Tons of thanks to my beta, 10000Fists, who has been a great help in shaping the story to where it is now, though unfortunately they will not be able to continue doing so.

Many thanks also to LillianMarie2 who has allowed me to borrow certain elements from her story: A Sirens Song. Please note that our stories are by no means related in terms of plot and are not affiliated in any way. That matter being cleared, A Sirens Song is truly an excellent read – and worth your time to look at.

"Blimey, what happened to you?" Due to her tears Hermione was able to hear rather than see the confused expression on Ron's face.

"Ron!" The other boy in the compartment had messy black hair and glasses and OH MERLIN it was Harry! Her sobs intensified, increasing the awkwardness of the situation.

"I didn't do anything!" was the redhead's response.

"No you said it! Are you alright... can I help in some way?"

That was such a typically Harry thing to say that it somehow managed to make smile. She resisted the urge to laugh with some difficultly, but at least she wasn't hysterical. Not yet, at any rate.

"It wasn't supposed to happen..." her voice trailed off faintly as her eyes began to focus. "I really didn't mean to..."

"Didn't mean to what?"

And Ron was behaving exactly like he had behaved at the start of the first year, that is to say he was more of an immature prat than Percy. She couldn't really blame him though. Both Harry and Hermione were considerate for their age, which again Ron could not be blamed for.

Harry was like that because of his treatment at the Dursley's, and Hermione freely admitted that the only reason she was more considerate than Ron was because she was technically 18 and had learnt the hard way about social interaction. Seriously, she had mentioned his supposed defeat of the Dark Lord, the reason his parents were dead, and told him about the books he was in because of that. How much worse could you get?

Although she made a mental note to herself that that kind of tactic would probably work on Draco Malfoy – both for and against him. No! Focus on getting out of this rather messy scenario and get the plan back on track! While you are at it mind, start thinking of ways to make up with Neville other than apologising about his family who were abusive, even if they were also misguided.

Okay, back to the here and now, how should she explain this to Harry and Ron. Looking at Harry's evident concern and even Ron looked worried; she decided to tell the truth. She might have wanted a perfect reunion, even if they didn't know it, but the thought of her first conversation with them being a fabrication was just too much.

"Can I sit down please?" Hermione asked, albeit hesitantly. The thought of being refused was slightly scary. It never happened though. The two boys moved some stuff, mostly chocolate and sweets off of the opposite seat leaving a space for her, which although slightly squished made her feel the most at home since she had left her parents house having wiped their memories. Yes, she could do this. She was on her way to Hogwarts, reunited with her best friends and she could do this. Except for Neville... a small part of her whispered, both saddening her and bringing her out of the temporary reverie and back to the situation at and.

"I met this boy, his name was Neville and..." she started to sniffle at the memory.

Mind Arts Check: 37/33: PASSED: +10XP

Then the game finally intervened, a significant amount of minutes too late, but better late than never. She really needed to raise that skill next level. Looking at Harry expectant face, and Ron's, if not expectant then certainly attentive one, she continued her narration.

"Neville and I were talking and, well he mentioned his relatives and they pushed him off Blackpool Pier to try and get him to use magic... they could have killed him... he said it himself... he almost drowned. It's abuse, that's what..."

Ron spoke up then... "Wait... do you mean Neville Longbottom?" Upon seeing a nod he continued..."Man... They said his relatives were crazy but I didn't think they were that bad! That's really, um, poor Neville! Don't you think so Harry?"

Harry then spoke up, but the mention of abuse seemed to have made him sad, which was hardly surprising for Hermione, knowing the environment that he grew up in!

"Yeah... that's bad, I mean the worst my Aunt and Uncle ever did was lock me in the cupboard under the stairs. But that was only if I did magic by accident and stuff..."

Ron's mouth was gaping...

"But... But... you're Harry Potter! Merlin! Why would they send you to live there?! I mean with Muggles?"

What was Ron saying! That was... the kind of stuff that she would expect to come out of the mouth of Draco Malfoy, not her friend of 7 years!

"I'm Muggleborn! My parents are Muggles!" The protest came to her lips unbidden. Ron just waved a hand.

"Well it's alright for you, isn't it? But for Harry Potter..."

Harry then cut in, sounding annoyed.

"My mother was a Muggleborn as well you know. Her parents were also Muggles, so what's so wrong with that?"

