that was to Ivy. And he had given it to her for free as she had been the one to set up this interview with one of the guys working with her team. If this worked out, he was going to owe her big time. The only problem was that he isn't much of a people person, and interviews weren't really his forte.
He saw a slightly balding middle aged man cross the road and head towards the shop. Crap, he's early Liam thought to himself as he began frantically checking that everything was in order. He turned and smiled a little over enthusiastically when the man walked through into the building, silently cursing himself he held out his hand, "Hi I'm Liam Court."
"Hi Liam, I'm John." His chilled manner immediately made Liam relax too.
About an hour later Liam saw John out the shop, he couldn't believe how well it had gone. John had practically told him he had the job, he just needed to meet with his college. Finally everything was coming together, he was marrying the love of his life, he no longer had a looming prison sentence and he may just have saved his business. Everything was perfect and his was determined not to let anything destroy this for him.
"Ok next time I take you to the hospital we are stopping for coffee before hand." Annie told her friend as she dropped her full cup from the hospital into the nearest bin as they walked past.
"I think I've just got used to the stuff," Silver laughed taking another sip. "But I promise next time we will stop on the way."
"I've been meaning to ask you something," Annie said as they sat down in the waiting area. "I want you to be a bridesmaid for Liam and I."
"I was wondering when you would ask!" Silver squealed excitedly hugging her friend.
"And as my bridesmaid would you please come with me to this wedding dress shop," Annie begged. "Naomi is dragging me there and I need you for back up, I can't keep her under control by myself!"
"I'd love to," Silver giggled.
"I want to invite Ade too but I'm not sure if she'd want to come at the moment," Annie confided.
"I think she would appreciate being invited, but I doubt she'll come," Adrianna had spent most of her time locked in her room. "I can't even imagine what she's going thorough."
"Yeah, and I can't help but feel like it's all my fault." Annie said before she could stop herself.
"What do you mean?" Silver studied her friend, "How is it in anyway your fault?" Annie didn't stay anything, she didn't know if she should tell her, instead she just looked at her with big scared eyes. "Annie what's going on? What's wrong?"
"Okay." Annie couldn't keep it to herself any longer, "Well about two moths ago I started getting these phone calls, they would hang up as soon as I answered, I thought it was just a joke. Then I got these texts, there was a picture of Ivy surfing when we were at the beach, Liam leaving the court and one of Ade."
"Why didn't you show anyone these?" Silver asked as Annie showed her the photos.
"I don't know, I thought someone was just trying to scare me." She admitted worried that Silver would blame her too.
"How do we know that's even connected to Ade's attack?" Silver thought out loud, "I mean nothings happened to Liam or Ivy."
"Do you have any idea who sent them?" Silver asked desperately wanting to help.
"Patrick." Annie replied quietly biting her lip.
Silver shook her head, "look I know the man is a complete sleaze bag but do you really think he is capable of this?"
"He had Mark falsely arrested, who knows what he is capable of."
It was midday when Navid was woken up by the sound of knocking on his door. He dragged himself out of bed stifling a yawn and opened it still in his pyjama bottoms. "Ade!" He exclaimed in shock, immediately becoming aware of what he looked like.
"Hi," She sounded nervous. "Can I come in?"
"Umm yeah come in," he said not quite over the shock of seeing her for the first time since she had broken his heart.
"I think we need to talk." He nodded but said nothing so she continued, "Navid I love you, I don't want to break up, I don't want space. I want you."
"So why did you runoff like that?" Navid demanded, his head spinning.
"I'm sorry I was scared." Adrianna needed him to listen to her, she couldn't loose him.
"You can't treat me like that!" Navid shouted, "You can't disappear and break up with me out of the blue-"
"I didn't break up with you."
"-And then expect me to take you back just like that!"
"I didn't break up with you." She repeated.
He stared at her for a while, "you didn't?"
"No. I will never break up with you." She said moving closer to him, "There's something I need to tell you, something happened the night of the engagement party." Tears streamed down her face as she told him the story and when she was done he wrapped his arms around her never wanting to let her go.
