He makes it to ten stitches pulled before Sam's sudden silence snaps him out of his reverie. It's a mercy to the kid, honestly, to pass out, but then Dean looks up and sees Sam's eyes roll all the way back in his head, and his heart nearly stops. Immediately, Dean tries to put his focus on pushing down the memories.

"Sammy," Dean whispers. "Tell me you weren't doing what I think you were." He tucks the gun into his waistband and grabs Sam by the shoulders, trying to meet his eyes. "I'm sorry," Sam says again, tears falling freely now. "I should have let you do it, but I can't take it anymore. I'm not strong enough." Yet another voicemail fix-it.
