"Common babe!" he yelled at me. "You have to jump!" he smiled widely at me, causing my stomach to go into knots. He always knew how to do that somehow.
"I cant!" I backed away from the cliff.
"I'll be right here!" he shouted back. He struggled to keep afloat as he spread his arms wide. Psh as if he would really be able to catch me from a 15 foot drop. "Babe look out behind you!"
I didn't even look behind me as I jumped off the cliff screaming bloody murder. My stomach went in knots again as I travelled in freefall. Instantly the cold water sent every nerve ending in my body to freeze, making me scream louder. I finally resurfaced, gasping for air.
And what was he doing?
Laughing his head off.
I scowled at him, instantly realizing there was no one behind me.
"Screw you!" I yelled laughing.
"Babe you know…."
The memory started to fade, but I cried out loud, trying to reach for it and keep it with me. I had to hear what he was going to say, but it was too far gone now.
Everything was dark.
There was a faint beeping noise in the background, along with a pump. There were people wherever I was, talking, even laughing. They're loud booms and whispers all made their way to my ears, instantly sending pain throughout my skull. I whimpered.
The pounding got worse as the voices became clearer. I started to become more aware of my surroundings. I felt as if I was waking from a long sleep, everything heavy and fuzzy.
What kind of nap did I take?
I felt my toes begin to tingle. The tingle spread throughout my whole leg, moving to the other, and making its way up my hip, eventually touching every part of my body. I became aware of a hand hiding my own, their thumb stroking the back of my hand up and down.
What was he doing? Peeta always went side to side.
This isn't right..
My eyes shot open with panic and I gasped. Everything in the room went silent except for the hospital machines. I looked around me and saw faces I didn't know. Everything was white, as usual in a hospital, but why was I in the hospital?
The light temporarily blinded me, sending even more pain throughout my head. I gripped my head with my free hand, still being aware of someone else's.
"Easy, Katniss, a voice said.
Oh but not any voice.
His. I began to tremble and refused to open my eyes. This had to be a nightmare or something. Maybe I just needed to wake up again. Yea, that was it. I squeezed my eyes shut and concentrated as much as I could to try and wake up from this nightmare.
"Katniss?" he asked, his voice filled with fake worry. I instantly knew why there were so many people in my room, faces I didn't know.
He was just putting on another show.
But this wasn't right. Where was Peeta?
I forced myself to look at him, and I instantly shuddered.
"Gale?" I asked, my voice hoarse, my words sounding weak.
"I'm right here baby," he said, squeezing my hand just a little too hard. I had to bite back my yelp. I tried to sit up, but he pushed me back down. "Now hun. Not too fast, you've been out for a while."
"How-" my thoughts stopped me. "Why the hell are you here?" I blurted out. Gale looked at me in shock. I could hear the whispers break out in the room.. I looked past his cold eyes and looked at all of these faces. "Who are all of you?" before anyone had a chance to respond, a doctor came in. He looked surprised as well, and clutched the clipboard tighter, obviously not expecting me to be awake.
"Doctor!" I yelled. "There's been a mistake all of these people have to leave," I looked at Gale. "Including you. Where's Peeta?" I asked demandingly, my voice coming back to me. I tugged my hand away from him, and cradled it in my chest.
"That's no way to talk to your husband Katniss,"
I felt myself get sick. I began to laugh nervously. This had to be a joke. A very mean joke and when I got my hands on Peeta I would strangle him for him not being here.
"You are not my husband." Gale's face tighten, his eyebrows furrowed.
"Katniss," the doctor stepped into my view. I looked around, the crowd had left. It was just me, the doctor and Gale. "My name is Doctor Snow, I've been looking after you after your accident." I silently looked at him confused. Accident? What happened to me?
The doctor cleared his throat. "You may be a little confused, so let me explain to you what happened."
"Confused?" Gale roared. I flinched from his sudden outburst. "I'm her husband for Christ's sake!"
