The next few hours were a blur as Clementine worked alongside with Bonnie, until finally, she was given a new job up in the greenhouse with Reggie. It was there, where she heard the cries of Sarah again. Clementine was not known to be a soft hearted person, but once she heard the whimpers of Sarah's cries, her heart seemed to ache a little bit.
She followed the sound, and saw Sarah sitting up on the greenhouse wall, clutching her face. Once Clementine actually got a good look at he friend, she couldn't help but to cringe just a bit as she saw the bright red hand print on her face. "Hey..." She said softly, and approached the other girl. "You want a hug?" She asked as she looked down. Sarah didn't even look up at her. "Okay, well, I owe you one then." She added when she didn't get an answer.
"My dad's never hit me before." Sarah said finally. "Even when I was really bad."
"He didn't want to." Clementine said softly.
"Thanks for trying to help." Sarah replied.
Clementine shrugged, "It was nothing... Now let's get to work..." She said. The two girls then went to work on cutting and picking the berries. It was an easy job, but Clementine could still tell that there was something wrong with Sarah. She was probably going to be upset for a while, but Clem just wished she could do something to make her feel better. She was just a little girl, lost in the apocalypse, and scared, like everyone else. And it didn't help that she got to watch Reggie get pushed off a building by Carver. This was not a good place for Sarah... This was not a good place for anybody. The day only kept getting worse as Clem got attacked by zombies and everything else.
The only good thing was the fact that she found out that Luke was safe, and that he was going to help them. But even after all this stuff, her thoughts still lingered around Sarah. Why? She wasn't sure if she was being quite honest with herself. And to make things even more worse, she had to go up to Carver's office, where she found Alvin beat up and bloody. Why couldn't Carver just leave her alone, and let her go back to Sarah. They needed each other right now, especially Sarah.
After a really long day of working, and of planning an escape, stealing the walkie talkies, and listening to Kenny vent about Duck, it was finally time for Clementine to lie back down on the stupid beds out in the yard, and get some shut eye. Everyone was sleeping soundly, until Clem heard a voice. "Are you awake, Clem?" She heard Sarah ask. Their beds were right beside each other, so she didn't have to talk too loud.
"I'm awake." Clementine whispered back softly.
"I don't like Carver." Sarah replied. "He's mean."
"I don't think anybody likes Carver." Clem answered as she moved over just a bit to get in Sarah's bed so that the two girls lay beside each other. Clementine then found herself wrapping her arms around Sarah's body, whose was much bigger than her own. She was cold, but that was to be expected since they had no blankets out in the yard where they slept. They could keep each other warm with their body heat though.
"What are you doing?" Sarah asks.
"Giving you your hug I owe you." Clementine answered simply. She the felt the older girl relaxing at her touch, and the two girls hugged one another in the tiny bed.
"Thank you." Sarah whispered.
"If it happens again," Clementine started, referring to the slap. "You should hold your breath. It helps with the pain." She told Sarah as a matter a fact. "A lot."
"Really?" Sarah asked.
"Pinky swear." Clementine replied.
"I'm glad you're my friend, Clem." Sarah said randomly. "It's nice having you around." But Clementine was glad to hear these words. She didn't know if Sarah valued their friendship as much as she did, and now she knew.
"Does your face still hurt?" The younger girl asked as she looked over at Sarah.
She nodded, "A little."
"Close your eyes." Clem ordered, and Sarah obliged, shutting her eyes tightly. Suddenly, Clementine's lips were on Sarah's damaged cheek. It was hot from the slap, but Clementine just hoped that this would make Sarah fell better. "It'll make you feel better." She explained once she was done. She then felt Sarah's arms tighten around her smaller body.
"Goodnight Clementine." Sarah whispered.
