Summary: "Sirius couldn't help but care for James in ways that he shouldn't, but James only ever had eyes for Lily." Sirius-centred angst fest drabble thing, set in GOF. COMPLETE.
Warnings: ummm… Angst fest? Is that even a warning? Probably not even worth the rating of K+. But just in case...
Author's Notes: Inspiration struck at 4 in the morning and I wrote down one sentence and went to sleep and now I shall write it properly. The title is from the song Forsaken by Skillet (from the amazing album Collide). Please read and review if you like or have helpful advice- the author could use all the help she can get!
Sirius couldn't help but care for James in ways that he shouldn't, but James only ever had eyes for Lily. James never noticed Sirius when Lily was around. And how could he forget, when he looked into his beloved godson's eyes and saw Lily and James and everything he never had but had wanted so desperately?
Maybe it was wrong, but in his eyes, Harry had become the new James and the new Lily. It hurt to look at his beloved godson, who was so clearly his own person and see James, his beloved James who'd never been his and never would be. It hurt to look at Harry and see Lily, Lily who'd taken everything he'd ever wanted. To see the two people he'd failed to save, to see the way Harry flinched away from affection like Sirius himself had done for years because of the abuse from his parents.
Harry was not James, but he was the closest Sirius could get.
All that was left of James was a memory, and it was not enough. Never enough.
