Chapter Twenty- Seven

"Well, hello love what brings you by my humble abode?" Klaus asked as Layla walked into the compound. She still wasn't sure what had happened while she was away, but something told her it was not good.

"You lost the right to call me that last night." she tossed at him still angry that he could just toss what they had away.

"Now, Layla you gave me your word." Elijah chided softly as he looked from her to Klaus.

"I only told you that I would try." she said as her eyes scanned the area around her.

"Try harder." Elijah said as he gave her a pleading look

"Well, since you asked so nicely." She said as she met Klaus's eyes with her own" I'm sorry I was a bit snappish I drank way too much last night and I'm starving." she felt that familiar chaotic mess that always seemed to be home her, but now it only served as a salt in her still opened wounds.

"Well, by all means let it not be said I let you starve to death." Klaus stated as he cleared his throat.

"I'll see to it that some brunch is prepared." Elijah paused in his movment and looked from Klaus who still stood at the balcony to Layla who was just at the foot of the stairs." I trust I can leave the two of you for a moment and come back with you both alive." he didn't wait for an answer before he walked out of sight.

"I take it you're still angry with me." It wasn't a question because he already knew the answer.

"I'm not here to talk about us." she stated as she walked away from the stairs and was rewarded with Klaus suddenly in front of her.

"Then why are you here?" He asked looking into her eyes, but not touching her.

"Elijah told me a bit of my family history and in return I promised him that I would practice my magic more." she said as she fought against the sudden urge to touch his beautiful face and breath in his intoxicating scent." The only way I can safely do that is while living here." he touched her face she let him.

"You know the witches are allowed to practice openly now." he said to her as she smiled at him.

"I heard, but I wasn't sure." she said as heart thudded heavily against her chest." Tell me what happened while I was away." he sighed and she knew she wasn't going to like what he had to say.

"Well, your niece Monique is back from the dead." he saw the instant shock on her face.

"Davina?" her breath caught in her throat as she felt the dread wash over her.

"She's back as well." he said as he saw relief wash over her.

"I felt her magic getting out of control." she said as relaxed into his touch.

"Yes, it was pretty bad." He said then he sighed heavily

"What is it?" she felt his unease and was suddenly fearful of what he would say next.

"There's something you should know." he started, but didn't know how to tell her without causing her more pain than he did last night.

"Then go ahead and tell me." she felt the sorrow wash through her and knew in a moment it was bad." You said Davina was back from the dead." her mind started going over all the possibilities of how she came back." Is it Davina? Is something wrong with her?" she drew her brows together in a near panic at what could be so bad.

"No, she's fine." he was quick to reassure her as he lead over to a near by table." She is not as powerful as she use to be, but this has nothing to do with her." he took both her hands in his as they sat facing each other with their knees touching." It's about your sister." his words failed him at this moment.

"Sophie," the name was said in a breathy whisper as he saw her trying to hold it all together." What happened to her?" fear hit her hard.

"I'm sorry love, but she is no longer with us." she was quite for a long moment and Klaus thought she had gone into shock, but she suddenly got to her feet with such force her chair toppled over.

"Tell me it was not you." her voice was strained as she looked down at him.

"I gave you my word." he said to her as he got to his feet.

"Do you know who?" she asked fighting back the tears that threaten to spill forth.

"I have my suspicions, but no proof." he answered her.

"Was it vampire related?" she asked softly

"No, I would know if it had been." he said to her.

"This is all my fault." she said as she turned her back on him and held her chest." I left because I thought you hated me for what had happened to our little baby." tears filled her eyes" I never even told Sophie. I never said good bye or anything." tears fell down her cheeks." She needed me to protect her and I wasn't here." she felt Klaus turning her as she buried her face into his chest.

"You had no way of knowing what was to be her fate." Klaus said as he held his own sorrow in check. It hurt him to see how much pain she was in.

"I should have been here for her and maybe she would still be here with us." she sobbed as he held her allowing her to lean fully into him.

Elijah came in with a tray of food only to see Layla in tears and Klaus holding her. His eyes met Klaus's and he quitely placed the food on a nearby table then left the two alone. Klaus held Layla in his arms until her sobbing turned into quite hiccups. She didn't offer no protest when he lifted her up in his arms and took her upstairs to his room.

"Nik?" her voice was raw from crying, but when she felt Klaus move from the bed she had to call out to him.

"What is it love?" he asked soothingly as he gently rubbed her cheek

"Stay with me." she knew she should be resisting him, but all the loose was starting to catch up with her and right now she just wanted to be held by her husband later she would be angry. Later she would put her wall back up. Right now she didn't want to.

"Of course." he said as he moved in behind her and wrapped her in his arms.
