Chapter 1

I am 18 today and am visiting my best friend Tammy on the outskirts of Atlanta for the weekend. I brushed my long blonde and red hair over my shoulder as we discussed my boyfriend's behaviour 3 days prior.

Tammy was sitting opposite me, head thrown back as she laughed at the situation. Her recently died red hair shaved down one side of. Her laugh made me think back to the day we met.

We met in a children's home at age 14. My family put me there as they hated me with a passion. I had started acting out, trying drugs, smoking, hanging out with friends till 3 or 4 in the morning. Thing is, they didn't want to listen to me about what had made me act that way and gave up on me. I hate them just as much and they hated me, if not more.

Tammy and I got on like a house on fire and we both wanted a fresh start, so we decided to run away together.

Tammy, on her 15th birthday, told me of her plan to leave the upper end of town and head into the sticks where no one would ask her questions. I begged her to let me come to but being 4 months younger she was hesitant.

Finally, after much pleading, she conceded, and we finalised out plan. Tammy and I split up after two months of travelling however, as she wanted to head to the next town again. We stole a mobile each and exchanged numbers before we parted and have stayed in contact ever since.

Me stealing that mobile is what led me to my boyfriend and his older brother. Both Tammy and I, call the older brother 'Pops' as we see him as a father figure. Not the best role model, but loyal as hell. He was offering to be my chauffer for this weekend trip and had arrived 20 minutes ago to take me back home.

"Sorry Pops, do you need to leave soon?" I asked turning to look at him in the chair next to me. I didn't realise that time had gone so quickly.

"Na darlin', you take your sweet-ass time" he said, opening a can of beer.

Tammy and I changed topic onto her new job here in town, both of us drinking our own beers, both a little tipsy when there was a loud thump into the door.

"I thought you said no one else was coming?" I asked, curious as to who was at her door. Nobody knew that Tammy lived here except for a select few, and those people understood that we were having a 'girly' weekend.

Tammy shook her head in confusion. "Maybe they saw Pops come in and thought you had gone" she said and left to open the door.

I got up and walked to the window getting my cigarettes out of my pocket. I lit one and turned to Pops.

"So what time am I allowed to go back?"

"Don't be like that darlin'. You know D don't like this arrangement, but it's the way the courts work" Pops replied, stealing a cigarette and lighting it for himself.

"I know" I sighed and took a drag, "It just sucks that its on my birthday. I wanted to spend it with him, but that skank did this on purpose." I did not have a good relationship with my boyfriend's ex-partner.

Pops pulled me into a hug and rested his chin on top of my head. "I think she is trying to take him away from me" I whimpered, trying to hold back the tear.

"That ain't happening. We both know you are D's world, he ain't giving you up without a fight. She-" A scream interrupted the end of that comment. I knew that scream. It was Tammy. Pops and I threw our cigarettes down and started running down the hallsto the door.

I heard a strange gurgle mixed with crying and I pulled to a stop. Pops pushed past me to the scene.

I saw Tammy on a heap on the floor, blood pouring out of her neck. A man who I had recognised as a worker in the shop below the flat was leaning over Tammy leaning down and biting her wrist. Pops slammed into the man punched him and pushed him out of the door.

I fell to my knees hugging Tammy close to me and tried to calm her down.

"Brooke, I.. Ah! I-I-I l-love you" Tammy whispered softly before shutting her brown eyes.

Sobs were ripping from my chest and I felt her shudder then fall limp. My best friend was dead.

Pops knelt down beside me and rubbed my back, trying to sooth me down, but nothing could calm me from losing my new-found sister.

I have no idea how much time had passed with me sitting on the floor, when I heard a groan below me. I looked down and saw Tammy looking straight as me. Only, it wasn't her eyes which stared into mine. The were misty, almost clouded.

I started to shake vigorously and she-her-it, began to snap its jaws at me. I froze, confused on what to do. It was all I could do to restrain her-IT-from biting my arm. Tears fell from my eyes and I yelled for Pops, who I didn't even realise had left, as I started to lose my grip on her shoulders.

Suddenly, a fire poker smashed through Tammy's head and I let out a scream.

"Come on, them things are surroundin' the 'ouse."

They were the last words I heard before I blacked out.
