To all the O's fans out there, today is a bittersweet day as homegrown talent Mike Mussina has retired from baseball. Known affectionately to Oriole fans as Moose, he will be missed around baseball and the Orioles organization. Farewell Moose... Taken from the Orioles website is information confirming Mike's bittersweet exit from the game. NEW YORK -- Having attempted to keep a secret close to the vest for an entire year, Mike Mussina opened the first afternoon of his post-baseball life by unburdening himself of a confession. The Yankees right-hander said that he knew all along that 2008 would be his final Major League season, having reached the decision to walk away from the game in January, looking to complete what would be his 18th and final tour around the American League. The fact that he was able to walk away on top, less than two months after completing the first 20-win season of his career, just made his fond farewell all the more sweeter. "I don't think there was ever a point where I looked around and said, 'You know what? I'm going to change my mind,'" Mussina said Thursday in a conference call to discuss his retirement. "I just felt so good about the season, the way it was going, and enjoying it and not getting caught up in the bad times. It was like the last year of high school. You know it's going to end, and you just enjoy the ride." Mussina said he kept the secret from reporters, teammates and even front-office executives because he did not want to become a focal point of the season. But by the time the year was over, he had emerged as the Yankees' most prominent pitcher, making Mussina's situation difficult to ignore. "People who talk to you about it say, 'Make sure you're doing it for yourself,'" Mussina said. "Every decision you make, there's other factors involved. I have young children and they're getting involved with things. I've been away a long time and I want to be involved more. I'm certainly not getting younger, they're not getting younger and you can't get that time back. It's just the right time for me." Completing his career with two clubs, the Yankees and Orioles, Mussina notched 270 victories, putting him within striking distance of the conversation for enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Having already seamlessly transitioned into a lifestyle of cleaning closets and shoveling snow -- his activities on his first day as a non-active player -- the decision is not Mussina's to make. His supporters will point to a high-octane offensive era and his standing with two AL East clubs among his many credentials. "He was a true professional both on and off the field. Moose's accomplishments in the game over the last 18 years represent a Hall of Fame player." Enjoying a resurgent season that saw him bounce back from injuries and inconsistency that marred his 2007 campaign, Mussina made adjustments to his style on the mound and remained healthy off of it. Finishing the year 20-9 with a 3.37 ERA, Mussina becomes the first pitcher to retire immediately following a 20-win season since Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax hung up his spikes after winning 27 games for the Dodgers in 1966, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. As Mussina approached that 20th victory on Sept. 28 at Boston's Fenway Park, he addressed his proximity to the game's vaunted 300-win plateau, analyzing his situation in a typically cerebral style. Mussina said that he could not count on having another 20-win season if he were to return, and if the more realistic goal was to win approximately 10 games a year, he'd be pitching to the age of 42 just to attain a milestone mark -- hanging on, even though his best work had already been completed. "I didn't want to be one of those guys that bounces all over the place," Mussina said. "That's not how I feel about the game. If I can't contribute at the level I want to contribute at, then someone else should be doing it." The Yankees had not been operating as though they were expecting Mussina to return, as both manager Joe Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman expressed doubts. Girardi said Wednesday that he was not surprised by reports of Mussina's retirement. "He had led me to believe that that's what was going to happen at the end of the year," Girardi said. "I wasn't quite sure, in a sense, that I believed him. Sometimes when you get away from it, you really miss it and your family might encourage you to go. But I know he talked about wanting to be home more, and if he does, I won't be surprised." Mussina has spoken often about how much he enjoys his hometown of Montoursville, Pa. -- certainly, his free-agent signing was one in which New York City was not to be a major selling point. His home features a collection of vintage automobiles and John Deere tractors that demand attention. Now that he is unburdened of the ticking clock toward pitchers and catchers reporting, Mussina said he is unsure if he will remain in baseball in some capacity. He plans to spend much of his time