![]() Author has written 3 stories for Naruto. I write stuff you may find enjoyable. Drop me a review if that's the case. My Narutoverse Guidelines There are a few things in the Narutoverse that have never sat well with me. I'm talking about the vague ambiguity of the level of technology, techniques and character information - you know, the shit keeps us all oh-so delightfully confused. It is because of this, I have decided to write my own guideline of sorts in regards to the shinobi world of Naruto, a guideline which, unless states otherwise, will always be followed to the latter in my stories. 1) Character Stats The data books would have believe that there are eight criterias by which a shinobi's prowess can be gauged: ninjutsu, taijutsu, genjutsu, intelligence, strength, speed, stamina and hand seals. The first are pretty much straightforward: ninjutsu refers to all branches of ninjutsu arts such as ninpou techniques, elemental techniques, fuuinjutsu and of course medical ninjutsu. Taijutsu refers to hand to hand combat, including kenjutsu and all other weapon-based techniques. You know how to goes from there. Now my problem lies with the last two: stamina and hand seals. See, if you go to the Naruto Wiki (I do not care it is a wiki and can be edited by anyone; it is extremely up to date and well maintained), under several characters they will show the stats given to them by Kishimoto. If you click on 'stamina' and 'hand seals', the former will redirect you to chakra, which makes sense as chakra is stamina, more or less, and the later to the page of all hand seals, in which the first sentence it talks about chakra control. I find this really vague and annoying and have therefore changed the gauging system in my stories, which goes as follows: ninjutsu, taijutsu, bukijutsu, genjutsu, intelligence, strength, speed, stamina, chakra and chakra control. This is a more clearer approach. Bukijutsu refers to the use of weapons techniques; this can mean both swords and other common melee weapons in the Naruto world, and other weapons such as the Aburame Clan's insects techniques, the Inuzuka Clan's ninken and so on. Why have I added this? Simple. Taijutsu refers to hand-to-hand combat, that's clear enough. However, it is very much so possible a shinobi would be crap at hand-to-hand, but excellent at using weapons, i.e. Kankurou. He uses puppets as weapons, and does a great job at it, but he would most likely be worth next to nothing without them. The same would likely apply to Temari and Tenten, both whom are weapon experts and likely would not be much of a threat without their weapons. As for the last three changes: though chakra can be converted to stamina, it is not necessarily needed to have stamina in the first place. Look at Lee, yes, he can use chakra through the eight gates, but on the face of it, he can't have that much chakra, can he? Yet, he is one of the toughest characters out there and regularly takes on incredibly tough opponents, who do have access to their chakra and usually have a lot of it (Kisame), and other crazy activities like running 500 laps around Konoha. Rock Lee and several other non-chakra using characters in the series (usually non-shinobi) prove that chakra and stamina are not synonymous. Lastly in my system, 'chakra control', is pretty simple: how ept is a character and controlling their chakra and fine tuning it to specific purposes? The average shinobi/warrior will score around 2.5-3.5 on the chakra control scale; those who are medical ninjutsu users and kinjutsu users will have to have a higher control, ranging from 3.5-4. In most cases, if a character has a high intelligence, chakra control is also likely to be high: e.g. Sakura. Having explained that, the 'chakra' I use in my system refers to the amount of chakra someone has: Chakra Index 0-1: academy students 1-2: genin, chūnin 2-3: elite chūnin, tokubetsu jōnin 3-4: elite jōnin (including ANBU) 4-5: Kage, jinchūriki The general skill index will gauge each criteria 0-5 like this. 0-1: indicates a low to no skill at all and perhaps the barest of comprehension when scored in bukijutsu and genjutsu (think academy students or Naruto/ genjutsu) 1-2: indicates a low to average level of skill and/or basic understanding (genin) 2-3: indicates an average to above average level of skill and/or understanding (chūnin) 3-4: indicates an above average to expert level of skill and/or understanding (tokubetsu jōnin/jōnin) 4-5: indicates expert to master level of skill and/or understanding (elite jōnin/Kage) This is the index for overall skill. Overall Skill Index 0-10: academy students, rōnin and most non-shinobi fodder. They are weak individually, but may pose a threat in the dozens. 10-15: genin with average skill sets will be in this category. 15-20: talented genin with a lot of potential, usually with some mission experience. 20-25: chūnin who are well-versed in most of basic shinobi combat. 