Hello! / Szia!
Basic facts: I'm Hungarian, female, was born in the spring of 1990, and go by the name of Wings, Wings90, EmeraldWings90, Smaragd, WingsSmaragd. I'm more of a reader, unfortunately, and less of a writer, even though I have countless fanfic ideas in several fandoms, and even started some of them. I have only started posting one story yet, but it's stalled years ago. The rest of my posts are translations from English to Hungarian, all in the Stargate SG-1 fandom. That was my first and greatest obsession in the fanfic world, but I've expanded my interests since then.
Some general fanfic-reading preferences:
With regards to shipping: I mostly prefer Gen fics, or at least fics which have plenty of action and drama next to romance (though I do read fluff sometimes). That said, I'm very open-minded, I don't have a "one true pairing" anywhere. Instead, I have a "one true character" in every fandom, and I only read fics about them. I don't really care who they're shipped with, as long as it's not too extreme. But if I have to choose, I usually prefer the canon ships. With slash, I used to not want to touch it with a ten-foot pole, but I'm more open-minded about it now. If it's canon, it's completely all right, if not, I need a good reason. Somehow, it's fandom-specific for me where I feel it appropriate. But this is just the general tendency - and I think I'm becoming more open-minded all the time. I've noticed that in my newer fandoms I stick to canon pairings less and can go with expanding on bromace quite often. Still, Gen fics or fics where the pairing is secondary to the plot are the best.
With regards to length and themes: I love long (even extremely long) stories with plenty of plot, where the good guys have to struggle a lot but are victorious in the end. I used to prefer characters that were pure good exclusively, but now I'm very much a redemption fan - if the hero has a bit of a dark side they need to defeat before saving the world, well, that just makes it more interesting. Very short and very dark stories are fun, too - or very short and very fluffy ones. I can't take too much of those things at the same time, though I can handle a lot of darkness if there's light at the end of the tunnel.
These are my fandoms - I'm constantly changing which one I'm more active in as I discover new ones or return to old ones depending on my mood.
I only started watching regularly in 2005, shortly after the beginning of season 7 on Hungarian television, but I quickly downloaded the rest (and gave my English skills quite a boost watching all of it with eng subtitles). For years, this was my only focus, it was the longest time I spent on one fandom. Specifically, my obsession is one Dr. Daniel Jackson, archaeologist and linguist extraordinaire. I especially love anything connected to Ascension. I want Jack and Sam to be together, in fact I think they have been since the end of Season 8, but I only read Daniel-centric fics (or at least team fics in which he has a big role) so I don't read much about them. I hated Vala at first but she grew on me eventually as her initially negative effect on Daniel gradually became positive, so I basically became a DV shipper. Pip (Danny'sGirlSG1) and Cleo the Muse had a hand in that, too. However, as I said, I'm open-minded about pairings - at least partially thanks to MaureenT who writes the best Daniel-centric and Daniel/Sam fics ever. I don't think slash is good in this fandom, though I've made some exceptions for some fics by writers I love.
I'm putting this as second because it's part of my only published fanfic, but I have to admit it's not a major fandom of mine - it just goes really well with Stargate. I remember watching an episode or two back when I was little, but the only things I remembered were swords and lightning, and the fact my parents didn't want me watching it. I downloaded the series after I saw the original movie and read a Daniel-as-an-Immortal fic (by Shannon K - it featured Methos, too). I did not watch all the episodes, just most of season 1, every Methos episode and a few more that I heard were of greater importance to the storyline. My interest here is Methos-centric - there aren't that many fics, but I read a few really good ones about him. Again, redemption theme - the Four Horsemen and all... And this is a fandom which does allow for slash, in my opinion - you live that long, there's not much you don't try, is there?