this April at his son's baseball games, cheering him on alongside the other parents and playing Dad. "I don't have any real plans -- I'm just enjoying the free time," Mussina said. "Guys who have retired before, I've asked them what they do with themselves, and they say they're busier now than when they were active players. I've been home for 8 1/2 weeks and I can't believe it's almost Thanksgiving already. The time is flying and the days are busy." A seven-time AL Gold Glove Award winner, Mussina spent the last eight years of his career with the Yankees, signing as a free agent before the 2001 season after pitching his first 10 years in the Majors with the Orioles. He compiled a record of 123-72 with a 3.88 ERA in pinstripes, and since signing with the Yankees, no other AL pitcher recorded more wins than Mussina. "I think I made a name for myself in Baltimore, but I had a lot more exposure and opportunities in New York," Mussina said. "We had seven trips to the postseason, a couple of trips to World Series. "You're on a bigger stage pitching for the Yankees. I played my last game as a Yankee, and I think if I would have chosen to return, they would have asked me. I loved playing in both places, but when retirement came around, I was still a Yankee." He had six top five finishes in voting for the AL Cy Young Award, finishing second to Pedro Martinez in 1999. Mussina was sixth in voting this year. His 270 wins tie Mussina with Burleigh Grimes for 33rd on baseball's all-time list, having most recently surpassed Jim Palmer (268), Bob Feller (266), Eppa Rixey (266) and Jim McCormick (265). With a 123-72 record, Mussina finished 51 games over .500 with the Yankees while going 66 games over .500 with Baltimore (147-81). According to Elias, he joined Randy Johnson as the only pitchers since 1900 to own a career record of at least 50 games over .500 with two different teams. "I can't complain at all about my experience in New York -- it was the best," Mussina said. "That's what I'm going to take from what I've been able to do." Mussina left Baltimore to sign with a Yankees team that had just won four World Series titles in five years, coming off their Subway Series victory over the Mets. And though Mussina was never able to win the ring that was once thought to be a virtual certainty, he helped the Yankees reach the 2001 and '03 Fall Classics, saying that he leaves with no regrets. "I'm just proud that the Yankees asked me to come in and do a job for them, and I was able to do it," Mussina said. "It's not easy to go out there 30 times a year and be successful and stay healthy and do what everybody is expecting you to do every time. "Yeah, I lost, and I didn't pitch great every time. But for the most part over the long haul, I did what I was supposed to do. When you're asked to do a job, you expect yourself to go out there and do it. I'm proud of myself that I went out there and did it as well as I did." 2009: Rebirth Of An Era - Ken Griffey Jr. returns to Seattle I myself am not a Mariners fan, but I have a very dear friend whose a very dedicated Mariners fan, so for her rejoice! Jr. Griffey is returning home! Here's info taken from MLB's official site confirming Griffey's long-awaited return to Seattle! Griffey headed back to Mariners Future Hall of Famer returning to where storied career began By Jim Street / PEORIA, Ariz. -- Ken Griffey Jr. is coming home. The future Hall of Fame outfielder, who began his Major League career with the Mariners 20 years ago this year, has decided to return to Seattle. "I can't begin to tell you how ecstatic all of us are," said general manager Jack Zduriencik after announcing the deal in the press room at the Peoria Sports Complex at about 6:30 p.m. MT. "He is as well. I spoke to Brian Griffey's agent, Brian Goldberg a few minutes ago, and he said that Ken is relieved and he is excited about coming back to Seattle." Griffey accepted the Mariners' one-year contract offer, which includes a 2 million base salary and up to 2.5 million in incentives -- based on at-bats and attendance. His return to Safeco Field is expected to lure at least 200,000 additional fans this season. Exactly when Griffey will report to Spring Training was not immediately determined. But the mere fact Griffey decided to return to his MLB roots has the organization on cloud nine. "I can get rather emotional about things, and I definitely got emotional this morning when I got off the plane in Seattle and got a phone call from Brian," Mariners president Chuck Armstrong said. "He asked if I was on the ground and outside the plane. I told him I was, and he said, 'Ken wants to talk to you.' "Ken got on the phone and kind of played with me a little bit before telling me he was coming back. I am not ashamed to tell you I teared up." The 39-year-old Griffey is expected to bring No. 24 out of storage when he arrives and goes to work providing run production and leadership in the clubhouse. "With his experience, he's been there, done that," Zduriencik said. "There's not going to be anything