4 July 2013: So it's been seven years to the day since I first got onto fanfiction. It's been with me throughout all my teenage years. I've met some really good authors - and really good people - who have helped me grow, both as a writer and as a person. I thought I'd write a little message here about what it means for me.
Lately, I've been doing a lot of thinking about fanfiction, about what kind of art it is. And here's what I think: fanfiction is more than just a story written out of self-gratification. Anyone can write a story, after all. A real fanfiction is a tribute to the story that inspired it. It takes the themes, motifs and characters of a story and it produces something original and new, in the mold of your own style. To write it and to do it well, you need to be able to truly understand an author's vision and convey that with your words. When you write fanfiction, as long as you put all your heart and effort into it, you produce lasting, meaningful art.
So don't let anyone tell you what you're doing is silly or masturbatory. Become good at fanfiction and you become a good author for life.
Now that I've realised this, I don't feel as compelled to write fanfiction anymore. I know why I did it so much and why I was passionate about it. I feel like I've learned all the essential lessons I could from here. I also feel like I've grown up, too.
I'm leaving my stories up here, but I doubt they'll ever get finished now. It's a bit of a disappointment for me, but I'm looking ahead and there are other things I want to do. There are other forms of writing I want to explore.
This isn't a goodbye. I do still read fanfiction and I do, on occasion, still feel inspired to write it. I still feel like I'm the same person as ever. I also continue to write creatively about anime in the form of blogging. So while I doubt I will be on this site very much anymore, you can still track me and my writing down at, where I discuss the anime I love.
Thank you for reading and (hopefully!) enjoying my stories. Thanks for all the good memories, to everyone who writes and contributes in their own little ways to the fanfiction community. I sincerely hope everyone gets as much enjoyment out of the hobby as I did. To all you aspiring fanfiction writers out there - keep writing. You may not have reached your fullest potential yet, but that doesn't mean your stories cannot bring joy to others or to yourself.
And that's why I've always truly adored this site, because it's a product of sheer love and nothing will ever change that. We're all just fans, writing about the things we love.
So thank you. I really appreciate it.
