The winner of the previous month's competition will be the judge.

Like most challenges, there are rules.

  1. The submission has to be published between the date that the prompt is issued and the deadline.
  2. Entries must be at least five hundred words.
  3. The judge will list fandoms they are comfortable with reading. If you would like to write for a fandom they are not familiar with, you'll need to construct a comprehensive primer to accompany your submission.
  4. Any pairing you wish is open, and you may also do general series.
  5. If you would like to submit original work, post it here and link in the thread from rule #10.
  6. Write about what the prompt means to you. Interpret it as you wish.
  7. Each author may only submit one story per month.
  8. Crossovers are allowed at the discretion of the judge.
  9. It would be best if you put "For the Monthly Oneshot Contest at Caesar's Palace" or something similar in the summary, but it is not required.
  10. Place a hyperlink to your submissions in this thread.

  1. The judge may not beta, edit, or view any submission before publication.
  2. Winners must be announced no later than one week after the deadline.
  3. It is not required, but it is encouraged, to review every submission.
  4. Judges cannot compete.

If you are not a judge, please do not post in this thread. The post will be deleted.

First Place: so this is war. by HeyJude95

Second Place: where the water was by overstreets

Third Place: Defining Moments by Victor Wizard Half-Blood Spy

Guys, I had a really hard time picking second and third places. HeyJude95's fic was amazing, it was a clear first. I encourage you all to continue writing, all your fics were fabulous, everyone was different. One was about Cinna, one was about Gale and Madge, one was about Cato and one was about Johanna, Finnick, Mags and Portia; everything was different and not how I thought you'd use the prompts. PM me if you have any inquiries or questions! I'm always here to help!

fireflies by the epic bookworm

and we will build empires by spin me round again

No Utopia, No Paradise by destroy this city of delusion

he can't be fixed by keep my issues drawn

Iron Horse by irmaida

Note: irmaida and keep my issues drawn, I did review your stories but didn't realise that I was not logged in, sorry for any confusion caused!

1. Iron Horse by irmaida [The idea for this is so great, and there's a certain rawness about the emotions it evoked in me]

2. he can't be fixed by keep my issues drawn [This comes a very close second, in fact it took me a good fifteen minutes to decide first and second places. I love the pairing and the concept of an AU where Finnick is mad so much, and the writing is also superb!]

3. fireflies by the epic bookworm and and we will build empires by spin me round again [I couldn't decide! The first had such a lovely ending full of hope, and the second was written so well!]

Also congratulations to destroy this city of delusion and InSaNeAnNiE for great, solid pieces. It was a very tough decision to place the top three. Thank you so much for taking the time to participate :) If there are any questions, don't hesitate to message me.

Month: October

Prompt: Dancing on their graves(It IS Halloween this month, after all)

Judge: ShineTheTribute

Tear Ducts by Irmaida(

The Waltz by Caladbolg777 (

1st: The Waltz- I loved the poetic way it was written and the comparison of death to dancing

Runner Up- Tear Ducts- Another beautiful piece, the end was heartbreakingly lovely

Both entries were amazing, and although I wish someone had taken the prompt on the metaphorical sense I intended, I loved the way the entries interpenetrated the prompt. Good job, both of you( Sorry this wasn't up three days ago, RL was being stupid)

Month: November

Judge: Caladbolg777

1) An Odd Thank-You by ShineTheTribute - (

2) The Last Thank You by District11-Olive - (

3) Stings, Screams, and Arrows by Our Little Infinity - (

4) Thanksgiving in Panem by Belle453 - (

5) A Reason to Say Thanks by Zoe Alexandra Morrison

6) Title: More Than Words by DarkGoddess76

Winner(s): A Reason to Say Thanks

The runner up was More Than Words. I appreciate the high fic turnout and it was lovely to read them all. I think a general and fair critique for all of these fic, including the winner, is that I thought there was too much explanation. That's totally fine given that the prompt is kinda tricky and I completely understand the desire for it. I believe this is partially my fault too because I didn't think of something along the lines of "be clear but also be vague enough where I have to figure things out a little."

Having said that I liked everyone's approaches to the topic as well, and I think with some polishing (which to be fair every story could use polishing) these entries can become greater than they already are. Thanks for participating and I look forward to judging again!

This was very hard to judge; every entry was amazing and I literally wanted eight winners. But especial congratulations/thanks to Estoma for great portrayals of Cinna and Finnck, Rue for her thought provoking entry about the tribute, Johanna for linking Foxface's suicide-by-choice so well to flowers, and John for an insight into something I've been wondering about ever since reading THG. Well done to everybody :) ♥
