"Si mami." i say into the phone while wrapping up the breakfast sandwiches I made for Brit and I. We are hitting the road today to head to Lima for the week, and I for one couldn't be more excited. I haven't been home in a while, so I'm excited to see my family again and happy to take a trip with Brittany to just relax. We dropped off Chef and Lord Tubbs at Mercedes's apartment last night so we could just wake up and go this morning, or so I thought. My mom called me at 5am and we've been on the phone ever since. While my mom was excited I was coming home, she was nervous about the massive snowstorm due to stretch across the east coast through the Midwest, her biggest fear was that I would be stuck and stranded alone in the dark and freeze to death, she can be a little dramatic. Even though I assured her Brit and I would be fine, she still was panicking, which was evident by the Spanish she was rambling in my ear. Brittany walked up behind me and kissed me on the cheek while rubbing my sides before she grabbed a handful of grapes from the bowl on the counter and popped a few in her mouth. I turned my head and caught her lips quickly while winking at her.
"Si mami, Brittany got the oil changed in the car yesterday." I tell my mom for the 3rd time this morning. "Si mami, we will fill the car with gas too."
"Hola senora Lopez!" Brittany yelled out happily as she held up the bowl of berries I just rinsed off, and pointed to the blender. I nod at her and then point to myself to let her know I'll make the smoothies for us.
I roll my eyes and point to the phone. "Si mami." I say while smiling and handing Brittany the phone. A few days ago I was on the phone with my mom getting a recipe from her when she heard Brittany in the background and demanded to speak with her, that turned into a two long conversation between the two of them with Brittany laughing loudly every few moments and talking in Spanish; so it's safe to assume my mom loves her already. I ended up falling asleep on the noisy pair and cuddling with Chef on the couch, while Brit rubbed my legs.
Brittany instantly started speaking in Spanish to my mom on the phone, which made my heart swell in all types of awesomeness. I finished wrapping up the sandwiches quickly and got started on our smoothies. Brittany came back in the kitchen with a smile and slipped my phone in my back pocket while copping a feel on my butt in the process. I look up at her and kiss her on the neck quickly.
"What did my mom want to talk to you about?" I ask her slowly as she hugs me from behind and rests her chin on my shoulder as she begins to kiss my neck slowly.
"Just to warn me about the snow, and tell me not to let you drive when the snow starts." Brittany laughs.
I quickly frown and turn around in Brittany's arms. "Why not?" I ask her.
Brittany walks us backwards so my back is on the counter. "Apparently you're a bad driver." She then laughs out.
"Whatever." I reply, my mom has never been a fan of my driving; I'm either driving too fast or too slow for her. "Are you ever scared when I drive?" I ask Brittany as I link my hands behind her neck.
Brittany pretends to think for a moment. "Well..."
My jaw drops in horror. "You are so lying." I tell her quickly.
"I trust your driving, Sanny." She then smiles before kissing me softly on the lips. I deepen the kiss and pull Brit closer on me as she runs her arms up and down my back.
"Good." I wink at her when the kiss finally break. I stare in Brit's eyes and just smile at her.
"What?" She ask shyly. "Do I have toothpaste on my mouth again?" She asks while licking around her mouth with her tongue desperately trying to reach the nonexistent toothpaste blob.
I laugh at her but never break eye contact with her. "I just love you so much, Brit." I whisper to her before kissing her again.
"I love you too." She replies happily before kissing the tip of my nose. "Ready to hit the road?"
I nod as she stands up straight, off of me. "Yeah I just need to finish the smoothies, can you grab the luggage from the bedroom?"
"Sure." Brittany smiles. "I've never been to Ohio, I'm super excited."
"It's not that great, honeybee." I tell her with a smile. "Lima is a small town, nothing spectacular ever happens there."
"You were born there right?" Brittany asks me before leaving the kitchen.
I nod. "Yep."
"Well, something spectacular did happen." She shrugs before doing some weird ass dance with her shoulders while pointing at me and smiling.
I can't help but laugh as she moonwalks out of the kitchen.
We've been driving for a little over 3 hours, and it's been the greatest three hours of my life. Being around Brit is always fun, but she has so many different car road trips games that she plays, with her own rules of course, that she's like double the fun right now. We played "kiss buggy", which is Brit's version of "punch buggy", so the first to point out a VW bug gets a kiss on any part of their body they choose instead of a punch. I've successfully racked up 5 kisses and I can't wait to cash them in later. We played radio, in which as soon as a song came on the radio the first one to guess the song and the artist gets a kiss as well. Ok, so maybe all of our games ended in a kiss as the reward, but that's perfectly fine with me.