Ron by now was looking flustered at both of their comments.

"It's because the Muggles could do whatever they wanted to Harry!"

What, in Merlin's name was he talking about! Not all Muggles were evil; Ron wasn't a prejudiced git who believed stuff like that! She had thought so anyway...

"And what was to stop my parents from abusing me? Not all people who cannot use a wand are bad, you know!"

Ron's face was confused... it was almost as if he didn't know why they were angry at him...

"Wouldn't the Muggle Auror's help any Muggleborn children?"

Harry's face was red, had she ever seen him angry in their first year? Because he was angry now as he spat from gritted teeth.

"So why am I so special then? Because my father was the 'right sort'..."

Had Harry met Draco Malfoy before Hogwarts started or something... because even if she knew what he was referring to, having met pureblood supremacists at Hogwarts, how would Harry? Ron replied, intimidated.

"I'm not like that! Why are you acting like I said Muggles were bad or something?"

Harry and Hermione's faces mirrored each other as they said in perfect unison, though with different levels of rage.

"Well didn't you?"

Now it was Ron's turn to look outraged.

"Of course I didn't!" Something approaching comprehension dawned on his face. "Oh you wouldn't know but my father, he works with the ministry rants about it all the time, you know... The reason you shouldn't live with Muggles..." here he looked at Harry specifically, "is because of this non-inferency agreement thing between the Muggle ministry and our one."

Hermione, out of habit more than anything else, corrected Ron. "You mean non-interference agreement don't you?"

Ron nodded emphatically.

"Yeah, what you said, but the thing is it means that if your parents are Wizarding Citizens, which you are if you pass Hogwarts..." Hermione nodded, she remembered reading that. "Then you're considered part of our world which means that Muggles can't be punished for anything they do to a magical child under their guardianship, as long as they are Muggles. It's like this big loophole thingy in the law. Dad says it's kept up by old-fashioned people who don't want Muggles to be granted custody..."

Out of that speech only two facts registered themselves in Hermione's brain immediately. One of them was good, one of them was bad. First off Ron was not a Malfoy with red hair, which was obviously good. The second, horrible bit was that the Dursley's could suffer no punishment for what they did to Harry!

Harry just gave a sigh that was not so much upset as much as it was accepting, before he shrugged and attempted a smile.

"Well it's not like I was expecting anything to change, and anyway Hogwarts lets you board all year except for the summer, isn't that right?"

The only thing that kept Hermione from descending into tears a second time was the fact that she had already known about Harry's situation, and his attitude towards it. Suddenly her previous mental rants about the rate she was learning spells seemed petty and insignificant. So she did the one thing that she felt she could do that would not completely freak her friend out.

"Harry your glasses are broken. Can I mend them?"

Harry obliged, but was slightly confused.

"I thought we couldn't use magic outside of Hogwarts?"

Hermione restrained herself from going into 'lecture mode'.

"They apply the charm that alerts them when magic is used around our wands at Hogwarts. Until then it is undetectable." Noticing Ron's disappointed look, she continued.

"Of course Ron will be able to use magic all the time since he lives in a Wizarding household, right?" She already knew the answer, but she had to maintain the appearance of a stranger to the boys, no matter how much she hated it. Ron nodded.

"The trace, as it is known, only detects magic around the wand, so a family with an adult Wizard among its members is immune, as the Ministry cannot tell who has cast the spell." Ron looked gobsmacked, and Harry had the same resigned look.

"So I can cast magic whenever I want!"

"Yes and please have some consideration, since you know that Harry and I cannot!"

Ron looked embarrassed once again, scratching the back of his head somewhat nervously.

"Err, sorry, I tend to speak before I think sometimes. I didn't think about you guys being any different to me and..." He trailed off. Yes, he was definitely the same old Ron.

Harry was next to talk.

"It's alright...!" He suddenly turned towards Hermione. "I'm sorry, but I don't think I got your name."

She laughed, even if Harry was more perceptive than Ron, they were still pretty oblivious to social stuff at this age, not saying that Ron would ever improve that that much!

"That would be because I never said it! So let's start from the beginning. I'm Hermione Granger..."

"Harry Potter"

"Ron Weasley"

"I've heard about the Weasley's. My father told me all the Weasley's have red hair, freckles, and more children than they can afford."