25-30: elite chūnin and tokubetsu jōnin will fit in this category 30-35: jōnin and some ANBU fit will be at this score; they are well-versed in combat, experienced and knowledgeable. e.g. Akimichi Chōza (Ninjutsu: 4.5 Taijutsu: 5 Bukijutsu: 4 Genjutsu: 2.5 Intelligence: 2.5 Strength: 5 Speed: 2 Stamina: 3.5 Chakra: 4 Chakra Control: 3.5 Total: 36.5) 35-40: elite jōnin (ANBU) and Kage-level shinobi, e.g. Kakashi (Ninjutsu: 5 Taijutsu: 4 Bukijutsu: 3.5 Genjutsu: 4 Intelligence: 4.5 Strength: 3.5 Speed: 3.5 Stamina: 3 Chakra: 3.5 Chakra Control: 4.5 Total: 39) 40-45: Kage level, e.g. Jiraiya ( Ninjutsu: 5 Taijutsu: 4.5 Bukijutsu: 3 Genjutsu: 3.5 Intelligence: 4.5 Strength: 4.5 Speed: 4 Stamina: 5 Chakra: 5 Chakra Control: 4 Total: 43) 45-50: Run, e.g. Namikaze Minato (Ninjutsu: 5 Taijutsu: 5 Bukijutsu: 4.5 Genjutsu: 4.5 Intelligence: 5 Strength: 3.5 Speed: 5 Stamina: 4 Chakra: 4 Chakra Control: 4.5 Total: 45) Everyone is free to use this system if they so choose - I doubt I'm the only one that used something like anyway. Template: Ninjutsu: 0 Taijutsu: 0 Bukijutsu: 0 Genjutsu: 0 Intelligence: 0 Strength: 0 Speed: 0 Stamina: 0 Chakra: 0 Chakra Control: 0 Total: 0 XxxX XxxX XxxX 2) Level of Technology and Year The level of technology in the Narutoverse has always been confusing due to the fact there's no actual date given. I've done some research on the matter, you know, nothing complicated, and have come to the conclusion that Naruto either takes place (most realistically) in the 1600s or the 1800s. The reason for this is simple: we know for a fact that Naruto takes place in a world with feudal lords known as daimyou. These feudal lords were around for many years, dating back from the 10th century up until the 19th century. Simply by judging the world on the vague glances we get, I would say the most logical time line would be in the 1600s, also known as the Edo Period (note that this has nothing to do with the kinjutsu Edo Tensei, 'edo' just means 'dirty soil' - a reference to the time of warring states which soiled the earth with blood). Now, there's not a lot you can do with the dates in Naruto fan fiction. It doesn't really mean anything to us authors and readers, but I thought it would be interesting tidbit. Now, moving on to the level of technology, we have so far seen: TVs, cinemas (movie), computers, modern hospitals, casinos, video conference calls between the Daimyō, chainsaws (filler), guns (in the manga) and so on. Obviously, it can be a bit annoying to sort all the possible and impossible pieces of technology available in the Narutoverse, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. For my own stories, I started with what definitely cannot exist in the Narutoverse, these being: The internet, nukes, modern machine guns, airplanes, cars, mobile phones - the list goes on, but if you take a good look, you can see, more or less, what is and what isn't possible in the Narutoverse. What can exist in the Narutoverse, in my stories at least, would be: Pirate-age pistols and rifles with round bullets as seen in One Piece, airships like zepelins and as seen in Avatar: The Last Airbender: example1, example2, example3, radio sets, and so on. I'll come back to update this later. 3) Unnamed Characters It has always annoyed me to no end that Kishimoto just skims over certain characters and never expands on their background. For example, why is Tsunade not called Senju Tsunade? What are Jiraiya's, Orochimaru's and Tenten's lastnames - and what about Sai's and Yamato's real names? Most prominently perhaps, is Konohamaru's father - or lack thereof. Who is he? Is he even alive? I would think, considering Konohamaru is of some significance and that his father or mother (I'm going with father) would be the offspring of the Sandaime, they would at least get a mentioning, even if just in passing? Another thing, what the hell is up with not naming characters of signficance, like the Yondaime Kazekage, Nidaime Mizukage, Sandaime Raikage? It irritates me when a character is introduced without a name giving, it's pet peeve Kishimoto really knows how to irk me with. In all of my stories Konohamaru's father will be Sarutobi Kaen. For example, in Kumogakure Ninja, he died on a mission only a few months before Konohamaru's birth due to a omission of a chūnin staffer who worked in the Hokage Tower. To all readers of Naruto: Potential Realised - here's a spoiler - Konohamaru's dad is alive. 4) Bijū Nature Types and Abilities For future reference, this is likely these are the nature types and special abilities the bijū will possess in my stories. Shūkaku has Magnet Release (Jiton) & Cursed Seals; anyone with a brain knows that Shukaku used Magnet Release to manipulate sand. Those aren't two separate abilities, but more on that later. With regards to the Cursed Seals, Shukaku uses them to torment his hosts. The tattoo on Gaara's forehead is one of his juin and is what caused Gaara to slip into insanity. Matatabi has Scorch Release (Shakuton) & Reanimation of the dead (in keep with Japanese folklore of the Bakeneko); red flames that scorch all too ashes and blue blue flames with the ability to summon the spirit of the dead and reanimate their bodies. Isobu has Water Release & coral, which may or may not be Crystal Release - I know, corals aren't crystals, but they resemble it, and within the context of Kishimoto's stupid logic, coral is as much crystal based as rubber and quicklime are lava based. Either the way, the coral is remarkable durable and malleable. Son Gokū has Lava Releas (Yōton) & green flames (En'en Hōka - Monkey Flame Arson); mythical green fire that can selectively burn targets