![]() Here's a few things about me, in case anyone cares. I am a ladyperson. My nickname is Basia Orci, which, in Latin, means "kisses of Orcus." Orcus is the Roman god of the underworld, death, etc. So, you could say that my name means "kisses of death," which is actually awfully morbid, but it appeals to the dramatic, darker side of me. I derived the name from some poems by Catullus, a famous Roman poet. In his fifth poem (Catullus 5), the romantic quality of his work impressed me when he wrote, "da mi basia mille, deinde centum, dein mille altera, dein secunda centum, deinde usque altera mille, deinde centum. dein, cum milia multa fecerimus, conturbabimus illa, ne scimus, aut ne quis malus invidere possit, cum tantum sciat esse basiorum." This means literally, "give to me a thousand kisses, then one hundred, then another thousand, then a second hundred, then immediately another thousand, then one hundred. Then, when we will have made many thousands, we will stir those up, so that we may not know, or so that any evil man may not be able to envy, when he knows that the number of kisses is so great." So, the "basia" in my name is a tribute to that poem. Ironically, the woman he was writing about cheated on him. Multiple times. The second part of my name is derived from his third poem (Catullus 3), in which the poet laments the death of his girlfriend's sparrow (yes, the same girlfriend that he wrote the fifth poem about). Catullus writes about the "passer," the sparrow, "qui nunc it per iter tenebricosum illuc, unde negant redire quemquam. at vobis male sit, malae tenebrae Orci, quae omnia bella devoratis: tam bellum mihi passerem abstulistis!" This means "who now goes through the gloomy journey to that place, from where they deny that anyone returns. But may it go badly for you, evil shadows of Orcus, you who devour all beautiful things: you have taken away from me so beautiful a sparrow!" And that's where I got the second part of my name. Basia Orci. Kisses of Orcus. And that's where I got my name from. But enough about Latin. I'm sure it bores you. I am into quite a few fandoms. I enjoy reading quite a lot, and I'm not too picky about what category the fic is in, as long as it is written well. Currently, I am into Harry Potter, Torchwood, Doctor Who, Merlin, Star Trek, The Dark Knight, Bones, Criminal Minds, the Mentalist, Burn Notice, Code Geass, the Dresden Files, Stargate (SG-1 and Atlantis), Legend of Zelda, Lord of the Rings, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy VII, Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, Star Wars, and some other ones. I am extremely fond of crossovers. I hate romantic comedies, I love angst, I love slash, I hate unecessary humor, I hate plotless stories, I hate cliched stories, I really hate original characters and Mary Sues, I hate people who claim their character is not a Mary Sue when it really is one, I love dark fics, I love action and violence, I love symbolism and imagery and other literary devices, I hate bad grammar, and I hate bad spelling. But surely no one has read this far into my profile. I'm sure I lost you at the Latin poetry bit. Basia Orci |