Okay... when in Merlin's name did Draco – I am going to ruin your touching reunion – Malfoy get into the compartment.

"And I've heard about the Malfoy's. They all have blond hair, no manners and are more susceptible to the imperious curse than most other Wizarding families."

Oh, if only she could call him ferret! Draco seemed to have recovered somewhat though...

"We're susceptible to... the... imperious curse, who dared say that we are weak willed!"

This was just too good a chance to be missed... She'd say that she had read it somewhere...

"So the imperious curse would not affect a family as old and as powerful as the Malfoy's?"

He smirked back.

"Naturally"

"Then I had better inform the Ministry of Magic to arrest your father seeing as he was spared Azkaban due to the fact that he was under the imperious curse when he was a Death Eater. Your grandfather too, if the books were correct... I don't suppose you would testify?"

She wished that she had had a Wizarding camera to take a picture of Malfoy's face as it went pure white, then brilliant red. Somewhere in-between must have been a rather vivid pink...

"... ... ..."

Your Relationship with Ronald Weasley has Increased

Ron was grinning broadly and Hermione... was maintaining an innocent expression. She probably shouldn't have, no definitely shouldn't have said that, but it felt good. It was irrational; he was a child, albeit an annoying one and not the same young man who had become a Death Eater and had watched as her friends bodies were displayed. But it felt good. It felt like she was somehow evening a score that had not even been made yet – which was wrong of her.

She had to give the other children a chance. Most of Slytherin House became Death Eaters and not all of them would have done it willingly, she hoped. She had to hope in order to retain her faith in humanity.

Your Relationship with Draco Malfoy has decreased

That did make her feel regret. She had brought up the past and judged on family, admittedly he had done the same, but she had driven away someone who, however unlikely might not have been an enemy: she didn't delude herself that they could be friends. The thing that upset her most was the facts that Neville had had a similar screen appear when their relationship deteriorated, and that she had no real idea how to mend it.

Great, thank you conscience, now she felt bad about upsetting Malfoy. And now it was telling her to apologise to the shell-shocked boy. Great, the world had ended, in both ways. It had ended literally when she had died, and now it was ending figuratively.

"I am sorry, I should have not responded like that. It was perhaps... unnecessarily harsh"

The Malfoy nose began to tilt upwards; he was probably used to people apologising to him.

"But I also believe that you should say sorry to Ron as well. Family is precious, to everyone."

A sneer then appeared, completing the standard trio of Malfoy family expressions: consisting of the sneer, the smirk and the surprised.

"So you think that if someone like you apologises then I have to follow... you are wrong. I do not apologise to inferiors."

"Wait a minute-"Ron made as if to stand up... his ears matched Malfoy's face, although she knew that he would not appreciate such a comparison.

"Ron, its fine and Malfoy... I apologised because it is wrong to hurt people using their family, and I did just that. I did not say sorry out of a desire to exchange false words of regret."

He twitched slightly, probably in irritation.

"Who are you anyway? You're no Pureblood that I know of... That makes you a half-blood at best."

"I'm Muggleborn actually."

Your Relationship with Draco Malfoy has decreased

It wasn't a twitch this time, but instead more of a full blown recoil. He looked... like he had picked up one of Fred and Georges fake wands for an emergency, only to have it transform into a rubber snake. Well, maybe not something that specific, but the look of confusion mixed with anger mixed with disgust was the same as Molly Weasley's when she had fallen prey to the trick before the Quidditch World Cup. Seeing how Malfoy was not going to speak, Hermione continued.

"My name is Hermione Granger; this is Ron Weasley, and Harry Potter."

That did get him to speak.

"So the boy I met in Madam Malkins is Harry Potter. Why didn't you mention your name?"

Okay, so he was ignoring Ron and Hermione in favour of Harry. That was expected.

"You never asked my name."

That did explain a lot. If Harry and Malfoy had met before, then Harry could very well have been exposed to Malfoy's views on the 'right sort', which would explain his comments to Ron. The compartment door slammed, and she could see Malfoy storming off down the corridor, Crabbe and Goyle in tow. Ron was grinning and Harry looked irritated, and she looked ...incredibly bewildered, probably due to the newly appeared screen.

