  KP Fannie Committee With the nomination period over, we are ready to start voting for the best stories and authors of 2011. Here is your list of nominees. You may vote for as many or as few categories as you wish, whether it's only 1 or all 23. You may only vote once per category. There is no splitting your vote between nominees. The goal here is to get each of the categories down to 5 finalists. If there are ties, there may be more than 5 in a few. A story may only qualify to advance to the final round if it gets at least one vote. Stories with 0 votes may not advance. So it is possible for a category to contain less than 5 nominees if not enough stories are voted on. And naturally any category that currently has 5 or less nominees does not needed to be voted on. Round 1 voting will end at 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time on Wednesday, February 29th. I thought the Fannie definition was just a 15,000 word count limit, not chapters... although it should be noted that, technically, the classic definition of a short story is 9000 words or less (5-20 pages,) so Mission Log: Z is actually a short novella... but that doesn't take into account the word bloat that FFN adds with author notes, etc. I'd say you're safe but... What I think this shows, very clearly, is that the committee really needs to re-publish the actual rules as they currently stand, as it's pretty clear that no one is quite sure what they are anymore. 2/9/2012 #4 |
| SHADO Commander Edit/addendum to my post above… although" Mission Log: Z" can be considered a novella from a publisher's point of view, in terms of a contest, it would be more technically correct to call it a novelette, as it has a word count of between 7,500 and 17,500. For the record, for the Hugo and Nebula awards, the World Science Fiction Society and The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America respectfully agree on the following definitions: Short Story – 7,500 words or less. Novelette – 7,500 – 17,499 Novella – 17,500 – 40,000 Novel - 40,000 words and up Of course, adhering to those definitions now, after the voting, would also knock out purplegirl761's "The Princess And the Dragon," and leave only three nominees... so for this year I'd say let's just ignore all that and NEXT year run separate categories for Novelette, Novella and Novel, so that some moderate length stories don't have to go against 250,000+ behemoth's like my own At The Centerfold Of The Storm. | SHADO Commander Iapsa - Slipgate is referring to the fact that what is currently at the top of the page is only a list of the initial pool of submissions for nomination. We're still waiting on the results of the first round of actual voting, although categories where there were less than five submissions should go to the final round automatically. By my count, going down the list, that's: Best Kigo, Best Novel Sized Story, Best Short Story, Best Young Author and Best New Author, while the award for Best Writing Team never went to vote as the only nominee was last year's winner. For all the other categories there will probably be several more rounds of voting to knock them down to a list of Final Nominees... though with 6 submissions each, I expect that Best Songfic, Best A.U., Best Wrongsick, and Best Series all stand a good chance of being settled with this first vote.
