Pride - arrogance
Sloth - freeloading
Envy - excess discontent
Wrath - excess hate
Lust - insatiable craving
Gluttony - insatiable indulgence
Greed - insatiable hoarding
The Seven Deadly Sins are an evocative classic, something about them simply speaks to the human subconscious, even when times have changed and we understand they are not ("read as written") actually evil. As such I've been refining them into something more modern on and off for a while now.
Lust, Gluttony, and Greed are halfway interchangeable, one can crave food, find indulgence in excess income, and hoard whores, etc. etc.
Sinful pride is strictly external, you can't so much be internally proud as you must put others down for not being you. Envy is similar, no one can have anything you don't.
Sloth is not about being lazy, not about procrastination, it's about unwillingness to work, to provide, about being a parasite on family, society, even yourself in some ways.
Finally Wrath is not about a bad temper, or being a mean drunk, it's about seeing and making enemies where none were nor needed to be, e.g. racism. About measuring your own joy and pleasure by their reduction in others.
And then on the nature of evil.
When it is known there are actions that cause a nuclear meltdown of consequences when you try to justify them, do those actions need justification? You know, like the soviets and their traitors, so many imaginary people and families going missing, whatever did you mean by the state can't just kill people. It is not my prerogative to tell people not to be delusional, but must they also be idiots? Nazies would have been just another incredibly racist tyranny in the history books if they didn't make a spectacle of it. Even now projected Holocaust casualties are going up, while gulag and KGB casualties are dropping; who benefits?
Neither of these are things that would have archived documents to be explored at a later date, so it seems like Russia shifting attention away from the fact it never suffered for its dark phase like Germany did. And they're getting away with it, people don't give a second thought to decreasing statistics of Soviet crimes when they're shown next to the atrocity of the Holocaust ones. It wasn't genocide, it was a spectacle; and that's what people aren't okay with.
They tried to justify the unjustifiable, and are remembered for it, unlike the who knows how many historical regimes that were worse.
Humans are animals, will remain animals, and will never not be animals. The common definition of human includes biological directives and imperfections, and as a result we cannot soundly justify the expectation of moral purity from ourselves as a species. Concrete individuals, yes, abstract communities, no.
Deleted Bad Rant No One Cares About
But animals are not born with this understanding, and humans are far too averse to learning the better, not-paradoxical means of selfishness.
A philosophical zombie is a premise paradox. Something that explicitly is not something specific, but God themselves could not prove that it isn't that specific thing. Truly, when the proverbial CREATOR would fail to distinguish a philosophical zombie from the truth, who are you, to claim something is one? This explicit indistinguishability that defines a philo-zombie, is either true or false. If true, the philo-zombie is irrelevant; anyone could be, even you, even god, the zombie cannot self-define as one, and """actor""" becomes the "mask". If false, it is not a philo-zombie; if there is ANY unfalsifiable essence of being that would separate a philo-zombie from the living, it is no longer indistinguishable, and thus no longer a philo-zombie. Ponder philosophy with knowledge that only a god may calculate logic for logic's sake, and in doing so you become one; if you speculate that which has no principles differing from another existence, you either explicitly speculate that another, or the arbitrary separation under your scrutiny is an acceptable principle. If the latter, you ought to know you are a malevolent deity.
Schrödinger's cat is the perfect caricature, or representation of current mainstream interpretation, of quantum physics. It is filled with hidden variables (thickness of the chamber, LD50 of the poison, half-life and quantity of the radioactive element, sensitivity of the geiger counter, ventilation or lack of, etc.) that are summarily dismissed as unimportant; and the narrative forces the situation where mere observation is equivalent to interacting with the subject to the point of dramatically altering its physical structure (opening a closed system).
In truth, you could use an X-ray to take a timelapse of pictures of the cat, you could attach a sonar to the chamber wall for the same effect, the half-life almost directly tells you at which point radiation has certainly been emitted, you could calculate the air capacity of the chamber to determine where the original question becomes meaningless as the cat has suffocated, you could monitor the ventilation for changes in carbon-dioxide levels to determine when the cat stops breathing, - for the release of the poison, - for even the chemical flags of a rotting body. But no "see it's like a wave, if you look it stops being like that, you cant be sure without looking", like as if taking a X-ray involves vivisection without anesthesia and then hiring a painter to depict the gore before you bleed out.
I like high magic fantasy, and some settings I like in particular are:
-anything dungeons and dragons
-anything magic: the gathering
-anything mage: the awakening
-lord of the rings, though I the disuse of magic is bash-worthy
-warlock of the magus world
-fire force / 炎炎ノ消防隊
-buffy, but only fanfics
-zero no tsukaima, but only fanfics
-Everybody loves large chests, Recommendation
-and more than I have the patience for
- the world waits on evil, original story by loserthree on spacebattles forums.
- everything by user named hiver on spacebattles forums, 60/50 that i myself have read everything by him.