he's going to see that he hasn't been through before. He's going to relate to some of the young players on this ballclub. He's going to relate to some of the veteran players and those who are in between, those players who are just about to take off. "If I'm a young player on this ballclub, I've got to be pretty excited. I'm going to have my ears open, I'm going to listen to what he says and I'm going to watch him. He's going to bring a lot to the table that you're not going to be able to measure in the box score." Zduriencik said the Mariners decided several weeks ago to pursue MLB's active home run leader. "It was a baseball decision," Zduriencik said. "His health was probably the most important thing because at the end of last year he had the physical issues, and not a lot of us knew that. We had conversations with Brian, and it became clear that he Griffey was not 100 percent healthy during most of the 2008 season. "More than anything else, a few weeks ago we made this decision that this was the guy, and we were getting excited about the medicals we were getting. When we sat and talked, it kept becoming clear that it would be a good fit for us." Armstrong traveled to Monterey, Calif., last week to meet Griffey face-to-face and gauge his desire to return to Seattle. Junior, playing in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament, told Armstrong that he wanted to come back and why. Griffey met with Zduriencik and manager Don Wakamatsu for about two hours on Sunday during a stopover on his return flight to Orlando, Fla., and he underwent a complete physical at the Peoria Sports Complex. Griffey passed. Meanwhile, across the country, the Braves also decided Griffey would be a good fit in their lineup and used Chipper Jones as the primary lure. In fact, for the past several days, it appeared that Griffey would sign with the Braves. Negotiations were moving at a steady pace until Tuesday afternoon, when the veteran outfielder learned of a report in the Atlanta-Journal Constitution that indicated he'd already decided to play in Atlanta. But Griffey told in a telephone interview later that morning that he had not made his decision and was "still kicking things around with my family." Between the newspaper story and a phone call Wednesday morning from Hall of Fame outfielder Willie Mays, Griffey decided mid-afternoon on Wednesday that his career was making an about-face, going back to where it began. "We've talked all along about coming up with a left-handed hitter, and we have an opportunity to do that in bringing back Ken Griffey Jr.," Zduriencik said. "His leadership, his experience and him coming back is a tremendous, tremendous thing for this organization. From top to bottom, we're very excited about him coming here." Griffey began his storied career in Seattle 20 years ago as a 19-year-old kid with a fabulous personality and smile to match. He hit home runs -- 398 of them -- and made spectacular catches. He was selected to 10 consecutive All-Star teams, won 10 Gold Gloves and one Most Valuable Player Award (1997). He no longer is that player, but the surgery he had on his left knee last October to repair a partially torn meniscus -- apparently injured when he hit his knee against a truck inside the Reds clubhouse -- has completely healed, and he's ready to go. The methodical Mariners were the last organization interested in signing Griffey to request a medical report on the operation. Junior received a clean bill of health and lost about 15 pounds. "This is the one player, at the end of the day, that we thought we needed to bring home," Zduriencik said. "Chuck's relationship with Ken was fantastic, but at no time were we pressured by either Chuck or Howard CEO Howard Lincoln to do this." 4/13/09: Somber Day in MLB as 2 beloved icons of the game pass away They say '13' is unlucky? Kalas, 73, had been looking at the Phillies' lineup and talking to players inside the visitors' clubhouse at Nationals Park just minutes before he took the elevator to the Phillies' broadcast booth, where he was found unconscious at about 12:20 p.m. Phillies broadcasting manager Rob Brooks performed CPR on Kalas before medical personnel rushed him to George Washington University Medical Center, where he died at 1:20 p.m. The cause of death was unknown. Funeral arrangements are pending. (Though it's now known Harry died of a heart attack.) The Phillies played their game against the Nationals and won, 9-8, but that hardly mattered. Kalas, a Philadelphia icon, had passed. "I heard Harry's voice probably for the first time as a 9-year old kid and grew up listening to Harry and Richie Ashburn," said Phillies left-hander Jamie Moyer, who grew up a Phils fan in Souderton, Pa. "That's what I knew as a kid. I came over here in 2006 and it was the same voice. Just a super person to be around." "What a sweetheart," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona, who was the Phillies' manager from 1997-2000. "A voice that is unmatched. I used to tease him all the time. I'd say, 'Harry, I