the lesson of the moth

i was talking to a moth
the other evening
he was trying to break into
an electric light bulb
and fry himself on the wires

why do you fellows
pull this stunt i asked him
because it is the conventional
thing for moths or why
if that had been an uncovered
candle instead of an electric
light bulb you would
now be a small unsightly cinder
have you no sense

plenty of it he answered
but at times we get tired
of using it
we get bored with the routine
and crave beauty
and excitement
fire is beautiful
and we know that if we get
too close it will kill us
but what does that matter
it is better to be happy
for a moment
and be burned up with beauty
than to live a long time
and be bored all the while
so we wad all our life up
into one little roll
and then we shoot the roll
that is what life is for
it is better to be a part of beauty
for one instant and then cease to
exist than to exist forever
and never be a part of beauty
our attitude toward life
is come easy go easy
we are like human beings
used to be before they became
too civilized to enjoy themselves

and before i could argue him
out of his philosophy
he went and immolated himself on a patent cigar lighter
i do not agree with him
myself i would rather have
half the happiness and twice
the longevity

but at the same time i wish
there was something i wanted
as badly as he wanted to fry himself

America... just a nation of two hundred million used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns and no qualms about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable.

I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

The Edge...there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the only ones who have gone over.

The music business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs...There's also a negative side.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The best way to waste your life,... is by taking notes. The easiest way to avoid living is to just watch. Look for the detail. Report. Don't participate.

The unreal is more powerful than the real, because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. because its only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies that last. stone crumbles. wood rots. people, well, they die. but things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on.

If death meant just leaving the stage long enough to change costume and come back as a new character...Would you slow down? Or speed up?”

People have to really suffer before they can risk doing what they love.

We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.

We are not special. We are not crap or trash, either. We just are. We just are, and what happens just happens.

You have a choice. Live or die. Every breath is a choice. Every minute is a choice. To be or not to be.

I just don't want to die without a few scars

The only way to find true happiness is to risk being completely cut open.

People can life their whole lives thinking they know exactly who they are. But one day they can wake up and look in the mirror, and not recognize the person staring back at them.

Born To Be Wild reviews
This isn’t meant to be some sad, tragic story about the perfect, pretty, popular girl who isn’t understood and is alone on the ‘inside’. She was perfectly happy with the way she was. At least, until he came back. AU Trory set in Chilton.
