Author has written 16 stories for Digimon.
Hi, I'm known as either jippy or kandi. Both names are derived from my actual first and middle names. You can call me either, I don't mind which.
I have a Tumblr that is basically my Sorato fansite with analyses, translations, etc.:
Ah, heck, just go here:
I like Digimon. Well, a particular character in Digimon: Yamato Ishida.
The only Digimon coupling I support is Sorato. Best canon relationship ever. And if you don't "get" them, you're missing out on an awesome relationship. :)
I also like Taito/Yamachi (I have over 100 doujinshi of this pairing *cough*). I don't actually "ship" them, though - because, in my opinion, they're unrealistic and wouldn't actually work. I also find Takari deathly boring, and Taiora . . . well . . . honestly? The Taiora "romance" was exaggerated in the English dub. Taichi and Sora are best friends. And that's a lovely friendship that never would have worked out romantically - it would've been an absolute disaster if they were to ever date (as they were constantly fighting even when they weren't dating!). But I digress.
As is obvious, Yamato is my favourite character. My second favourite, though a distant distant distant second, is probably Taichi. I'm a fan of Sora, too. And the rest of the 01 cast. But I half like/dislike the entire cast of 02. Ha. Iori, Miyako, Ken and Daisuke all annoy me at times . . . as do Hikari and Takeru. Hmm.
I also like the family dynamics of Yamato and his parents. So, basically . . . I am a fan of Yamato/Sora romance (this includes friendship), Yamato/Taichi friendship, Hiroaki/Yamato father-son bonding, and Natsuko/Yamato mother-son bonding. Yay. (I'm also a fan of Taichi/Sora friendship.) I really love canon Digimon. :)
And because Yamato rocks, here's a translation of his official 01 Toei Animation profile:
"A cool boy who excels in both academics and sports. His parents divorced three years ago and he now lives with his father. He can be very serious and has a strong sense of responsibility, so is sometimes overly cautious in exploring the Digital World. Because of this, he often butts heads with the more impulsive Taichi. He's quite overprotective of his younger brother Takeru Takaishi, who lives with their mother. His talent is the harmonica."
I sometimes write Sorato drabbles. But mostly I maintain a. Go check it out. :)
Updated my profile a bit, including the astrology stuff below, because I found confirmation for two of the Chosens' signs since then. And yes, it made me ridiculously happy to know that I was right and to have my suspicions validated. :)
Digimon creator and series director Hiroyuki Kakudou denies that the Chosen Children were based on astrology, except for Miyako. He confirms that Miyako is the only Chosen Child to be assigned a Sun sign, and he also refutes the idea that Sora has a birthday. I admit, I would've liked him to confirm that the Chosen Children were based on signs, but his confirmation that Sora's "birthday" in Our War Game! isn't canon is almost as good. If you've read my bio before the latest update, you'll know that I've never accepted Sora's birthday in the movie as canon. :P (Kakudou also makes a distinction between the TV staff and the movie staff - he clearly thinks the TV staff, his team, are "better". :P)
But I still believe the Chosen Children were based on Sun signs.
So, do I think Kakudou's lying? Nope. I think Kakudou believes that the Chosen Children weren't based on the Sun signs. I don't think he's knowledgeable in the area of Western astrology, so he wouldn't know that his writers were ripping off the zodiac right in front of his eyes. So who do I think is mostly responsible for the astrological influences?
Digimon Adventure/02 writer Hiro Masaki.
Hiro Masaki wrote more episodes than anyone for both 01 and 02 (yes, he wrote more episodes than the head writers!), he co-wrote the Digimon Adventure novelisation with Kakudou, and he wrote quite a few of the Digimon Adventure drama CDs. I think he's Kakudou's favourite writer, to be honest. But why do I think he was part of the team behind the astrology influences?
- Masaki wrote 01 episodes 27 and 28. It was in these episodes that the puzzle/key to the gateway are discussed, with the Lion (Leo implication with Leomon), Archer (Sagittarius implication), Monkey. The puzzle was made with an obvious astrology influence.