feel like I hear you more in the winter than I do in the summer,' because he'd be on a commercial or a football game or radio. Everybody wanted him." Kalas was a Hall of Fame talent with an infamous voice and delivery. He was inducted into the broadcaster's wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 2002, having won the Ford C. Frick Award, which is presented to broadcasters who made major contributions to baseball. Kalas, who is survived by his wife Eileen and sons Todd, Brad and Kane, had been a Major League Baseball broadcaster for 44 years, spending the past 39 years with the Phillies. While Philadelphians knew him as the narrator of their summers, fans across the country might have known him better as the voice for NFL Films or his voice-over work in commercials. But baseball is what Kalas loved the most, and the baseball community expressed their condolences en force Monday. "Major League Baseball has lost one of the great voices of our generation," Commissioner Bud Selig said. "Harry Kalas was an outstanding ambassador for the game ... Baseball announcers have a special bond with their audience, and Harry represented the best of baseball not only to the fans of the Phillies, but to fans everywhere." Everybody liked Kalas, and he seemed to like everybody. Kalas had such status with the Phillies that he sat in the back of the team's charter flights, which typically is reserved for players. "He came up to me today, I think right before he was about to head up to the booth and asked me if I would have his step-daughter be my guest to go to the White House," Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard said. "I told him, 'Yeah, that's no problem. Absolutely no problem.' He was happy about it." The Phillies had been scheduled to visit President Barack Obama on Tuesday at the White House, their last celebration for winning the 2008 World Series championship. That visit has been postponed. "He damn sure will be missed," said Dallas Green, who managed the 1980 World Series champion Phillies. Kalas had missed the beginning of Spring Training after recovering from an undisclosed medical procedure. He arrived in Clearwater, Fla., in March, entering the final year of a three-year contract. He turned 73 on March 26. Kalas was not scheduled to broadcast on his birthday, so asked why he was at Bright House Field that afternoon he smiled and said, "For the love of the game." He chuckled and kept walking. But some worried about Kalas' health. He was noticeably thinner and seemed to have less energy than in the past. "I was worried ... about him," Green said. But every time fellow broadcaster Tom McCarthy asked how he was feeling, Kalas always responded, "I'm feeling better every day." "You never think it's going to happen anyway, but I thought he was getting stronger with each passing day," McCarthy said. McCarthy and the rest of the broadcasters went on without him Monday, and the players played knowing they would never hear one of Kalas' infamous "Outta here!" calls for one of their home runs again. "I know I can speak for the Phillies when I say Harry Kalas is loved by everyone," Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt said. "All of us could relate to our daily confrontations with his smile, his charm, and his warmth. He spread his passion for people, and baseball, all over the country for almost 50 years. His voice will resonate in my mind the rest of my life. I will never be called 'Michael Jack' again without seeing his smile." Kalas was born March 26, 1936, in Chicago. He grew up in Naperville, Ill., and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1959. He spent two years in the Army stationed in Hawaii. A member of the original Astros broadcast team in 1965, Kalas joined the Phillies six years later. "Harry was a special friend of mine and my family for 44 years," said Phillies chairman Bill Giles, who hired Kalas. "Baseball broadcasters become an integral part of baseball fans' families. They are in the homes of fans every day for the entire season. No one will ever be able to match the joy Harry and Richie Ashburn brought to our fans for all those years. He had a great voice, understood and loved the game, and loved people." "It's a very sad thing to have happen," said Astros general manager Ed Wade, who started his baseball career as a public relations intern for the Phillies in 1977. "You have our four decades of a guy being the voice of the Phillies. He wasn't on the national stage, but everyone knew that Harry Kalas and Phillies baseball were intertwined." And because they were so intertwined, Phillies baseball will never sound the same again. Kalas' family released a statement Monday: "The Kalas family is overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and affection from all of Harry's fans and friends cross America. Especially the Phillies fans whom he loved as much as the game of baseball itself." In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions be sent in Kalas' memory to Phillies Charities, Inc., Phillies, 