~Idriel~

'It... sounds quite fun,' I said, nodding. 'Did Gregior do that sort of thing?'

Iselli-

"Yes," I said. "But he mostly used it to get drunk with his close friends. Over the years, several of the nobles left his court. Apparently, court under Queen Ellimere was quite an occasion. I've heard the Chancellor talk about it. Oh - here we are."

We had come to an enormous set of double doors inlaid with the golden towers. There were several guards standing outside.

I glanced at the guards - was I hoping to see Oliver again? - as they opened the doors to the Queen's rooms. I blinked; the rooms were beautifully decorated, and very large.

Iselli-

A guard escorted us through the vast antechamber, through an elaborate sitting room, down a corridor lined with beautiful paintings, through one of the beautifully-carved doors, into yet another sitting room even more opulent than the first. One entire wall of the sitting room opened out into a vast balcony.

~Idriel~

I couldn't help staring around me as we walked. The balcony looked lovely in the afternoon sun. There was an ornate fountain there too, and the sound of the water was very soothing. I found myself smiling properly.

Idriel and I stepped through the gossamer curtains onto the large balcony. Marble clicked under our shoes. Ahead of us, the central Palace garden stretched away. I could see people walking along the flower beds and groves of trees. A table was covered in a richly-embroidered cloth, and set with silver and porcelain. There were four chairs, positioned so that everyone would have a view of the gardens.

"It really is beautiful," I said.

~Idriel~

'Mm,' I agreed, nodding and gazing out over the gardens. 'It is.'

Iselli-

There were some instruments set up in the corner, and I wondered if musicians would be in to serenade us.

"You're musical, aren't you?" I asked Idriel, and motioned towards the instruments. "Can you play any of those?"

I looked at the instruments and smiled again. 'I can play the flute,' I replied. 'And I can play the harp a little, too.'

Iselli-

"Really?" I said, impressed. "I've always loved hearing the harp. You... wouldn't mind?"

'Would I be allowed?' I asked, looking at the harp cautiously.

"I don't see why not," I said.

'Well... all right,' I said, going over the harp and sitting on the stall by it. I hadn't practiced in a while, but I thought that I could remember a relatively simple tune. I paused for a moment while I went through the start of the tune in my head, and then tentatively started to play.

I smiled and leaned against the waist-high marble railing encircling the balcony.

I found myself relaxing as I got into the tune. I'd always found the music soothing.

Iselli-

The Abhorsen was very talented - though that didn't surprise me.

~Idriel~

I was surprised by how much the music cheered me up, actually. I had to concentrate quite a lot on the tune, so I didn't get it wrong, and it seemed to get rid of the depressing thoughts I'd had for the past few days.

I grinned as I listened to the tune. Iselli spotted me as I peered through the gossamer curtains, but apparently Idriel was concentrating on playing. When the music came to an end, I clapped enthusiastically.

I looked up - and blinked in surprise when I saw the Queen. I flushed a bit as I stood up and curtseyed; I hadn't realised that she'd been watching.

"That was very good," I said, coming forward and grinning. "How long have you played the harp?"

~Idriel~

'I played it quite a lot when I was younger, Majesty,' I replied, still feeling embarrassed. 'Recently, I've just had the occasional practice. Nothing regular.'

I nodded, then leaned on the balcony railing overlooking the garden, and inhaled the fresh air. "I wish I could hold meetings out here," I said.

"The Council wouldn't fit on your balcony," Iselli pointed out.

"Thank you for telling me," I said dryly.

'It's a lovely view,' I commented, moving away from the instruments again. 'The gardens are beautiful.'

"I love coming out here, whenever I get the chance," said the Queen.

I took a step forward. "Majesty," I said cautiously, "have you thought about reconvening court?"

The Queen made a face. "Not until you mentioned it."

'You don't like the idea of it?' I asked, seeing the Queen's expression.

Elandri-

"It's not that," I said. "It's just, there are so many other things I need to worry about first."

"It would go a long way towards projecting an image of stability," Iselli pointed out. "And it would get several of the nobles on your side."

I shrugged; the Clayr did have a point.

'And it sounds fun,' I added hesitantly, before reflecting that having fun was not going to be top of the Queen's list.

I smiled and looked at Idriel. "You think so?"

"Court is whatever the ruler makes it," Iselli said. "For Gregior, it was just an opportunity to have drinks with his friends. But you can do so much more than that."

I glanced at Iselli, and then looked back at the Queen. 'Like, music and dancing and theatre,' I added, echoing what Iselli had told me.

I smiled to myself. That didn't sound so bad, actually.

"And the nobles here are starting to run out of things to do," Iselli added. "They can only play tennis and walk around the gardens a finite number of times, Majesty."

"How much organization will I actually have to do?" I asked. "I don't want to take any time away from these trials."