- Masaki wrote 02 episode 25 where Miyako is revealed as a Gemini.
- Masaki wrote Armour Evolution to the Unknown where it's implied Takeru is a Sagittarius.
- Masaki did NOT write Our War Game! and therefore Sora is NOT a Pisces or Aries. The confusion over when the movie takes place exactly (at the beginning of March, making Sora a Pisces - or the end of March, making Sora an Aries) should tell you that Sora's mentioned "birthday" was always going to mean absolute shit. And Kakudou completely disregards Sora's birthday in it.
But do I think Masaki was in on it by himself? No. Masaki had a lot of influence in the writers room, clearly, but I'm certain he was being "backed up" by other people in higher positions.
I'm sure you've read that the creator of the Digimon concept is Akiyoshi Hongo. But no one can find information on this individual. This has led to very solid speculation that Akiyoshi Hongo is a pseudonym created by Bandai for a group of people responsible for the creation and development of the Digimon franchise:
Aki Maita, Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru and Takeishi Hongo.
Maita is the creator of the Tamagotchi, Hongo is the director of marketing for Bandai, and Nakatsuru is also a Toei Animation designer who designed all the 01 and 02 Chosen Children.
What's important here is that Nakatsuru designed the characters - and some of the characters' designs are astrologically influenced.
I also asked Kakudou who designed the Crests (because I see astrology influences in them as well), and he told me it was either Bandai or WiZ. Well. I think it was Bandai, and I think it was at least one of the trio who make up Akiyoshi Hongo - I am betting on Nakatsuru.
Hiro Masaki, I believe, is also a Sorato writer (I've determined this through analysing his episodes) - and I really think he also had enough influence on Kakudou to have an actual say in the canon couples of Digimon. Why? Because Yamato/Sora and Ken/Miyako are all compatible, astrology-wise. I really don't think that's a coincidence.
It is my belief, with 100 per cent confidence, that the 01 and 02 Chosen were each based on an individual Sun sign (with no Chosen sharing the same sign). I heavily suspect this to be true, with Japan's apparent obsession with Sun signs (and blood types) backing me up. Lots of anime base their characters on signs, such as Gravitation, One Piece, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors, etc. It's a long list. What is with this obsession with Sun signs and blood types? Well, it's the same as Western society's views on astrology. I'm sure you've all heard the question "what's your sign?". But what are people really asking about when they ask you that? Your personality. How compatible you are with someone else's personality. In Japan, it's the same thing. They even take it one step further and have an obsession with blood types, too - which works just like astrology in that it's supposed to tell you a person's personality just by their blood type. So when an anime character is given a Sun sign and a blood type, it's supposed to tell you what their personalities are.
Proposed Fact: Some of the Digimon Adventure staff drew influences from Western astrology and the 01 and 02 Chosen Child were created and fleshed out with specific Sun signs in mind. (In other words: they ripped off the entire zodiac.) Digimon actually goes pretty in-depth with the astrology influences, which is why it was so easy for me to see what character was based on what Sun sign. (I also have over 13 years' of knowledge on the subject of Sun sign astrology.) It's just really obvious to me that when some people in the Digimon team were creating the concepts of the characters - their character designs, personalities, traits, interests, crests, and even how they interact and relate to each other and grow throughout the series - one specific Sun sign was used as a basis for each character. And, therefore, the characters "are" those Sun signs - and obviously so. You would never, for example, think Taichi was a Scorpio. No, that's beyond ridiculous. He's as Aries as they come.
This method of basing characters on Sun signs is used by a lot of anime creators - as well as those in Western society. (Harry Potter, anyone? Although Rowling's knowledge is pretty . . . abysmal. She still gets the very basics right for her characters, though.) Sun sign astrology, after all, is popular - and it's certainly an easy way to create twelve characters with twelve unique personalities, which is what the Digimon series wanted (although seven and then eight initially, of course). How the characters interact and relate to each other are also really easy to establish and handle when you look at it from the point of view of what sign is interacting with what sign - and therefore how each sign (character) would act accordingly.