"Go to sleep Brit." I say softly when I glance over and see her leaning on the window now, fluttering her eyes desperately trying to stay awake.
Brittany bucks her eyes open and sits up. "No, I'm ok." She replies quickly.
"You're falling asleep." I laugh out. "Seriously, honeybee, go to sleep. I'm going to stop somewhere in Pennsylvania in another 2 hours or so, find a hotel, and then we can explore the city and have some fun."
"It's starting to snow." She says while looking around. "I want to stay up so you're alert while driving."
"So a sleepy person is giving me, a non sleepy person, tips on staying awake?" I ask her.
"Oh." Brittany laughs out. "Ok, but I'll just rest my eyes for a few minutes." She nods just as her favorite song of the moment comes on, she turns up the radio and she starts to sing instead.
I love when you pulling up in your jeep Bumping all your beats Js on
With your shades on Just to bring me something to eat
You the man up in these streets But when it comes to my heart
That don't mean a thing no oh
I glance at her and sing the next part.
Baby hop in my ride Ooh it's hot as hell outside
Got the top down With the doors closed My hand upon your thigh
Drive slow ooh Take your time
Brittany grabs my hand and takes over.
Every little thing you do got me feeling some type of way
When you gimme that thunder you make my summer rain
(Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh) Everyday, everyday
My smile brightens as Brittany keeps singing, she doesn't sing too often, but she does, I absolutely love it.
With every single part of me My love for you is constantly
Forever and ever on repeat, on repeat And it won't stop
Oh oh oh oh Ooh ooh ooh ooh
I jump in and interrupt her and take over, my eyes are still on the road but I just feel her staring at me and smiling, and I get a warm tingly feeling all over.
I love when we pulling up to the beach Sand down to my feet
Sun down Nobody around That's one hell of a scene
You rocking my body (rock, rock the boat Aaliyah),
Don't it sound familiar?
I hear Brittany giggle before she sings the last part of the song.
And you sound like ah ah aye aye Looking up in space
It's just me and my ba-ae And we feel so amazing
Oh oh All night Ooh ooh ooh
"I love that song." Brittany says excitedly while turning down the radio again.
"I can tell." I smiled. "I love hearing you sing."
"My voice is now where as good as yours, cupcake." Brittany says shyly.
"Says who?" I ask her quickly as I glance over at her.
Brittany shrugs and blushes. She softly hums the next song on the radio, Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" while looking out the window. "It's really starting to pick up out here, San." Brittany says softly as the car slides a little. "Do you want to stop in the next city?" She asks. "We can get lunch and just hang out in the hotel or maybe explore the surrounding area a little?"
I nod. "Yeah, it's slippery out here." I tell her. "Even with the snow tires."
"Ok." She replies. "Do you want me to drive, or are you ok?" She asks quietly while turning the radio off.
"I'm ok, baby." I reply softly while focusing on the road ahead of me. Brittany places her hand on my thigh and rubs softly while she hums a little.
"Do you want some gum?" She asks sweetly.
I smile. "Sure."
"Awesome." She gets excited for some reason and quickly reaches in the back seat and in her purse to pull out some gum. I hear her unwrap it before she holds it up to my mouth. I accept the gum and kiss her fingers.
"Thanks." I tell her as the car slides again. "Fuck." I say under my breath while gripping the steering wheel tighter.
After another hour of slipping and sliding we pull into a small town, that kind reminds me of Lima actually. Brittany sits up and a look around with a smile as we drive through what I'm guessing is their downtown area.
"There's a hotel." She points out. "It looks nice."
I squint in the snow to see down the street and nod in approval to myself. There are people walking down the street stopping in the various shops on the strip, kids playing in a park we pass, it looks safe and like a good town to rest for the night, or until the snow blows over.
"Ok, let's get a room." I tell her as I pull into the parking lot and park the car. "Your card is staying in your purse, Brit." I remind her while locking eyes with her.
"Even if I want to buy Cheetos?" She asks sweetly with a slight frown.
"I'll buy you all the Cheetos you want this week." I laugh out as I lean over and kiss her quickly.
"Deal." She smiles as she jumps out of the car.
I step out myself and quickly pull my hood over my head before Brit grabs my hand and we walk to the lobby. I book us a junior suite and call to let my mom know we stopped for the night while Brit grabs our suitcases out the trunk of the car.
We walk in the room and I nod in approval, there's a king size bed, a couch, a recliner, a huge TV, and a dresser, and a small kitchenette. There's a scenic view as well. Brittany immediately pulls the blinds to the side and steps out on the balcony.