I always liked the movies a lot, watched them every time they were on TV, but the true love came with Knights of the Old Republic in 2003 - and after playing the sequel, too, I concluded that KotOR II is the best game ever. This opinion still stands (in spite of WoW). I have dowloaded all the books and got busy on reading the ones featuring Luke, though I still haven't gotten through all of them. I also played a bit of Jedi Knight, Jedi Academy and Battlefront. SW is probably the only fandom where I have multiple favorite characters, likely because of its vastness. My main focus for reading is Luke Skywalker - I especially like Luke & Vader father&son fics, and Luke/Mara ships, too - but I could go on listing themes forever, there's so many. Falling and redemption is definitely a big one here - it's a real pity there aren't many more Dark Empire fics. Here I'm also into Time Travel stories, as Anakin and Luke are way too funny together. I'd also love to see an older, Grand Master Luke telling off the Council... but enough about that. I also read some Obi-Wan Kenobi fics, as I think he's the best in the prequel trilogy. Actually, I love Yoda, too, but I really can't imagine fics about him... My third character focus is Revan - male or female, I've played and read both. There are several pretty awesome KotOR novelizations here. Maybe it's weird, but I haven't read anything about the Exile, even though KotOR II is my favorite - but I loved playing because I made her completely me (I was really very emotionally invested in the whole thing while playing) and maybe that's why I can't stand other people's interpretations of her. Unlike Revan, I can't even imagine a male Exile. Of course, my love of KotOR has a lot to do with my love of redemption. Out of curiosity, I tried playing Dark Side a few times, but I couldn't do it - it was an awful feeling, so I returned to playing pure good (Kreia frustrated the hell out of me when no matter what I did, she didn't approve), but both characters hold a great degree of redemption in them by themselves. So, basically, it's Luke, Revan and Obi-Wan for reading, and if shipping, then mostly canon shipping (Luke/Mara, LSM!Revan/Bastila, LSF!Revan/Carth, but I'm still open-minded, and I was surprised to discover some Obi-Wan/Ventress fics I loved, too). Again, I feel this is a fandom which doesn't allow for slash, or at least not between any of the main characters - and I don't read about the rest anyway.
Got all 4 books for Christmas of 2000... instantly hooked forever. So much so that I couldn't wait for the translation of OotP, so with my then-rudimentary English skills (I was 13) I sat down to read the original in the company of a dictionary. The third time through I translated it aloud for my little brother. I repeated the feat with HBP, but by the time DH was out he knew enough English to read it himself. However, for a long time I read little fanfiction because both the quantity and the quality scared me a lot - some of the pairings make me want to wash my brain out with industrial-strength soap just based on the summary. I started reading a lot after Beedle was published, as by then I developed greater tolerance for sick & scary summaries and better skills for browsing FFNet. And I was just in a HP mood and there wasn't anything else to read. Harry Potter is my one true character, and though I often find non-ship more interesting and prefer the canon ships, I'm not strict about them. Absolutely no slash apart from that tiny instance in canon which wasn't even mentioned in the books really, though, and no weird pairings (Draco/Hermione qualifies as the start of weird). I like Dumbledore, too, so if a fic is bashing him, I quickly stop reading (unless it's otherwise extremely good). Dumbledore-as-a-mentor is maybe my favorite type, but believable Snape-as-a-mentor fics are great, too, as are Time Travels from a badly-ended future to fix everything and believable powerful!Harry fics.
I started watching regularly in 2004, around the beginning of season 4, when Cole Turner was a good half-demon, and he quickly became my favorite character. Imagine my outrage when he never got a happy end. It made me really mad how unfair they all were to him after he came back - seriously, the Source thing was not his fault, he was possessed! The whole business made me hate Phoebe a lot. I stayed watching through season 7 even though it continued to make me mad with what they did to Leo, too - why does an angel have to be corrupted, too? - when came a long gap in Hungarian TV and I did not return to watch the last season. Years after I discovered fanfiction, I saw some and got nostalgic for it, watched the first three seasons which I've never seen plus all Cole episodes, and read a summary for season 8 and watched the series finale. I then proceeded to read every Cole-centric fic I could get my hands on, regardess of pairing. I know Phoebe makes him happy so I read ones that gave them a happy ending, too, but frankly, I think he's better off without her. Redemption is again a strong theme here, as is falling - he was born half-human and half-demon, so being raised as a demon could not have been easy, either. No slash here, either - until now I never even thought of the possibility... weird. Maybe it's because demons there seem entirely violence-driven.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel
I was looking for Cole fics and I found a crossover with Angel, by Marcus S. Lazarus - I read it without knowing anything about the Buffyverse (except for seeing the original movie years ago) and it was still awesome, so I knew it would be even better if I watched the series... I was not disappointed. My interest here is completely Angel-centric (and Angelus, too) - I only watched the first three season of Buffy and the few other episodes Angel was in, for the rest I only watched a summary. I like the whole Angel gang better, too (though Willow is awesome). I love the redemption theme of Angel, both in the character and in his series - the Buffy gang is entirely too judgmental, somewhat like the Charmed Ones in that regard. Even though I've read a lot of Angel/Buffy fics, because there are many well-written ones, I have to admit I usually don't like her, partially because of defensiveness for Angel (like with Cole and Phoebe). I like Angel/Cordelia a lot better, but sadly there's a lot less of those, especially well-written. But this is an instance where I accept literally any pairing - partly because, hey, soulless vampires... they got the whole no-inhibitions, only-in-anything-for-the-fun-of-it thing going on. Slash here is therefore fully canon, and I like it, too - but not just among the evil ones, either, as shown by Willow/Tara. Bottom line, almost anything can be well-written, whether explained by evilness, shared past experiences, soulmateness, close friendship or I-love-who-I-love-regardless-of-what-they-are. It's quite explicit that with evil vampires, it's everyone with everyone, and it's not much of a stretch to continue from there even after one or both of them turn good, if the circumstances are right. On the good front, though, I have to admit liking Angel/humanDarla as well. And to people bashing Cordelia, I want to remind them that she was not a character in Angel season 4. Cordelia wasn't in season 4, not even for a minute; Jasmine was. And You're Welcome is pretty much the best episode of both series thanks to her.
