THE WINTER QUEEN
There is a price when
you venture near the throne.
The War of the Five Kings has come to an end at last. Yet the journey is so very far from over. Arwyn Frey is a girl of quiet beauty and a simple daughter of the Crossing, who has been selected above her many sisters to marry the newly crowned King in the North, Robb Stark. It is the highest of honors any woman could receive, but as she journeys further north, she can't help but feel the darkness that grows in her mind at the prospect.
As she begins to rise to the demands of her exalted position, Arwyn finds that ruling a kingdom has much that comes at a great cost. The king keeps many secrets from her, among them his two young sons, and she finds that hidden among them many enemies plot in secret, scheming for their downfall at every turn. There is an ancient evil that lurks further north beyond the Wall, and far to the east a shadow begins to stir, threatening their precious hold on the land.
The winter has come, and in it Arwyn must wield a cunning that she never thought herself to possess. As she struggles to be the queen she must be, with destruction at the ready to snatch away all that she treasures most, suddenly she finds that her heart has fallen into a trap far more dangerous than any she has come close to yet—the danger of falling in love. Now Arwyn must fight hardest to protect all she holds most dear, but will it be enough? Or will the darkness take them. . . .
My body shook and quivered so violently
I felt as thought the very muscles in my limbs must be coming undone.
And, faintly, I could feel the gentle hold I once held on reality begin to slip away.
"I—I don't know if I can do this," I heard myself murmuring. "What if I can't. . . ."
Then I felt the tight grip at my hands, suddenly grounding me, forcing me
to remember myself. As I looked into Sansa's eyes, they burned with
such a fierceness, it frightened me. And when she spoke, she told
me the words that would sustain me in my greatest need.
"You will know loss, you must be stronger."
