Chapter 3: The Great Hall
When I got back to the cabin it was empty. 'Great now they don't even wait for me anymore.' I thought. I then just decided to just sit and wait until we got to the station.
"WE HAVE ARRIVED. PLEASE START GETTING OFF THE TRAIN," I heard the announcer announce.
So I started heading to the closest exit and exited. I then started to look around for Ron and Hermione because I still have to keep up Gryffindor's Golden Boy act to keep people from getting suspicious. I eventually saw them getting into a carriage. I ran up to them.
"Hey guys, where were you?" I asked them.
"Oh, hey Harry we were looking for you. You know just checking the carriages." Said Hermione
'Yeah sure you were' I thought sarcastically. "Oh ok, I was wondering where you guys were when I got back to the compartment and you weren't there."
"Yeah, anyway we should probably get on the carriage now, mate." Ron said to me.
"Okay." So we got on the carriage and were heading to Hogwarts. The whole way there Ron and Hermione were talking to me, but I was just pretending to listen. I was actually thinking of how I was going to try and get out of having to go to Sev's chambers with Draco this evening. 'Maybe I could say I was really tired and fell asleep. No, Draco will see through it. I guess I'll just go and get it over with.' I looked up as we walked into the Great Hall. We sat in the spot we always do. A few minutes later the first walked in, but the Sorting Hat's song was different:
You might not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see.
For there are more here that are like me.
For I see your true self and judge from there.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where the brave-hearted should,
Judged by their recklessness
But not all is true
For they are the warriors hidden within
You might belong in Ravenclaw
Where the intelligent go.
But that is not always so.
For if you don't know where to go
They will find for you
You might belong in Hufflepuff
Where the loyal will go
Don't judge because they wear their hearts on their sleeves
They are the ones who can always be trusted friends
They will warn you if they feel something bad will happen
You might belong in Slytherin
Where the ambitious go
Judged by a few who turn out dark
They are not what they seem
They are the ones who plan ahead and counts every move twice
Things will change this year for the better I assure
The two who went missing shall return
The Princes for one named after the other
Will come home at last
The heirs return
You can put your trust in me
I won't lead astray
So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're safe in my hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!
The first years all clapped, while everyone else was more hesitant. 'What does that mean?' I looked over to Draco who seemed to be wondering the same thing. We meet eyes and he shrugged slightly so only I would see. Dumbledork then stood up looking a little worried in my opinion, and began the feast.
"I wonder what that was about." I said to myself not realizing anyone else could hear me.
"I don't know Harry. Maybe we should keep an out. You know something bad happens every year. Maybe it's this return of the heirs, thing this year," said Hermione.
"Yeah well even if it is I just want a normal year this time." 'Cause that is so going to happen. Especially with Dumbledore's meddling, and then I bet you two are going to get me involved anyway.' I thought to myself.
"Yeah, but do you really thin…," Ron started but was cut off as Dumbledore was making his announcements.
"Welcome, or welcome back to Hogwarts. I would like to make a few start-of-term announcements. First is that first years are not a loud in the forbidden forest, and a few of our older years would do well to remember this as well. No magic is a loud in the corridors in between classes. Quidditch try-outs will be held the second week of school, and finally I would like to introduce your new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Ms. Dolores Umbridge. Now I would like to wi…" Dumbledore was cut off by Umbridge clearing her throat. He turned to look at her. "Would you like to say something?"
"Why yes headmaster. Thank you." She got up and walked around the table where everyone could her, and her atrocious pink outfit. 'Seriously who wears that much pink it is truly horrible.' I blinked at what I just thought and realized that it sounded exactly like something Draco would say. I then tuned back in towards the end of Umbridge's speech.
"…because some changes will be for the better, while others will come, in the fullness of time, to be recognized as errors of judgment. Meanwhile, some old habits will be retained, and rightly so, whereas others, outmoded and outworn, must be abandoned. Let us move forward, then, into a new era of openness, effectiveness, and accountability, intent on preserving what ought to be preserved, perfecting what needs to be perfected, and pruning whenever we find practices that ought to be prohibited." 'What is she talking about? I really should stop zoning out so much.' I turned towards Hermione and asked.
"What does that mean?"
"The ministry is taking over Hogwarts," she said while looking me straight in the eyes.
'Oh great just what I need.' I looked back down at my plate and, decided to head out a bit earlier.
"Hey guys I think I'm going to leave a bit early tonight," I said.
"Okay Harry. Are you feeling well?" Hermione said in a concerned voice though I could see she really didn't care.
"Yeah, I'm fine. See you guys later."
"Yeah bye mate."
I walked out of the Great Hall and headed to the Room of Requirements early even though I had 20 minutes before I was supposed to meet Draco.
20 minutes later…
I heard the door open, and looked up. I saw Draco coming in.
"Hey, are you okay?" he asked me.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I said not really sounding like it.
"No, you're not, but you won't tell me, so then I going to bug you until you give which will be approximately 10 to 15 minutes later. Then you tell me what's bothering you. I help you feel better, and then I forcefully drag you down to Sev's rooms because you hate going down there, and to which I will reply "I'm only doing this to help you." To which you reply "But I really don't need help." In which I say "You do need help." But then you're going to keep arguing with me for approximately another 10 to 15 minutes, and then you will give up because you know that no matter what you say I'm going to win. Then I go back to dragging you back down there 'cause you are stubborn, but know that you won't win. Then we finally get down there Sev is going to heal you, and we're all going to feel better, and have a good time catching up, and just talking. Then we will probably fall asleep there, so then Sev will have to wake us up early so we can sneak back to our dorms without getting caught, and we'll probably end up repeating this whole thing over again," he said with a straight face. "So are you really going to make us go through all that or will you just tell me what's wrong, and CALMLY come down with me to Sev's room, so we don't have to spend like half an hour to an hour arguing."
"You really have put a lot of thought into this," I said without trying to laugh.
"Not really, but you're getting off topic. Now what's wrong?"
'I'm getting off topic. He just spent approximately 10 to 15 minutes explaining all that.' I thought. "It's just all this stuff going on. I mean what was with the Sorting Hat's new song. What does it mean? Oh, and let's not forget that apparently the ministry is taking over Hogwarts, and now Weasel and Granger want me to get all into it, and I just have this feeling that something big is going to happen this year, and our lives will never be the same."
"Okay, well maybe Sev will know what's going on with the Sorting Hat. I can't do anything about the ministry, Weasel, or Granger, but that feeling you have about this year. I have the exact same one. I don't what's going to happen, but it will be big. I can promise you that, and I can promise we'll figure it out together," he said sincerely.
"Anytime. Now to Uncle Sev's room," he said while I groaned.
"Must you ruin the moment?"
"Yes, Harry you know you need to be healed."
"I know. (very dramatic sigh). Let's get the bad part over with."
"Oh, come on you big baby."
So we got up and head to Sev's room.