"This is beautiful." She smiles as she looks over her shoulder at me.
I set my purse on the bed and walk outside with her. "Yeah it is." I agree while wrapping my arms around her waist and resting my head on her shoulder.
"Hey what's that?" Brittany asks while pointing at something in the distance.
I stand up straight, so she moves behind me resting her hands on my hips, and look in the distance. "Looks like people are sledding." I tell her.
"Can we, can we, can we, can we, can we, can we?!" Brittany squeals and pleads while jumping up and down.
I laugh at her. "Sure, maybe there's a brochure or something in the room.
"This is going to be the best trip ever." She says happily as she runs back in the room and starts rummaging through the desk for information.
I walk in behind her and close the door. I sit on the bed and reply to a text message from Quinn. Brittany had me leave my work phone with Quinn, so I wouldn't try to cook or bake something and FedEx it she claims, as ridiculous as that sounds, I probably would try.
"Hey honeybee." I say softly wile reaching for my ipad quickly.
"Yeah." Brittany asks as she sits on the bed next to me and holds up the brochure for Devils End Ski Resort. "It's a few miles up the road, they have skiing, snow tubing, snowboarding, sledding, everything." She says happily. "I know we didn't bring skis, but let me pay to rent the equipment, please?"
I smile at her. "Sure, baby. Use the joint account; I moved some money from the profits from my Snixx account there instead of my personal account this morning. I want to share my earnings with you more." I tell her.
"Thank you." She smiles before kissing me on the cheek. "So what's up?"
"Quinn got a phone call on the Snixx line, a lady that was at the Thompson's Christmas part upstate, has a winter house in Florida, and wants to know if I can come down there and cater a party for her. She's willing to pay for air far and hotel rooms." I say excitedly.
Brittany's eyes light up. "Really?"
I nod quickly. "She wants to book us for February 15." I tell her.
"So we would be spending Valentine's Day in Florida?" She asks quietly.
I instantly freeze. I didn't even think of the date, who knows is Mercedes and Quinn are able to go then. Well, I'm assuming Q is in since she giving me the message, but then again she has to give me the message whether she can go or not.
"It doesn't matter where we spend Valentine's Day, as long as we are together right?" I ask her.
Brittany smiles. "Exactly. Can we travel on like the 13th then? So we have the whole day?"
"Sure, let me make sure Q and Cedes can go, they can bring their guys, and they can hang out while we cook, I mean it's Florida, I'm sure they'll find something entertaining to do, right?" I suggest.
"If they can't, they have a serious problem." Brittany laughs.
"Ok, just this one text, honeybee, and I'm yours the rest of the day." I promise her.
"Cool. I'm going to call and see how long the ski place is open." Brittany says while fishing out her phone and dialing the number on the brochure, I decide to call Q instead of texting her. After I give her all the details, and she says Sam was going to come anyways, we lock everything in place. She said she'll confirm with Mercedes and email me all the necessary information so I can put together an estimate cost, and Q can have the women wire the down payment via Western Union to us.
Once I'm off of the phone, I notice Brit is in the bathroom, so I slip my shoes off and lie down, a few moments later I feel the bed dip and my favorite warm body snuggle next to me. Brittany rests her arm over my waist and nestles her face in my neck.
"They are open until 10pm tonight." She says softly as she starts to plant kisses on my neck.
"Cool, how about we take a little nap, and then we walk up the street and have lunch and one of the restaurants we passed earlier?" I suggest to her before I turn my head and catch her lips.
"Mmmmmm, sounds good to me." Brittany smiles out when the kiss breaks.
Brit and I slept a little longer than anticipated, the bed was so unbelievably comfortable to be a hotel bed, and we did wake up super early, so we were pretty exhausted. I woke up first and decided to hop in the shower, and change into some warmer clothes, since I just had on leggings and sweatshirt for the drive. As I'm letting the hot water cascade over me Brit slips in and pouts.
"So you take showers without me now?" She asks while running her hands up and down my body.
"I didn't want to wake my sleeping beauty." I wink at her.
Brittany laughs and kisses me. "So lunch, then maybe some shopping at the little shops, then the ski slopes?" She lists off.
I nod at her. "Then cuddles and room service to warm up for dinner." I tell her.
"Can't wait." She smiles before kissing me once more.
30 minutes later, we are dressed and walking up the street to a diner called Momma's for lunch. Once we walk in I'm instantly reminded of the diner we go to back in New York, once we are seated in a booth, we start to look over the menu.
"Look at all the stuff they have Sanny." Brittany says with a smile as her eyes scan the menu.