So, I'm going to state the sign and month, along with the Chosen I believe to be a representation of said sign. I believe people in the Digimon team decided to base each character on each of the respective signs (as listed below), when creating the characters for the television series. Do I believe these are therefore the characters' actual Sun signs? Well, yes. That's the whole point. Sun signs are your personalities, and are therefore their personalities. The Chosen Children are all personifications of a particular Sun sign. Taichi is an Aries. Sora is a Scorpio. Yamato is a Pisces. Look up the signs yourself and see. I've believed the characters are the following signs since 2003.
Twelve Chosen Children and twelve zodiac signs. Coincidence? I think not.
Aries - April - Taichi
Taurus - May - Hikari
Gemini - June - Miyako (*Note: Miyako is confirmed as a Gemini in the Japanese series - and no, this didn't require her to have a birth date that doesn't exist and doesn't need to exist. Her sister says in episode 25 of 02 that Miyako is a Gemini with blood type AB - both of which are statements about her personality. And years before knowing this, which I just found out in 2013, I had already deemed Miyako a Gemini just by analysing her character. Take that as you will. If you're smart, you'll take it as me knowing my stuff when it comes to Sun sign astrology. I WAS RIGHT. :P)
Cancer - July - Mimi
Leo - August - Daisuke
Virgo - September - Jou
Libra - October - Ken
Scorpio - November - Sora
Sagittarius - December - Takeru (*Note: In an official Japanese Digimon drama CD, Daisuke uses Takeru's digimental to evolve his digimon to Sagittarimon, "the Greatest Hope on Earth". This isn't as strong a confirmation as Miyako's, but it's pretty damn convincing, don't you think? And as with Miyako, I had already deemed Takeru a Sagittarius years before I found this out, which was in 2009. SO I WAS RIGHT. AGAIN. :P)
Capricorn - January - Iori
Aquarius - February - Koushirou
Pisces - March - Yamato
Break them up into elements, and you will find similarities between the three specific Chosens, as you would between the specific element. The elements are Fire, Air, Earth and Water.
Fire - Taichi, Daisuke and Takeru. (OPTIMISM.)
Air - Miyako, Ken and Koushirou. (INTELLIGENCE.)
Earth - Hikari, Jou and Iori. (WISDOM.)
Water - Mimi, Sora and Yamato. (EMOTIONS.)
And just an interesting tidbit: the canon couples are Yamato and Sora, and Ken and Miyako. Traditionally, the best zodiac couples are those within their own elements. The Air signs are best with the other Air signs, the Water signs are best with the other Water signs, and you get the idea. So. Ken and Miyako? Libra and Gemini. Both Air signs. Yamato and Sora? Pisces and Scorpio. Both Water signs. (Takeru is a Fire sign, Hikari an Earth sign. Not the same element. Toei didn't put them together.)
Pisces and Sagittarius are both ruled by the planet Jupiter (planet of philosophy). Yamato and Takeru are brothers.
Aries and Scorpio are both ruled by the planet Mars (planet of aggression, activity, sports, masculinity). Taichi and Sora are best friends.
Aries is the beginning of the zodiac, Pisces is the end of the zodiac. These two are as opposite as you can get, which causes conflict. Taichi and Yamato are opposites.
I just don't believe in coincidence after coincidence after coincidence. Hiro Masaki, Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, and perhaps more people at Toei Animation - responsible for the rough drafts of the Chosen Children and steering the characters to be a certain way (ie., the writers) - based all of them on the Western zodiac. And if they didn't? Well, then real astrology forces are at work, giving the Chosen Children actual Sun signs . . . which is freaking ridiculous.
And at the very least, I seem to be reading Hiro Masaki's mind. :P