- one foot - another multiverse, ludicrous crossover by ars poetica on sufficientvelocity forums.
light novel recommendations:
overlord by maruyama
great overall, prepare for plenty of "sasuga" though. op but clueless and spineless mc, with op but oblivious servants.
isekai mahou wa okureteru by gamei hitsuji
delicious premise, great start, but all too soon decays into "basic op mc" harem male-fantasy. plenty of potential for au:s and fanfiction where the entirety of the female cast is not marginalized for a chance.
warlock of the magus world by wen chao gong / "the plagiarist"
a chinese man is reincarnated into the corpse of a prospective magus, in the middle of their journey to a camp where they would be evaluated and then distributed to various academies. mc reincarnates with his sci-fi a.i.-chip implant somehow having hitched the ride on his soul, and exploits his symbiotic computer to great effect. mc is a bit of a chinese stereotype though, and many of the much foreshadowed plans turn out somewhat simple; all of which in my opinion made up for with the depth and detail of the magic system.

the world waits on evil draconic runes, gathered here because nowhere else for some reason. applied before the object is 'finished', in pottery before the object fired, metal cookware before it's been used a few times and had absorbed fat, stitched cloths before half the stitches are in, woven cloths before the weave is completed. I vividly remember reading that a weapon would be finished after it has first tasted blood in true battle, but could not find written verification for that from the text itself.
runes with observed effects
-robust, health, durable, 'armored plate': enchanted with paste made of wood oils, powdered serpent liver (vampire waste fed chicken liver works), iron filings, ground up live plucked horse hair bulbs and papilla (preserved result works), and soils of particular quality, then covered with a cloth soaked in the same oils, and a gold thread weave, and finally set with a gemstone; only the paste is consumed in process. the rune makes things harder and more durable.
-'perfection'; apex predator: better at fighting, better at and with a tendency for violence. combined with fate made for a skeleton that could not be defeated in battle. Seems to involve pride in the natural state of self.
-accuracy: more accurate, better at following direction/orders. combined with fate made for a nearly prescient skeleton that could stack grains of sand behind a wall from 16 paces.
-magic: makes something magical, but often lacks the strength to accomplish anything of note on its own. grants a magical limb to a skeleton when combined with fate, generates a mirroring barrier surface against foreign magical limbs over the souls of a skeleton when combined with robust and fate. it is possible to use skeleton enchanted with magic to cast spells by feeding / lensing your own magical limb through them, but it is not clear how exactly this is done.
-silence/stealth: this rune means both of these, and the runic script has no runes for either alone. makes things more able to move silently and without notice, combined with fate made for a skeleton that could not be seen, heard, or be properly noticed even if it bumped into you.
-flight: makes something faster, most likely also lighter. combined with fate on a single heel on a skeleton, it floated god knows where held up by its heel, combined with fate on a whole skeleton, made it able to move at insane speeds.
-'fate', 'significance'; chosen one(s): this enchantment improves any other enchantment on the same object by an absurd degree inversely scaling with the number of identical enchantments in existence, and the effect can't be strengthened by reducing the number unless all articles manufactured are destroyed at the same time.
-'third soul'; soul of undeath: this rune does nothing alone, but causes other runes to affect the second soul, or control soul, of skeletons. Liches and vampires lack this second soul as the changes to their own make up for the lack of it, but one can be attached to lich's skeletal body. known as the third soul because it is created by the soul of the necromancer to be attached into the soul-connection, and with it the deceased soul, of the skeleton.
-crossroads: effect unclear, combined with fate and third soul seems to group a bunch of the third souls within a single entity, making mass control easier, and making it impossible to seize control of any single third soul without access to the central hub.
-road: effect unclear, combined with third soul, extends the range to which a necromancer can control a skeleton, even ignoring physical barriers.
-gate to plane of fire: formed of copper wire worked into steel (presumably), opens a gate portal to the plane of fire for so long as the object can survive the constant explosion doing so entails.
-protection, scale: creates a basic magical shield with the barest added intent, a hoop for example generates this shield into the disc of space it circles, and two hoops could be joined to create a cylinder.
runes without observed effects
-light, noted for having failed to function in likely poorly thought out experiment.
-darkness, noted for having failed to function in likely poorly thought out experiment.
-fire, noted that a whole skeleton should never be enchanted with this, no reason ever given.
-slime, mentioned in a plan to slime the waste disposal infrastructure to prevent build ups, unclear if it accomplished anything.
-different animals such as sparrow, fox, goat, dog, crane, most likely very literally the animal without any mythical significance.
-rune for spoken word, being heard, or 'meddle'
note on rune interaction
a skeletal dragon (not a dracolich), enchanted with fate-robust-magic-third soul-crossroads in an unspecified pattern, was able to cast magic on its own, still had access to its "breath weapon", and had two glowing wisps set into its eyes. it is heavily implied that the eyes are a result of the runic enchantment, but their exact function is not detailed. the skeletal dragon could wield its breath weapon, and cast its own spells which is a bit surprising because it is implied a human skeleton could not without the specific spells being inscribed on it, which the dragon lacked. attempting to magically "scan" the dragon causes the offending magical limb to mirror into itself (mentioned under magic rune), and if the specific means to bypass that effect is employed it reveals the dragons own soul(s), as well as those subordinated to it (mentioned under crossroads rune), which were described as trembling as if at the precipice of the reanimation spell being completed, most likely due to being held to dragon's soul rather than their own skeletons souls.