"I think I'm going to get the steak burger and fries." I tell her.
"Hmmmmmm." Brittany turns the pages of the menu and I see her eyes light up on something. "I'm going to get the smothered chicken sandwich and fries, oh and a milkshake!"
"Sounds good." I nod at her. The waitress comes and starts listing off the specials, and I know for sure she was flirting with Brittany. I slightly feel my skin start to boil but Brittany reaches over and grabs my hand while she orders for the both of us. The waitress quickly gets the hint and turns a bright shade of red, while I smirk at her.
"I'm really excited you're going to meet my family." I say when the waitress leaves as I take a sip of my water.
"I am too, I kind of met your mom already, well talked to her on the phone, but fill me in on everyone else." She says with a smile as she grabs my other hand and rubs her thumbs over my knuckles.
"Ok, well there's my dad, he's a super genuine guy, loves family and big family events, so expect tons of parties, even during the week." I laugh. "Then there's my Uncle Marco and his wife Silvia, he's my mom's brother." I explain. "He's like the con artist of the family, he's always hitting up family members for his next big invention." I say with air quotes. "If he asks you for even a dollar, just say no." I laugh out. "He won't be offended, he's used to it."
Brittany smiles. "Ok."
"There's my cousin Emilio, we are a year part, he's my favorite cousin." I say with a big smile. "He went to UCLA for finance, and after he graduated he moved back to Lima, for who knows what reason." I scowl. "I'm trying to convince him to move to New York, but he wont. We'll probably hang out with him and his friends the most. My Aunt Sophia is a latina dance teacher, so expect her to put your skills to work, and my younger cousin, her daughter, Maria is a sweetheart, she's the perfect cuddle buddy, she's 5 now, and full of energy."
"Sounds good." Brittany smiles as the waitress comes back and sets our meals down. "Sounds like a fun family."
"Quinn used to be really into Emilio." I laugh out as I cut my burger in half and hand it to Brit, she does the same to her sandwich and hands it to me.
"What happened?" Brittany asks while squirting practically half the bottle of ketchup on her fries.
"Emilio, or Lio, as we call him, is a year older than us, and went off to college, Quinn dated some dufus named Finn our senior year of high school, and then we moved out to New York right after graduation." I shrug while I smear mayo on my burger.
"Did Lio like her?" Brittany asks me.
I nod and smile. "Yeah, he did. Which is why I tried to convince him to move to New York, for a second chance, but she's with Trouts now."
"How are things going with them?" Brittany asks.
"I don't know, one minute Q is head over heels in love, but the next minute she remembers that he doesn't want to get married, and she all broken up again." I shrug. "I kind of want her to leave him, to be honest."
Brittany raises an eyebrow at me and stuffs fries in her mouth. I lean over and wipe the ketchup from her chin and wink at her.
"I see no point to staying in a relationship where you know the other person doesn't want something you really do. Quinn really wants to get married and have kids, if Sam doesn't, she's always going to be on this freakin emotional rollercoaster, and it's not fair to her."
"Very true." Brittany agrees as she takes a sip of her shakes. "Whoa…..awesome." She says as she eye twinkle. I make a mental note to come up with a milkshake recipe for her, so I can see that twinkle in her eye again.
I laugh. "Yeah the food is really good." I say before I take another bite of my burger and look outside. "It's really coming down." I say softly.
Brittany sighs. "Yeah, do you know how to ski or snowboard?" She asks me.
I shake my head. "No."
"We probably shouldn't go in this weather then." She states. "Are there ski resorts of any kind in Lima, or close by?"
I nod. "Yeah, Lio skis a lot, maybe we can go with him, or have him tell us where one is."
"That's sounds like a better idea. We can just go to some of the shops and hang around the room tonight, I mean we do have to finish driving tomorrow." Brittany states. "Neither one of us should get hurt."
"You are such a genius, babe." I tell her with a smile.
"So who else will I meet this week?" Brittany asks.
"The most important person in my family, my abuela." I say with a smile. "I love her so much, she first taught me to cook, she's my mom's mom, I haven't seen her in a while, I can't wait to just hug her." I say shyly.
"Cute." Brittany gushes. "You are so adorable when you talk about your family."
"I'm pretty big on family." I tell her as I take the last bite of my burger. "This was really good." I add with taking another sip of my milkshake.
The waitress walks by and slams our bill on the table. "You pay up front." She says rudely before walking away.
"What the fuck is her problem?" I hiss out.
"Let it go, Santana." Brittany says while grabbing my hand.
"Fine." I say while digging in my purse for my wallet. "Ready?"