and at certain temperatures cause drowsiness, genjutsu, souls to die and command abrupt hostile overgrowth in nature. Kokuō has Boil Release (Futton) & unrivalled strength; straightforward steam to power convertion that is theoretically limitless and thus unrivalled. Saiken has Water Release (Suiton) & corrosive alkali; this rather straightforward because it's exactly as we've seen it in the manga. The corrosive alkali can be produced as both a liquid and a gas with varying degrees of lethality and acidity. Chōmei has Storm Release (Ranton) & Scale Powder; I read somewhere once that beetles have an affinity or some sort of connection with unruly weather storms according to Japanese folklore and mythology. I have since endeavoured to try and find out where that comes from but haven't been able to. What I do recall is that it had something to do with the horns of the beetles resembling a lightning rod, thus their supposed connection to storms. Gyūki has Lightning Release/Storm Release & ink; octopi are water creatures, and Gyūki has a strong affiliation with lightning due to his habitat in Lightning Country where Storm Release is a common KKG. It's actually similar to how Shukaku resides in Wind Country where Magnetism Release is a common trait amongst the Kazekage. Gyūki never used Storm Release in the manga, but that's what I'm sticking with. Also, as demonstrated in the manga, his ink has sealing properties similar to Shukaku also. Kurama has Wind Release (Fūton) & negative emotion sensing; this seems straightforward. Twice in the manga has Naruto asked for Kurama to contribute his chakra to a Rasengan and both times they were Wind Release. I toyed with the thought that perhaps Kurama had Scorch Release or Blaze Release (as foxes in Japanese folklore and mythology have an affinity for fire) but was unable to use it because he was split in two like Mū the Nidaime Tsuchikage was incapable of using Dust Release (Jinton) when split in two. There is no evidence of Kurama possessing such a power however. 5) The Duality of Magnet Release I'm keeping this short. The manga has demonstrated numerous variations of one Kekkai Genkai before, mostly notably with Lava Release, under which banner are actual lava, quicklime and rubber. The manga has demonstrated this is also the case with Magnet Release, as evidenced by Shukaku, Third Kazekage (TKK), Rasa (FKK), Gaara and Toroi. All but the last use a form of magnetism that is called diamagnetism whereas Toroi uses a form of magnetism called paramagnetism. That might sound a little complicated, but it's not. The distinction between the two is simple. Paramagnetism involves magnetising a magnet material. Diamagnetism involves the magnetising of a material that is not inherently like magnetic, e.g. gold dust and sand. To keep it simpler still, while both versions involve magnetising chakra, the difference is what they do with it. Toroi magnetising chakra using the power of attraction in order to use his giant shuriken for lethal purposes. Shukaku, TTK, Rasa and Gaara all magnetise their chakra to leviate their respective material of choice for the purposes of combat, i.e. they use the power of repulsion to move sand and gold dust. Aside from demonstrating identical techniques by Shukaku, Rasa and Gaara, Kishimoto gave us more obvious differentiator: dark rimmed eyes. This is particularly interesting because dark rimmed eyes are famously associated with tanuki in Japanese folklore. Shukaku is tanuki, his eyes are naturally dark-rimmed. Gaara, its jinchūriki, also has perpetually dark rimmed eyes, which we later learned to be the case due to some form of Will Manifestation by his mother Karura (not so unlike Madara/Black Zetsu) that granted Gaara his permanent Ultimate Defence. Rasa is the clearest indicator of the connection between diamagnetism and dark rimmed eyes because he is a human with no connection to Shukaku and his eyes gained dark rims when he used his Magnet Release, which is identical to his son. We never saw the TTK use Magnet Release whilst alive, but if we did, then based on the evidence he would also gain dark rims around his eyes when using his Magnet Release to move (repulse) his Iron Sand. My Projects NARUTO: Potential Realised Information The whole point of this fan fiction is to show how Naruto might have developed under different circumstances. What if he was promoted to chunin in the aftermath of the Chunin Exams finals and the invasion, like many of thought he ought have? This is the story of a Naruto who, fundamentally, remains the same personality-wise, but gains wisdom and experience over the years in his career as a real, professional shinobi of Konoha. At the beginning of the story, Naruto's still a rookie chunin with only a few knots on his belt in terms of accomplishments. Like canon Naruto, he's fought Zabuza, he fought and defeated Haku, Neji and Gaara, but with all those accomplishments he had a great deal of back up. Kakashi, Sasuke, Jiraiya and the Kyubi were all there to help him accomplish these feats. I'm aiming to write a realistically developing Naruto who becomes his own man in this story, as he traverses the ranks and accumulates and reputation that strikes fear and awe in others. His journey is that of self-discovery; it is not an easy journey.