Yes. Yes, I do watch because Seeley Booth is Angel as human (meaning I like watching David Boreanaz). So sue me; I'm sure I'm not the only one. It's Booth-centric fics here; agent, sniper, soldier, gambling addict, son of an alcoholic, there's plenty of topics here even without a long-unrequited love for his partner, which I also love. I'm not rabid about the pairing here either, though - as long as they stay friends, it's okay, too. But no slash (except for the canon by Angela).
X-Men, Iron Man, Avengers & other Marvel universe
I can't be considered a true fan because I've never read any comics and never even seen the original cartoon - my only exposure is the live action movies and the X-Men: Evolution cartoon. However, it still definitely needs mentioning because I discovered the term "fan fiction" on a Hungarian fansite of that cartoon, and because of the amount of thought I put into making up my own mutant powers. I invented quite a few by myself (even if some of them have been invented before, just without my knowledge), and my final design of me as "Wings" is still my avatar, my name and my first wish if I could wish something for myself. I'm not overpowered, either - I'm proud of my restraint in that regard. I read almost no fanfiction except those few amateurish Hungarian ones which were basically all self-insterts (not that I knew that term back then) and a few about movie Logan/Wolverine. From other Marvel, I used to watch a lot of the old Spider-Man cartoons on TV and I've read a couple of movieverse fics. Never got far enough in reading for any kind of pairing, never mind slash, but I can't imagine it happening. I have seen several other Marvel movies like Daredevil and Fantastic Four, and right now I'm in the process of watching the five movies that are prequel to The Avengers. I've aready seen both Iron Man movies, and though a few weeks ago I did not know anything about him except that he existed, I am now completely hooked and have already started reading fanfics. Tony is awesome and I can't wait to finally see the Avengers.
Update, Nov 2012: During the summer of 2012 (which was the previous time I updated this profile) I watched all Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and since then I've been in total "Avengers-fan" mode. Tony Stark/Iron Man is absolute favorite - I practically read anything Tony-centric or team-centric as long as there is enough Tony in it. In movieverse, Loki is second favorite - again, redemption fan, I can't help but want to heal him. I love Tony/Pepper (Pepperony is a brilliant name) in the movies (though it gets a bit boring after a while in fanfic, I think), and I've read a wonderful Loki/Jane fic by Alydia Rackham, but I read plenty of slash here. Tony's a playboy, it's quite possible to pair him with literally anyone. It just fits the character. Loki is a shapeshifter for whom mpreg is canon, so... yeah. Norse mythology is quite insane and sick a lot of the time. I'm not saying I'll read anything, but I do understand why people will write anything here. Next, I adored Tony and Bruce's interaction in the movie, so Science Bros fics are great, too - but so are general team fics. I also started downloading and reading Iron Man comics, and some Avengers as well which are relevant to Iron Man storylines. It's an unbelievably huge multiverse of stories - and I'm not even trying to go in order. So far I've read the very beginning, the Demon in a Bottle storyline, the original formation of the Avengers, Avengers Disassembled, the living armor storyline, Extremis, Execute Program, bits of Civil War, Secret Invasion and Dark Reign - though I can barely find my way around those, they're so huge all-Marvel events - World's Most Wanted, Stark Disassembled and Stark Resilient. I'm sure I've left stuff out - I can barely remember what I've got and what I've read, I just look stuff up when I hear about it from fanfics. I am reading every fanfic that's Extremis-related, Civil War-related or post-Civil War fix-it/reconciliation. Meaning, of course, that I am reading a lot of Steve & Tony fics, too, and I love them. They have quite a unique relationship in the comics, it's totally a love-hate bromance, which is very easy to turn into slash in fanfic. Though I think it's a pity that not many people write good Gen fics about this.