"Mr. Hawthorne I'm going to have to ask you to leave." The doctor said after watching me flinch back form my so called husband. He could see the fear in my eyes. "Your wife may be slightly disoriented from her fall and may have had some memory loss. In order for her to get on the right track to recovery I can't have you yelling at her." Gale scoffed at the doctor, causing my cheeks to blush from embarrassment. How could I have been married to someone so rude?
"The doctor's right," I squeaked out. "Please leave," I looked down. I could practically feel the rage coming off of him, but realizing he had no choice, he left slamming the door.
There was an awkward silence in the air and I looked at the doctor as if he was my lifeline.
"Do you know your name?" the doctor finally asked. I gulped.
Did I remember my name?
I began to panic, searching for anything in my head that would help me, but I remembered what Gale had said to me.
"Katniss," I said. I looked up at the doctor for confirmation, and his small smile relieved me.
"Do you know your last name?" he asked, but I shook my head. There were three different names in my head that I could choose from, but none of them were right. I couldn't even think of my real last name. At the age of 15 I changed my last name so I couldn't be associated with my awful family.
Unfortunately I could remember those painful memories. I shook my head, and tried to concentrate on what the doctor was saying.
"Well, since you are married to Gale, your last name would Hawthorne." The doctor told me.
Katniss Hawthorne, that was not right.
"He's not my husband," I claimed. "This is all wrong. I'm married to someone else please," I begged. The Doctor gave me a sympathetic smile, and I knew there was nothing he could do to help me. I would stuck again, stuck in a monster's control.
"I know all of this may be very confusing so I am going to tell you what I know, and maybe we can help you remember," I shook my head, and waited for him to sit down. "You've been in the hospital for about a week now. You were admitted when your husband brought you here saying that you fell down the stairs and you wouldn't wake up. After doing an MRI, we discovered that there was swelling in your brain so we put you in a small coma so there would be no significant damage." I gulped and looked at him.
But how could I have been with Gale?
Painful memories rushed back into my head, causing me to cringe and gasp at the sharp pain that was cutting through my skull.
Bruises, pills, slamming doors, shouting. Flashes of me crying in my room alone, or Gale flinging glass bottles at the door, trying to get me to come back out. And the pain, oh the pain. That's all I felt for weeks, months. I felt myself get broken down into nothing. I let it happen. I couldn't remember why, and I couldn't remember how I stopped it.
"I'm married to Peeta Mellark," I blurted out.
Katniss Mellark? That was right. That sounded normal.
"Doctor you have to believe me," I pleaded. His eyes looked sad, he felt bad for me. He sighed, and flipped through his notes again.
"You may have experienced some memory loss as well." He stopped and shook his head, not knowing what to say next. I couldn't blame him, how do you tell a patient with memory loss that they are no longer married to the most wonderful man, but rather married to a monster of an ex-boyfriend? "What's the last thing you remember Katniss?" he asked. I bit my lip, trying to search for some sort of memory in the darkness.
"I remember jumping off a cliff," I breathed out. "I was with my husband Peeta. He teased me and tricked me into jumping in. He was telling me something… I can't remember," I felt tears prickle my eyes.
What a fucked up plot twist I just woke up into.
"Well Mrs. Hawthorne," he began. I glared at him for using that last name, but he continued. "According to the records that were given to us, you are indeed married to Gale. Your address had been switched over a year ago to the same residence as him. I don't know exactly how far back your memories could have been erased, but what I can tell you is that you will heal. Eventually little things will start coming back to you."
I didn't look at him, but rather looked out the window. I couldn't comprehend what I was hearing. How could someone be playing such a cruel joke on me? Whether it was person or the universe at work, I was angry.
Everything was so perfect and effortless with Peeta. I was so happy. I glanced down at my hand, and saw the huge rock sitting on my ring finger. I shuddered, remembering it was originally a gold band. I couldn't help when the tears started to pour down my face uncontrollably, making my vision blurry.
My hands came to my face and I began to sob.
I sobbed for myself.