Right Naomi stay calm she told herself, just tell him the truth. She walked purposefully towards Max who was sitting on their couch engrossed with something on his laptop, but just as she reached him she turned around and walked in the opposite direction, "Nope can't do it." She muttered to herself.
"Honey are you alright?" Max said noticing her strange behaviour and looking up from his computer.
"Yep fine," Naomi flashed him a grin, "I'm about to call Liam about wedding stuff." She knew she was acting weird but she couldn't help it, and she did have to call Liam to sort out a few wedding details. Although it was Annie she was supposed to be calling but Naomi was avoiding her. She didn't want more questions about whether or not she had told Max the baby wasn't his. And then there was the whole having to tell Jordan thing, Annie would surely be asking about that. Naomi figured she should tackle Max first before she brought the real father into the equation. Sighing she pulled out her phone and dialed Liam's number.
Dixon held his breath as he knocked on Silver's door and prayed she was in. "Hi," she said sounding surprised as she opened the door, they hadn't spoken since their argument at the engagement party.
"Can I come in?" Dixon asked flashing a small smile and resisting the natural urge to pull her closer. He hadn't realized how much he had missed her.
"Yeah sure." Silver said trying to hide how much she wanted to kiss him right there.
"Okay, I just was to say I'm really sorry." Dixon started, "I have been the worst friend ever, you've been dealing with so much and I'm so proud of how you've handled everything. I acted like such an idiot and I'm really sorry I haven't been here for you. But I want to be, if you'll let me."
"I forgive you," Silver grinned and tears stung her eyes, "I've missed you so much."
"I've missed you too," Dixon said pulling her into a hug, his own eyes wet with tears of relief. "But there's something else I wanted to tell you." He took a deep breath, "I know I said that night we hooked up meant nothing to me but I lied. I felt something Silver, I still feel something."
Silver backed away, her head spinning. I felt something too! She wanted to scream at him, but she was with Josh now. This wasn't fair to him. "Look Dixon," his heart sank. "That night meant a lot to me too, but I'm with Josh, and I really care about him." She trailed off unsure how to continue, "I don't want to lose you as a friend."
Her words stung and the feeling of rejection overwhelmed him but he couldn't lose her for good. He wouldn't do anything stupid, "you aren't going to lose me I promise." He forced a smile, "I can do friends."
Relieved she hugged him tightly, although both of them knew it was going to be tough to hide their true feelings.
Annie sat alone on a bench at the top of the beach, she was waiting for Liam to finish at the Offshore. She tilted her head towards the sun enjoying it's warmth, she loved this spot, it was always so peaceful. Her phone buzzed in her pocket ruining in the moment, she sighed and pulled it out. She faulted when she was who the message was from, but she needed to know what it said. She watch the screen as a picture of Dixon out for lunch with her last week slowly loaded and the message below read 'Hope Ade's okay x'. Annie struggled to remain calm, she was right, it had been this guy that attacked Ade. It was all her fault. This could mean her other friends were at risk too, they might end up in hospital as well. She couldn't let that happen. She had failed to protect Ade but she would protect everyone else. Whoever this guy was, Patrick? Campbell? Jasper, Jeremy, they clearly wanted to get to her. The answer was so simple, if they no longer had anything to do with her than they would be safe.
"Hey Annie!" Ivy's voice made her jump, she was surprised to see her and Teddy coming towards her, both in wet suits.
"Oh, hey," she said unenthusiastically.
"We were just about to grab something to eat if you wanted to join us?" Teddy offered ignoring her tone.
"I can't I'm meeting Liam,." Annie replied trying to sound as rude as possible, she had to push them away, it was the only way to keep them safe.
"Okay, well we should catch up soon I feel like I haven't properly seen you in ages." Ivy said. Why weren't they getting the message.
"I can't Ivy." She snapped, it hurt to treat her friends this way but what choice did she have?
"Why?" Ivy demanded clearly upset by Annie's treatment.
"I've got better things to do." Annie walked away from them as quickly as she could towards Liam who just pulled up. "How was the interview?" She asked as she hopped into the car and gave him a quick kiss. He grinned at her and she watched him talk happily about his business. She was going to have to find a different way to protect Liam because she could never give him up.