Again, it was this summer that I watched both the Robert Downey Jr. movies and the BBC Sherlock series, and I absolutely love them both. I've also seen some of the old Jeremy Brett TV series before, and I'm in the process of reading Arthur Conan Doyle's novels and short stories, though it's going slowly right now because I have plenty of other stuff to do. I did read a few fanfics for both the BBC and the RDJ versions, though not that much. Most fanfics seem to ignore the fact that Holmes is supposed to be a virgin and stays that way - though I can certainly understand liking Irene Adler or wanting to deepen the already extremely strong bond between Holmes and Watson. Yes, that subtext is very much there, but somehow I prefer leaving it as subtext and one-sided subconscious attachment - especially in the Victorian era, because RDJ-Holmes's jealously of Mary is just great to watch, and so is the fact that he does support his friend in the end.
(It has to be said that after seeing Robert Downey Jr. as both Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes the same month I have started downloading all his other movies as well. By now I've seen over a dozen, and I'm pretty sure I've watched every RDJ-interview on YouTube. It's an obsession and it seems it will go on for some time. I've liked actors before but I've never known so much about them and never went looking for all of their films. He is brilliant both as a person and as an actor. Chaplin should totally have gotten that Oscar, I loved Tropic Thunder even though I usually hate anything involving Ben Stiller, Less Than Zero, Two Girs and a Guy and The Singing Detective are chilling performances, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is just hilarious... I could go on.)
Superman & other DC universe
I need to make some of the same comments here as for Marvel - can't be considered a true fan because I never read the comics, but I have been more deeply involved here in fanfiction. I watched Lois & Clark on TV and wrote a bit of fanfiction for it in my head before I knew there was such a thing, so when I stumbled upon a L&C fic while reading for other fandoms years later, it made me nostalgic. I downloaded the series, watched it in English and read an enormous amount of fanfiction for it, mostly on other sites. This lead me to watching Superman Returns, which in turn made me watch the first two movies with Christopher Reeve and provided more fanfic-reading material. I've also read a lot which start the story from the beginning, without strong ties to other retellings. Of course, it's Clark focus completely here, but I'm not even sure if there were any alternate pairings that I read - maybe a few times, but I can't recall right now. All this made me rewatch Justice League on YouTube, too, which I used to like a lot on TV, and read some fics for that. I like the new Batman films as well but I have seen the old ones, too. I even read some Clark & Bruce fics, though they were mostly set in unidentifiable generic universe or movieverse. I did watch a bit of Smallville - again, there was a period when I watched it on TV, around season 3 or 4, but then the gap came and I did not start watching again when it restarted. After my L&C period I tried to catch up, but there was just too much of it, too complicated without watching it all even though I tried to select key episodes - and anyway, I don't like it when Clark's that angsty, it doesn't suit him. I did watch a lot of Season 8, though. It really is good, but I don't have the will to watch from start to finish when I have things I like more that I left unfinished, too. I'm sure I have seen some other DC movies but I can't think of any right now, and I'm still planning to watch Green Lantern, for example.
Phantom of the Opera
Had the DVD of the 2004 lent to me by a friend, watched it, loved it, listened to the original cast recording, got the original Leroux book and the Susan Kay book, went to the theater... and read a lot of fics. This is the only purely romance story that grabbed my attention like this for so long - I'm not sure why. Maybe because it's not purely romance but also music (I sing in a choir), insane genius, murder and redemption. And I just wanted some kind of happy end for poor, unfortunate Erik - whether with Christine, someone else, or just a friend. I really did read a lot of many varieties - some even involving time travel, self-instert or present-day AU, and they were good, too. There were a couple of brilliant ones that said Erik really is the fallen Angel of Music.
You'll never guess how I got here: from Phantom of the Opera. An unfinished and experimental fic featured Castiel in the form of a messenger, the writer apologizing for the semi-hidden crossover/cameo, and so I Googled him to find out where he came from. I have heard before that Supernatural was good but I didn't have a good enough reason to start watching - I did now. In my impatience, though, I only started watching from season 4, Castiel's appearance - and only got to the first few episodes of season 5 when I ran out of episodes to watch, as they had not aired yet. I was not willing to download and watch week by week - Stargate SG-1 is the only series I ever did that for - so I stopped there, but I'm planning to start again sometime. I did read some Castiel fics (as well as Castiel & Dean-centric ones), though my understanding of the fandom is still way too limited.