1 Citizens Bank Way, Philadelphia, PA 19148. Tigers legend Fidrych passes away 'The Bird' was named AL Rookie of the Year in 1976 DETROIT -- Former All-Star pitcher Mark Fidrych, whose incredible rookie season with the 1976 Tigers made him a national sensation, passed away Monday in an apparent accident on his Massachusetts farm at age 54. Worcester County district attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. told The Associated Press that a family friend found Fidrych at about 2:30 p.m. ET under a dump truck that he appeared to have been working on. He was on the same farm he bought more than 30 years ago in his hometown of Northborough, Mass. It was an abrupt and tragic end for someone who had suddenly endeared himself to Detroit and the rest of the baseball world seemingly out of nowhere, and remained memorable even after his greatness proved fleeting. "The entire Detroit Tigers organization was saddened to learn of the passing of former player Mark Fidrych today," the team said in a statement Monday evening. "Mark was beloved by Tigers fans, and he was a special person with a unique personality. The Tigers send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends." Fidrych was the last player to make the Tigers' roster out of Spring Training in 1976, a wiry 21-year-old right-hander who was initially tucked away on the back of the roster. He made two brief relief appearances in Detroit's first 23 games that season before a rotation scratch prompted the Tigers to give him a spot start. He pitched a two-hitter against the Indians, and the rest was history. Fidrych won seven straight games during a 9-1 start that landed him on the American League All-Star team. Among his feats were back-to-back 11-inning complete games in his third and fourth Major League starts, an 11-inning shutout of the Oakland A's coming out of the All-Star break in July, and six consecutive complete games in August of that year. Not only did Fidrych win 19 games that season, his 2.34 ERA led the Majors, and his 24 complete games led the American League. Just as incredible as his performance, however, was his persona. A 6-foot-3 New England farm kid with bushy blond hair seemingly trying to escape from under his cap, his genuine personality and unforgettable mound demeanor -- including talking to himself as well as the baseball on occasion, while also pacing around the mound with each out -- quickly landed him on sports pages and nationally televised games. Alan Trammell was a Tigers Draft pick in the summer of '76, and a Tigers shortstop by the end of the next season. His memory of his first Opening Day in the big leagues in 1978 includes an unforgettable image of Fidrych. "I can visualize this right now: It was the ninth inning, it was windy, and there was a wrapper in front of the mound," Trammell said, "and 'The Bird' bent over as he did in his windup. This wrapper blew away, and he went to get it, and the crowd went crazy. I was at shortstop that day. It was something I'll never forget. Unfortunately, he's no longer with us. "I know he enjoyed himself and lived life the way he wanted to. For myself, as far as being selfish as a ballplayer, I wish I could've played with him longer. He was special when he was doing his thing." Just as sudden as his rise to fame was his struggle to repeat it. He suffered torn knee cartilage during Spring Training in 1977, costing him more than a month. He returned seemingly the same pitcher, racking up six straight complete-game victories in June, before his arm essentially gave out in a July game. Fidrych started just 16 more games for the Tigers from 1978-80, including his final big league appearance at age 25, then a season at Triple-A Evansville under then-manager Jim Leyland. Detroit released him in 1981. He then pitched in the Minors for the Red Sox until 1983. He officially retired before the age of 30 and went back to his farm. "Very charismatic guy," former teammate Kirk Gibson said. "A great teammate. Very energetic every day. He played baseball with great passion and he lived his life that way." Fidrych remained a beloved figure in Detroit, and became a more visible presence in recent years. He usually visited the Tigers when the schedule brought them to Boston, and he took part in several Tigers fantasy camps. Instead of lamenting his sudden fall, he remained an upbeat, positive person, true to the traits that made him so popular during his incredible season. For all the ups and downs in his career, friends and colleagues all agreed, his personality remained constant. "He reminds me of that line of poet Rudyard Kipling: 'He could meet triumph and disaster and treat them the same way,'" Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell said. Fidrych married his wife, Ann, in 1986, and had a daughter, Jessica. DX Army I am a proud member of the DX Army. HBK may have retired in reality, but here on the net, DX will live on forever! D-Generation X, that's D-Generation X. YOU MAKE THE RULES AND WE. WILL. BREAK 'EM!! Lima Time No More MLB