1. Of Sheep and Battle Chicken - Link
One of, if not the best piece of fanfiction I have ever read. Of Sheep and Battle Chicken, despite the absurdity of its name is realistic, dark, gritty, compelling, action-packed, well-written and bombastic in every way it needs to be. A complete retelling of the story of the Mass Effect trilogy (with one completed sequel and one on-going sequel) through the lens of a former military vet that completely revitalizes every aspect of the story in ways you cannot imagine. If you think you know how this story will go because you played the games, think again. There will always be at least one major change that blindsides you with how awesome it is.
2. Limpieza de Sangre - Link
The most heartbreaking piece of fanfiction I have ever read, hands down. This story absolutely destroyed me, to the point of numbly focusing on its unexpected ending for the better part of two days. I reached out to friends who despise fanfiction to commiserate with them on the emotional effect this story had on me. A Harry Potter AU set after the events of the graveyard, focusing on the most interesting depiction of the Harry-Voldemort relationship that has ever been put to print with a female Voldemort. I cannot recommend this story to you enough, but I must also warn you; If you invest yourself in the relationship between Emily and Harry in any way, do not let the story convince you it's going to have a happy ending.
3. One Good Turn Deserves Another - Link
Written in the early days of RWBY before the main plot of the show had even been revealed by the undisputed master of RWBY fanfiction, Coeur Al'Aran, this is, for my money, the best written piece of Knightshade on the market. Not content to just depict an unorthodox ship in a blindingly well-written light, the author went a step further and wrote a compelling, nail-biting, suspenseful epic filled with tragedy, success, angst, joy and an excellent depiction of the relationship between Yang and Ruby while he was at it. Even now, knowing perfectly well what actually happened to all these characters in the show, the last few chapters of this story will truly make you believe that the tragedy is inescapable.
4. Delenda Est - Link
The original fanfiction that captivated and dominated my attention, this is probably still my favorite fanfiction of all time, if for no other reason than nostalgia. To this day, I still reread it once a year, every year. It remains, without a doubt, the best written piece of Harry/Bellatrix fanfiction ever (do not come at me with Wind Shear, it is ~not~ a Harry/Bellatrix story), telling the tale of a time travelling Harry Potter who finds himself in the midst of the first war against Voldemort, unwillingly aided by the daughter of House Black. Even if the very notion of this ship turns you off or confuses you, I urge you to give this one a try. You won't regret it.
