Arthur could not believe this was happening again. Betrayed again by someone he was close to, someone he had trusted. It had happened time and time again, Morgana, Aggravaine, even Guinevere, but this betrayal was different. This was different because this person was probably closer to him than anyone else. This was different because he had trusted this person more than anyone else.
But he also realized that this was a different betrayal for another reason too. Because whenever he had found out about another person's betrayal, it had always been while they were doing something to harm him. Morgana was crowned queen of Camelot, Aggravaine helped her siege the city, Guinevere had snuck away for a private moment with Lancelot. It was different because they had never revealed their betrayal in order to help him.
It was different because none of the other traitors had been lying on the ground dying after revealing their betrayal.
Arthur fell to his knees beside the man, a man who was either a traitor or a friend or maybe both. As the man gasped and choked Arthur could not help but reach out a comforting hand, pulling the traitor close to him as he slowly faded away.
Because this was a different sort of death. This was different because this person was closer to him than anyone else. This was different because he had trusted this person more than anyone else. This was different because this person had just sacrificed their secret and their life in order to protect him.
This was different because this was Merlin.
AN: I suppose you could say this is a companion fic to my one-shot, Good Servants are Hard to Come By. So if you want to read more into how Merlin died you can read that fic as well, but it's not necessary.
This was originally going to be two fics exploring how Merlin was different to Arthur compared to everyone else but I realized I could merge them, I planned on making it longer but decided to write a drabble instead… I think you could say this is my first drabble actually, because all my drabbles get too long and turn into one-shots.
Hope you liked it as always read and review!