"Navid!" He winced as he heard a familiar voice call his name from across the street, this was not going to be fun. "Hi!" Kat grinned as she reached him, "How are you?"
"Kat what do you want?" He demanded causing her to stop in her tracks.
"What do you mean?" She asked, "Surely after that kiss it's pretty clear what we both want." She did her best to sound seductive.
"I was drunk. That was a mistake." Was all Navid could think to tell her.
"No. No it wasn't a mistake." Kat said anger rising in her voice, "it was love."
She's deluded, Navid thought to himself, how had he not seen it before? "Kat I'm sorry of I gave you the wrong impression," he said carefully. "That kiss was a mistake, that's why I stopped it. I don't love you, I love Adrianna."
"How can you love her after she dumped you like that?" Kat yelled causing several people to stare.
"She didn't dump me. It was complicated." Navid tried to calm her down, he didn't want to make a scene, "Ade and I have worked things out."
For a moment it looked as if Kat were going to cry, but that look was gone in a second as anger replaced it. "You're going to regret this," she spat and a faint flicker of a smile played on her lips as she walked away.
Navid threw his hands back in frustration as he watched her storm off, how had he not realized that she was crazy? How had been so blind? He knew he had to tell Ade about that kiss, but he didn't know how, it would only hurt her.
Teddy sat on Silver's bed massaging his sore arm, it was aching from tennis and surfing all day. He had decided to make the most of the beach whilst he was still in California.
"So Shane called again," Silver said sitting down next to him.
He sighed, "I'll call him back later."
Silver doubted he would, "Can you remind me again why you are ignoring your boyfriend?" She said sarcastically.
"I'm not ignoring him." Teddy insisted, "I've just been busy lately."
"Busy doing what?" Silver wasn't going to let it go, "seriously Teddy what's going on?"
He remained silent for while but then gave in, "it's just things have been going great between me and Shane. But I hardly know anyone in D.C. my whole life is about him. I miss going out with my friends, I miss having my own life."
"You need to tell him how you feel." Silver said placing a comforting hand on his shoulder, "You'll meet people in D.C. eventually and you'll have a new life, one that includes Shane but isn't completely about him."
"Ugh your right," he admitted. "How are you always right?"
"It's a gift," she giggled checking her phone. "That's weird, Annie just cancelled her dress fitting tomorrow, she hasn't even said why. Naomi pulled a lot strings to get that slot she is not going to be happy."
Teddy shrugged, "I saw her at the beach earlier, she was acting strange. She was actually quite rude, Ivy was pretty upset."
"That doesn't sound like Annie," Silver said remembering their earlier conversation, it had to be connected. "Don't be too hard on her she has a lot going on at the moment."
"Don't we all?" Teddy pointed out as he handed Silver her medication, he couldn't think of any justifiable reason for Annie's behavior.
Silver made a face but took the pills and went to grab a glass of water.
"So, where to next?" Adrianna smiled at her best friend as they left the shop each of them loaded with bags.
"How about we grab some lunch?" Naomi suggested, to be honest she was kind of tired. This whole being pregnant thing was really affecting her shopping stamina.
"Ooh I know this really cute Italian restaurant, it's just down the road," Adrianna said enthusiastically. Naomi looked sceptical, she found it hard to believe there was good restaurant that she hadn't found herself, but she didn't complain. She watched her friend as they walked down the road together, noticing the fear that flashed in her eyes each time someone came a little two close.
"You know we can always go home and order pizza?" She offered.
"Why would I want to do that?" Adrianna asked glancing at Naomi.
"Ade stop." Naomi said grinding to a halt in the middle of the street, "Okay don't be mad."
"Why? What have you done?" Ade asked wearily raising her eyebrows.
"Hey! Don't automatically assume I've done something wrong!" Naomi exclaimed, "anyway, Silver told me what happened to you. I can see how shaken up you are and I just want to help."
"I'm okay really," Adrianna half smiled. "I'm not mad either, I'm glad you know. I'm so lucky to have you and Navid." Tears glistened in her eyes as the two girls hugged.