Now Hermione was curious and after making her excuses, she went to change into her robes, but also to check the relationships screen which was something that she had not done in a while.

She had to admit, it was depressing to see that Neville disliked her, although since she had expected it she did not start to cry. Her parents and Professor McGonagall had increased slightly, though not to their former levels. Still at least overall she had made progress. Malfoy disliked her more than Neville did, and the most of anyone she had met, as expected, particularly considering their first interaction. It was pleasant to know that she had made a good start with Harry and Ron... she just had to mend her relationship with Neville... That was easier said than done though.

After getting dressed into her undecorated Hogwarts robes (the house crest would be added after the sorting) Hermione knocked before re-entering the compartment. The boys had gotten changed and Crookshanks was hissing at Scabbers... or rather the animagus known as Peter Pettigrew. That was bad, as Pettigrew would be needed alive in order to prove Sirius's innocence. A light tap on the nose and a promise of tuna had the kitten settling down in her lap though, although she couldn't stop him glaring at the rat.

As the three of them talked, the Express continued to make its way through the countryside. Ron really needed to talk about something other than Quidditch and his family, and Harry was hesitant to speak of his family, for evident reasons, and since he had not yet been introduced to flying yet was clueless about the Sport. This would have made for a highly awkward atmosphere in the Carriage, as no-one really had anything in common with both of the others, so a conversation on a topic would exclude someone.

Luckily that was not the case, and though it took a fair amount of effort Hermione was able to keep on changing the subject and linking topics so as to include everyone. This feat was only doable due to a much higher charisma, and her large amount of knowledge about the boys. She did not delude herself that she would have been able to help the situation had she not had previous experience with their characters. There was a lot more work to be done on her social skills that should probably be done before she attempted to help Neville.

LEVEL UP! You are now Level 4!

This time Hermione was unfortunate with the cards, drawing a 1, the lowest score possible out of the maximum of 5. She still thought that raising her Intelligence was the best option though, since it granted her a guaranteed increase in skill points. This level she had a total of 20 points, 5 automatically, 10 from her intelligence, 4 from the Overachiever perk and 1 from the card.

This time all 20 points went into Research. The skill was vital for learning spells, even if her aptitude for them was defined by other ones. And since Hermione knew roughly what would happen she could prepare the spells in advance rather than have to be able to perform them on the spot. Of course when she got older and things changed she would have to raise the other skills like Evocation, but for the time being her focus should be on preparation for the challenges that she knew they would have to face.

Perk Points to Spend: 2

There were a lot more choices, and unlike last time, she currently had only 2 Perk Points to use. As tempted as she as to choose the one that would get her out of any trouble, it was probably best to save that one for before she did something risky, as it was only the next detention, not one of her choice. Past Life Knowledge was an unknown, and not something she wanted to chance a mere hour away from Hogwarts. So the choice should be made from the 1 Perk Point options. Healing Hands seemed a sensible option, and although Violence is Always the Answer had a bad name, she could very well end up needing it, after all duels had been known to turn physical, and it might give her an edge.

Having made her choice the screen faded, and so the view of Hogwarts on the other side of the lake took her completely by surprise. Her awe at the castle's majesty showed, though it was due to a different reason than in her previous life. Hogwarts was not ruined, not destroyed and littered with the bodies of her friends. It was a place of learning and magic, and if she had her way, Voldemort and his minions would never, ever have the chance to destroy it again!

The train drew to a halt and once again Hagrid greeted the first years cheerfully, though he reserved an especially broad smile for Harry. The steep narrow path down to the lake, that Hermione had found so challenging the first time... was still challenging.

Athletics Check 28/45! FAILED

Out of breath, and mentally cursing both her low Strength, and her equally low Athletics, Hermione was unsurprised when Neville gave the boat that she was sharing with Harry and Ron a wide berth. He looked unhappy, and Hermione wished to try and comfort him. But that would only make a bad situation worse, and Neville looked like he needed some time away from her. It was... sad. Neville had been the fourth person on the boat, but now the fourth person was someone she knew all too well. Blonde curls cascaded prettily down the girls shoulder, and large blue eyes only added to her angelic appearance. Lavender Brown smiled confidently as she took the seat next to Hermione.

"Hi, I'm Lavender, what's your name?"

