AN: This is the first NCIS: Los Angeles story I've posted. I've written a few (multi-chapter pieces) which I may one day get around to posting!

This one is just a short one shot taking place after 5x02.

Disclaimer: I don't own NCIS: LA... but like everyone here, I wish I did!

Enjoy! Ellé xo

Kensi hesitated for just a moment as she stared down at her partner, who was clearly no longer aware of his surroundings as he dozed off. She had overheard Hetty tell Callen that Deeks hadn't slept since it all happened and she breathed a sigh of relief when she saw the worries and memories leave his body as it finally succumbed to exhaustion. Kensi wasn't sure what to do. Did she leave? Did she keep talking to him until she was sure he was out? Another look at him answered her question.

She didn't want to leave him. Instead she arranged herself so that she was lying back against the couch right next to him- Their faces only inches apart. His face twitched as she settled near him, "what happens next?" she whispered, only half expecting a response.

"It's a love story," he murmured.

Well that reply right there was enough to keep her awake for the next hour as she tried to think of every possible meaning for his answer. Eventually exhaustion over took her as well and she unconsciously curled into his side as she got comfortable. There would be time to discuss the hidden meaning behind his words later. Right now she was just happy he was sleeping.

Deeks awoke to the morning light creeping in through the crack in the curtains and the soft sounds of the television that had been left on all night. He was warm and still tired as he stirred and had every intention of drifting back off to sleep when a thought occurred to him. He had slept. Well and truly slept. Not just dozed for an hour or so but fallen into a deep sleep for a number of hours. Snapping his eyes open, he immediately found the source of his warmth. Kensi.

The brunette was sound asleep, resting against his side with her head on his shoulder, knees pulled up against him and a hand resting low on his stomach. Deeks couldn't help the little smile that found its way onto his face. She really didn't realise how much he relied on her to get him through everything. Deeks sighed and relaxed back against the couch, quite content to stay in the position he was in right now.

The morning show on the television had the time as being a little after six thirty. He didn't need to be up and Kensi still had time to sleep for a while longer. Deeks just lay back and watched her sleep. Her hair was curled around her face and her mouth was slightly open. She looked relaxed and he loved to watch her like this. It took him a while to realise he had been drawing lazy patterns on her back and when he did notice, his hands froze in place. He couldn't risk being caught by her.

But it was too late.

"Don't stop," she murmured, "that felt nice."

The sudden panic he felt before disappeared and was quickly replaced with embarrassment as she stirred and snuggled closer to his chest. After a second, he relaxed and let his finger continue their tracing over her back.

"I have work," she sighed, still not opening her eyes, "I need to get up,"

When she made no effort to move, he let out a small chuckle, "how's that working out for you?"

"Shut up," she whined, "you're comfy."

He was really enjoying listening to a half asleep Kensi attempt to wake up. Kensi's eyes fluttered open and her gaze settled on him and in that second, he finally had an answer to Nate's question.

Love was what made his and Kensi's partnership unique. He loved her.

Just a short piece, but I hope you liked it! Let me know with a review!
