on the edge of a lonely red cliff,
over great deserts and valleys,
underneath the eternal sunset sky,

there is a house.

She steps out and walks over to the very edge of this cliff, her home. She removes her mask, and she takes a deep breath, lungs soaking in the smell of red soil carried by the great wind sweeping across the valley. The warmth of the orange sun dances on her features and casts long, dark shadows behind her.

It was here—three years to the day—that she had first seen those majestic rock formations without a shield over her eyes, felt the real desert breeze without protection, smelled and tasted the summer air without filters.

And she owed it all to him who couldn't be with her today.

But she's waiting for him—she always has beside the home she built for them. Her hand twitches, and she muses over the lightness, the emptiness of her hand, how there is no one next to her to hold it. Her heart folds into itself. She knows that later, today's volunteer will come by to tell her that she waits in vain, that the house on the cliff will always be empty. Still, she waits by the setting sun.

there is a home

on the edge of a lonely red cliff,
over empty deserts and valleys,
underneath the eternal sunset sky,

waiting.