Brittany stuffs a few more fries in her mouth and takes a long sip of her milkshake and nods. "Ready." She smiles while jumping up from the booth.
After I pay, we walk hand in hand down the street and stop in a few of the shops and boutiques they have. We first stop in an art shop and take a lot of a few of the pieces they have for sale.
"Do you know what type of art work you want for the penthouse?" Brittany asks me as we stop at a picture.
I shake my head. "I'm not really good with art." I tell her. "I was going to follow your lead on that one."
Brittany glances down at me. "Are you sure?"
"Yeah, whatever pictures or paintings you pick is fine with me." I tell her.
"Ok." Brittany smiles as we walk to a different picture. We stay in the art store for probably an hour before we head to a clothing store, which is more my speed.
"Look how beautiful these scarves are Brit." I say over my shoulder. "I bet my mom would love some."
Brittany walks up beside me. "I think she would too, she's a librarian right?" I nod. "Well she can wear these to work then." She smiles.
"True." I breathe out while I pick up three of the scarves. "You like these 3?" I ask her.
Brittany looks over the colors in my hand and nods. "Excelente." She says before kissing me on the forehead.
I pick up a scarf that I saw Brittany staring at and add it to the pile in my hand and wander over to find Brittany, who was on the other side of the store, with a handful of stuff herself.
"Whatcha got there?" I ask her.
She jumps and puts her hands behind her back. "Nothing."
"Hmmmm." I reply with raising my eyebrow at her. "Well, I'm going to check out, you can pay for your nothing when I leave the store." I laugh out to her. I lean up and kiss her softly on the lips before walking away slowly.
I check out and stand outside to wait for Brittany, when I notice the snow is really, really coming down now. I'm a little worried we won't make it out of the city tomorrow until afternoon when the plows have had a chance to come through.
Brittany comes out a few moments later with a bag in her hand. She quickly grabs my hand as we start walking back to the hotel. "It's getting pretty bad out." Brittany replies while letting my hand go and wrapping her arm around my waist and pulling me closer to her.
"Yeah, we should head back to the hotel." I tell her.
Brit and I ordered salads from room service for dinner, and a bowl of fresh strawberries to snack on with a bottle of champagne. We ate dinner while watching some black and white movie that Brit was really into, I just kind of daydreamed and pretended to enjoy. After the movie was over, we sat cuddled on the couch with my ipod playing in the background.
"I wrote a new poem." Brittany smiles.
"Really?" I say happily. "Can I hear it?"
Brittany nods. She then jumps up and grabs her ipad and sits back on the couch facing me. "I got the inspiration for it after you got robbed." She says quietly before leaning forward and kissing my bandage on my cheek. I bumped it earlier and it started to bleed a little, so Brit put the bandage pack on it.
"I call it Our Deepest Fear." She says. She pauses briefly and starts to read the poem.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.
We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small
Does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine,
As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us;
It's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we're liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.
"Whoa…" I say softly. "That may be my favorite poem of yours so far." I tell her.
"You really like it?" Brittany asks as she sets the ipad on the floor and opens her arms for me to crawl into.
"I really do, honeybee, you are so talented." I tell her as I lean on her chest. "Are you going to post that one to your blog?"
"Hmmmm, I don't know." I feel her shrug. "Should I?"
"That depends on if you want to share it or not, baby." I tell her.
"I think I just want to keep it to us for now." She says while hugging me tightly.
"That works for me. "I smile as I lift my head and kiss her while straddling her. "What time do you want to leave tomorrow?" I ask her in between kisses.
"Noon-ish?" She suggests as she slips her hands under my shirt and rubs my back. "Roads should be clear by then." She adds before leaning up and kissing me. "We can go back to the diner for breakfast, I want to try that giant waffle thing on the front cover."
"That did look good, didn't it?" I nod in agreement.
"What do you want to do the rest of the night?" I ask Brittany while running my thumb over her lips.
"Well, this is perfect weather for….well, you know." She shrugs shyly while blushing.
"Hmmmm. I think I know exactly what you are referring to." I tell her as I lean down flush on her and deepen the kiss.
30 minutes later, Brittany and I are dressed super warmly and making snow angels in the field behind the hotel while taking pictures of each other and making goofy videos sending them to Quinn and Mercedes, who sent us videos back laughing at us.
We spent the rest of the night having a huge snowball fight that resulted in tiring ourselves out and coming back in the room around midnight. We took a long hot bath together, Brittany cleaned around my stitches for me and we fell asleep while Beyoncé belted "Dangerously In Love" through the iPod, and I can't help but feel the same way.