Very brief update, Nov 2014: I started watching more about a year ago, and in proper chronological order half a year ago; I still haven't seen everything, but I have watched season 9 as it aired and I am watching season 10 as it airs so far, too. At first I really thought I loved Sam, Dean and Cas equally, but since then I have definitely developed into a Sam girl. A proud, protective, slightly bitter Sam girl. He is just amazing. It floors me how good he is, and that he's this good with that taint and that destiny hanging over him his whole life is incredible.
I had watched when I was little - but I have to admit, I did not remember much, except that I liked it (and the names and appearance of most of the good guys). In addition, they stopped showing it in Hungary just after Future Trunks arrived, so I missed a lot anyway. I was reminded by 9gag... I've got almost all of it on my computer now, both in English and in Japanese. I prefer the latter, actually, mostly because of the often absurdly over-the-top English dub - it's basically a rewrite, not a translation, and that makes me angry. Son Goku is my favorite - I hate it when people portray him as completely stupid, because he's clearly not - and this is one case where I really, really don't like the canon pairing. Actually, my main problem is that I hate all women in the entire universe (with the possible exception of future Bulma - growing old and raising a child alone in a postapocalyptic world did her good). I do read some Goku/Chichi but only because they can be well-written. It really depends on the interpretation and how much extra emotion you assume behind the scenes of the series. However, I prefer it if romance is in the background only, like in the show itself. Or, I have to admit, slash fits well with this fandom. There's quite a lot of logic in saying that Saiyans are an alien race and should not even be paired with humans at all, plus it seems like there never had been many Saiyan women anyway - so take that logic wherever you want it. Another thing I have to mention is the possible falling/redemption storyline stemming from Kakarotto taking Goku over as the dominant personality - it's a very intriguing basis for a story, even if it needs a very good explanation for what could possibly overcome Goku's pure heart like that. Oh, and I also like Bardock a lot - and liked him before his little time-traveling adventure, too.
I saw a little bit of The Next Generation on TV and liked it, but somehow never got into it - I was already watching other stuff, didn't have enough time and so on. I didn't have the means to download stuff back then either. However, when I saw Star Trek 2009 on TV, I loved it so much I had to rewatch it immediately in English, then I watched the first few episodes of the original series and all the movies with the orignial cast so I could understand the full implications of the time travel AU. I quickly became a Spock fan and read fics about him, or him and Kirk, but similarly to Supernatural, my knowledge of the fandom is way too limited to fully appreciate it and I'm planning to return to it someday.
Very brief update, Nov 2014: I started watching Doctor Who on 1 March 2013, and finished all of the New series in about three weeks. I adore Nine, but I have to claim Ten as my favorite. (David Tennant, too. He's adorable and great and made me like Hamlet.) Right now, 8x02 is the last ep I'd seen, I'm not currently keeping up cause I'm in Supernatural mode, but since I'm updating briefly, I had to put at least a sentence here cause it is/was a major, major fanfic-reading obsession. I just haven't updated this in way too long. Not gonna go into detail now, though.
There is also some other stuff I like, like Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Artemis Fowl, and Eragon, which I have to mention even though I have never read fanfics for them.
In addition to my love of books, TV series, and movies, I'm also a bit of a PC gamer - though less so nowadays because my computer's getting really old. From tetris and mahjong, Aladdin and Day of the Tentacle, through Caesar III, Pharaoh and RollerCoaster, then Knights of the Old Republic, Enter the Matrix and Syberia, and on to World of Warcraft, I did play a lot, though I know there are a lof of classics I missed out on, too. (Most of them, actually. And I've never held a game consol in my life - it's the mouse&keyboard for me.) But apart from all the Star Wars games, I don't read fanfiction for them. Oh, I miss WoW... And I really want to play The Old Republic... come on, how can circumstances stop me from playing it when I'm such a huge KotOR fan?! *sigh* Never mind... This isn't the place. This is about fanfiction, which I read to heal the void left by the lack of games.
...Okay, I'll stop now. I think I talked enough for the day. Sorry for the long ramble - I hope I managed to express what I meant, and only what I meant, but I'm too lazy right now to check. Feel free to tell me about any mistakes, be it spelling or logical - I'll be grateful.
If you want to, you can find me on too, though I don't know how to draw - but I do have some interesting favorites saved. The same applies to http://www.youtube.com/user/EmeraldWings90 - I do have one SG-1 music video I made, though.