It was surprising to hear such friendliness in the girl's voice, Hermione could count on the fingers of one hand the number of times she had had a friendly conversation with Lavender. But in her previous life she had dismissed the girl as popular and shallow, like the children that had ostracised Hermione at her Muggle Primary school. So she had never tried to befriend her, and by the time she had been mature enough to put such differences aside there had been a rivalry over Ron which prevented them from even considering friendship.

Lavender had died in the Battle of Hogwarts, wounding Fenrir Greyback in the process. She might not have been studious... but she had fought for her beliefs, and died for them. There was also the fact that she had long since come to see Ron as a brother, not a romantic interest. Whichever reason was the most profound, the fact was that Hermione Granger did not dislike Lavender Brown, and even wished to get to know her better. As such she responded in kind.

"I'm Hermione Granger. Hogwarts really is amazing isn't it?"

There was an enthusiastic nod from the other girl.

"Definitely... it's so romantic... just like a fairytale castle... I hope we get to sleep in one of the towers!"

"There have been quite a few significant romances in Hogwarts you know... Like the time they tried to put on a play of 'The Fountain of Fair Fortune'.

Lavender was interested?! She certainly seemed to be.

"Really... what happened?"

"According to Hogwarts A History, a duel broke out between two of the cast because they were both in love with the same wizard!"

"What happened to them then?"

"Somehow the stage caught fire, and no-one wanted to try another play at Hogwarts again."

"Oh... that's a pity... I would love to play Amata! I always thought that that tale was amazing... better than the one about the Warlock's Hairy Heart any day! Hey, they should start up a drama club again! Then we could all act in it and..."

Your Relationship with Lavender Brown has Increased

Lavender continued to chatter cheerfully with Hermione, while Harry and Ron had their own conversation going. Lavender had been excited to meet the famous boy-who-lived, but surprisingly enough calmed down relatively quickly and began to chatter again, though she did glance shyly at Harry more than a few times. The boat ride passed quickly, and they were at the castle in what seemed like minutes. The underground harbour was the same as ever, and thankfully Neville still had his toad, though Trevor was squirming frequently. Hagrid raised his fist, and once again a loud knock sounded on the door to Hogwarts.

Professor McGonagall's face was as stern as ever and everything was so normal, it was amazing. The wonder of Hogwarts was still strong as the Professor led them into a side chamber to the Great Hall, to wait for their sorting. She did keep a watchful eye on Hermione throughout, though. Evidently she was not quite sure what to think.

Meanwhile Harry was nervously flattening his hair and Ron was rubbing dirt of his nose, or was trying to at any rate. Neville looked like he was going to faint and the ghosts had arrived. In short it was complete chaos, which was understandable considering that even Wizarding families did not usually know ghosts, except the ones at Hogwarts. Therefore even the pure-blooded children would not have seen so many ghosts together at once.

"Do you really think that everything will be okay?"

The frantic whisper came from Lavender who was shaking slightly. The ghosts had unnerved her, as had Ron's assertion that there was a test to pass, that could hurt. And yet, Hermione could not comfort the girl with the truth, as she shouldn't know. Instead she settled for a white lie.

"No, I asked how we were sorted when Professor McGonagall came to my house, and she said that you can't fail it, but it is a secret. But they wouldn't do anything dangerous, we are only first years and they won't know how much magic we've been taught."

That seemed to calm her down, although she was still slightly tense. She did however manage to shake off the fear of the ghosts and stand up straight eventually, demonstrating to Hermione exactly why Lavender was in Gryffindor during her previous life. Then it happened. Professor McGonagall returned and told them to form a line in alphabetical order. This resulted in a large amount of whispering about who was who, but no-one dared to talk any more than necessary under the Transfiguration teacher's watchful eye.

The sorting hat sung the very same song that it had done previously on Hermione's first sorting. Then Hannah Abbott was called up and Hermione panicked. She would have to try the hat on! The hat that could read minds! She had been worrying about legilimens without giving a thought to the sorting hat, which proclaimed that "there's nothing hidden in your head the sorting hat can't see"! How was she going to... what could she... were her skills in the Mind Arts going to be enough?! Then Seamus Finnegan had been sorted into Gryffindor, and her name was called.

"Granger, Hermione!"

Hermione was anything but eager as she walked up to the hat and tentatively placed it on her head, a far cry from her former eagerness. The result was... unexpected...
