Author has written 1 story for Harry Potter. Any fanfiction I write. and much of what I like, is likely to be disturbing and wholly inappropriate for younger audiences. I generally only read, or write, Harry Potter fanfiction and will outline my likes/dislikes of Harry Potter fanfiction below. All characters' ages are changed to be over 18 in my stories. Likes: - Exploration of glossed over magic from canon. Canon contains so many magics and magical beings the uses and implications of which are rarely expounded upon in canon and fanfiction is a fantastic medium to explore this. Curses of the kind on the Defence Against the Dark Arts position, the Mind Arts, potions affecting the mind, the Veela allure, etc. - Creative uses of magic. I like a fast paced magical duel as much as the next person but I also very much enjoy reading authors who use more creative methods to reach victory. The Brightest Witch in the Darkest House was fantastic for this, highlighting the unexpected (and often disturbing) ways magic can be used while sticking quite closely to canon magic as well. - Magic requiring intent to drive it is something I enjoy in fanfiction as well, it is taken too far in many works however when you have actually complex spells being done on the basis of intent and power alone. Personally I prefer an interpretation of magic where magic follows an almost programming like basis; learning a spell is difficult because you are training your magic to respond in a certain way to a trigger and once it is learned it is easy to repeat, learning non-verbal spellwork is just reworking the original training. Dislikes: - Magical Oaths. If I could remove one fanfiction cliche from existence it would have to be this, it completely negates the need for trust between characters while simultaneously negating the value of the Unbreakable Vow and Veritaserum. Magical Oaths are also horribly dangerous, no one would allow teenagers to run around making declarations in which a single wrong word could kill them or remove their magic. - Magical contracts follow in the same vein as the above but with much less vitriol on my part because they are not as bad and also semi-canon. Fanon magical contracts, essentially a legal document which contains magic which forces its terms to be fulfilled are annoying and would change the shape of society significantly. If fanon magical contracts existed they would either almost never be used (like Unbreakable Vows in canon) or would be an ingrained part of society which would likely be used to exploit the poor/muggleborns/criminals. - Bashing the magical legal system on the basis of Veritaserum and pensieves. The legal system of Wizarding Britain is shown as being completely inept (possibly/implicitly corrupt) and ineffective. The problem with bashing it is that there really is no way to have a good legal system with Harry Potter magic. Veritaserum and pensieve memories are both worthless. Memory modification and perception altering spells make all testimony unreliable, committed a crime? Get someone to Obliviate you, Confund or Obliviate witnesses, use polyjuice, use a second hand wand. Even with a way to be certain of who committed the crime there are so many methods of coercion with the Imperius Curse only being the most obvious, a whole variety of potions, most notably love potions, could have people working against their will easily, after all what would you do for the person you love? - Weird Morality. Personally I would prefer no fanfiction to have extended internal or external monologues on the issue of morality because almost no authors can make them anything less than irritating and most are far worse than that. Having said that, it is made even worse when the characters' moral positions are inexplicable. This is most prevalent when characters come from a different culture/time and inexplicably conform to modern Western morality (often being the only character to do so) . There are few thing more jarring than someone raised in a slave owning or feudal society proclaiming the belief that all people are fundamentally equal and/or deserve human rights. - Tattletale the Master 12; Everyone inexplicably stopping whatever they are doing and politely waiting and listening to her expound on whatever point she wants to make and they then immediately believe her regardless of evidence or the fact she is a known villain thinker. |