Grinning Naomi squeezed her tighter, then she noticed someone across the road and let her go, "Ugh look who it is."
"Great." Ade's smile faded as Kat noticed them and started to come over, "what does she want?"
"Hey." Kat smirked.
"Well if it isn't the girl that tried to get Liam thrown in jail." Naomi retorted.
"I was protecting her ex boyfriend," Kat snapped turning her attention to Ade.
"Well he's isn't yours to protect. And he isn't my ex, he's my current boyfriend." Adrianna said confidently.
Kat laughed, "that's not what he told me the other night." Naomi rolled her eyes but Kat ignored her, "don't worry though your welcome to him, he wasn't very good."
Adrianna shook her head, "You're lying."
"Ask him," Kat laughed as she stalked off.
"Bitch," Adrianna hissed ready to go after her but Naomi was already dragging her I the opposite direction.
Ivy stood in the bathroom tears rolling down her checks, she had thought she was getting better. But all it had taken was one mean word from a friend and she was right back to breaking point.
"Hurry up Ivy I really need to pee!" Dixon complained opening the door. Panicked Ivy reached for the flush mad at herself for not bothering to lock the door, but Dixon was too fast for her. She screamed at him as he pulled her out the way in time to see the sick disappearing down the toilet. She stood frozen in the corner breathing heavily as Dixon looked around at the empty packets scattered across floor. "Ivy." He started but he didn't know what to say, what to do. It all made sense now, how did he not figure it out before? Maybe he just didn't want to believe it.
Ivy crumpled to the ground as heavy sobs wracked her body, she was so scared, so embarrassed. Dixon sat next to her and wrapped his strong arms around her, she leant her head into his chest and continued to sob. They stayed like that for a long time, Ivy not wanting to leave the safety of his embrace and Dixon trying to understand what he had witnessed.
Eventually Dixon spoke, "Why are you doing this?"
She finally looked at him, only just realising the reason herself, "to stay in control." She paused, "Ever since Mexico everything has been so messed up, I feel like I'm falling. This makes me feel in control."
"I understand," Dixon told her, he felt the same way each time he gambled.
"No you don't. No one does!" She shouted and ran from the room only for him to follow her. She didn't complain when he sat down next to her again. "I'm sorry," she whispered.
"I do understand." Dixon confessed, "I started gambling again. I lost my job, I lost the girl I liked, I have no money, I felt like everything was falling apart around me. So I gambled."
"I really loved him." Ivy finally said out loud. "I loved him enough to follow him to Mexico, and I think the worst part is that at first, I was actually happy. But after a while he became distant, he would vanish for days at a time and when I asked he would just make up some crap about his art. I didn't know anyone but Diego, so eventually I followed him. Turns out he was seeing someone else. But I didn't want to believe it, for months I pretended it wasn't true. Then one day I decided I couldn't do it anymore, so I told him I knew and that he had to choose, her or me. He hit me. He slapped me across the face and told me I was selfish, that I should be happy just to have a piece of him, that no one else would ever want me." She couldn't even look at Dixon, but she needed to get this out, "I couldn't stay after that, so I came home. But everything's different now, I don't belong here anymore."
Dixon was shocked, he draped his right arm around her protectively, "You do belong here. I can help you get through this, you're not alone anymore."
Disclaimer: I don't own anything (but i wish did so I could make them continue the show).
Authors Note: Sorry this took me ridiculously long to update but I've been poorly and I have exams coming up so I haven't really had much time to update. Plus the last two scenes got deleted by accident which is literally the most annoying thing ever. I hope you all liked this chapter, I'm not sure about it but I didn't want to keep you waiting any longer! I've had a couple of requests to have Annie kidnapped or attacked by whoever is sending the messages so that will be happening, I just need on more chapter to build up to it. Please leave a review, I love to hear what you guys think good or bad (although I definitely prefer the good), and if anyone has any good ideas that they don't mind me borrowing I'd love to include them. Again really sorry it's so late but as soon as my exams are over I promise I'll be much quicker. Thanks for reading my story xxx
