![]() Author has written 1 story for Lord of the Rings. Fandoms: Lord of the Rings, always, since 1989, strictly bookverse; Harry Potter, Pride and Prejudice, the Avengers, The Matrix, Firefly. I don't write much and publish even less (there is one tiny short story up right now), but I add favorites, and whatever value in this account is its collection of stories and authors. There are different standards for different fandoms. The Avengers are comic based blockbuster. As long as there is some of Joss Whedon's spark in dialog imitated, I'll love it, I am easy to please. Same for Firefly, though hardly ever anybody does it justice: too many characters, I guess, too much relies on pure visual chemistry. The Matrix is like a disease, it is a virus in my blood, if the writing resonates with it, great. I'll love it. Harry Potter is a difficult symphony; theoretically, I am not too invested and not too picky. Practically, since I am not too invested, most of fan fiction just doesn't work for me. Pride and Prejudice is, after all, a love story. The protagonist is a bit difficult - an introverted, emotionally blind or blunt man of action AND honor - I guess every attached female in P&P fandom believes their partner to be just like that, I know I do, and the heroine is everyones MarySue, and I am not terribly picky. I would even read and like wild sex scenes. Now, Lord of the Rings is pure gold. It is hard to get it right. It is nearly impossible to sustain the magical tone of honor, history, virtue, grace; character assassination should be a punishable crime. Like everyone, I have my favorites (Faramir, with Aragorn the Strider a second), but unlike previous Fandoms, their presence make me much more picky, not less. |