lost one of its most enthusiastic guys to ever play the game in Jose Lima. Below is the tragic story. Former Major League pitcher Jose Lima died of a massive heart attack at his California home early Sunday morning. He was 37. Lima's wife, Dorca Astacio, told ESPN Deportes' Enrique Rojas that she thought Lima was having nightmares, so she called the paramedics, but their efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. According to Astacio, Lima was not experiencing any health problems prior to the heart attack. Lima, a native of the Dominican Republic, pitched in the Major Leagues for 13 seasons, from 1994-2006. After breaking into the big leagues with the Tigers in 1994, Lima went on to compile an 89-102 career record to go with a 5.26 ERA. His best season came in 1999 as a member of the potent Houston Astros rotation. Lima posted a 21-10 record that season, along with a 3.58 ERA. In addition to the Astros and Tigers, the fiery right-hander also spent time with the Royals, Dodgers and Mets. In his final year in the big leagues, 2006, Lima went 0-4 for the Mets. Before Sunday's games, Lima's untimely passing was recognized with a moment of silence in Houston, Kansas City and Los Angeles, cities in which the late pitcher was widely celebrated. His five years in Houston, arguably the best in his career, were enough to make an indelible impression on those in the organization. "It saddened me greatly to hear of Jose's passing," Astros owner Drayton McLane said in a statement released by the club. "He had an outstanding career with the Astros and won 21 games in 1999 on one of our greatest teams ever. He was truly a gifted person, both on the field and off of it. He could dance, he could sing, but his best gift of all was that he was an extremely happy person. He just lit up our clubhouse with his personality, which was his greatest asset. Jose was not shortchanged in life in any way. He lived life to the fullest every day." His success on the mound was only part of what made Lima a unique figure in baseball. As reaction spilled out from around the Majors on Sunday, it became clear: Lima's charm and passionate approach to baseball had won him fans in the clubhouse and in the stands all across the league. Indeed, Lima's personality was what really made him stand out, Astros president of baseball operations Tal Smith said on Sunday. "Jose was one of the memorable and will be one of the most unforgettable characters we ever had that played for the Astros," Smith said. "He just had a great flair and enthusiasm for life and for pitching and singing and dancing. He was a great performer, and for two years, he was a very successful pitcher." Throughout the day on Sunday, as word trickled through clubhouses, expressions of grief came forward from those who got to see Lima at his best on the mound: his former teammates. "Obviously, it's shocking," Astros first baseman Lance Berkman said. "He was a great teammate. He had a lot of energy, and he had such a good run here for those three or four years and was entertaining on and off the field. Just a great guy to have around." Former Astros teammate Craig Biggio echoed Berkman's thoughts, highlighting Lima's role as a team player. "A lot of people remember him for his actions on the mound, but he was a great teammate," Biggio said. "He wanted everybody to be successful. He wanted to win and do his job, which we did, but he wanted everybody to be as successful as he was. He was very genuine. The baseball family lost a good guy." Brandon Inge, who played with Lima in Detroit in 2002, singled him out as "one of the good guys in the game." "He just an all-around good guy, a great teammate," Inge said. "He was just fun to be around. He's going to be badly missed in baseball." While Lima will perhaps be best remembered for his contributions on the mound, both physical and emotional, it was the loss of the man himself that Royals DH Jose Guillen was mourning on Sunday. "He was a good friend of mine; we were real close. I [talked] to him every year and when I [went to the Dominican Republic, I [saw] him and we always talked," Guillen said. "This is a shock." Jeff Weaver, Lima's former teammate in Detroit and Los Angeles, agreed. "It's a hard day," Weaver said. "He was full of energy, loved life. It was definitely Lima Time, you know? He was a lot of fun to be around. Infectious, entertaining." Everywhere he played, Lima proved to be a fan favorite, as his animated appearances became known as "Lima Time." His enthusiastic gestures and emotion drew Lima a lot of attention and sometimes even negative reactions from opposing teams, but to those who knew him closely, like former teammate Brad Ausmus, that was just his personality. "Playing with him you come to realize that the energy you see on the mound isn't a false persona, that's Jose Lima," Brad Ausmus, who played with Lima in Detroit and Houston, said on Sunday. "He acts like that all the time; he's always happy-go-lucky, jumping around, joking, laughing. So that's who he is; there's nothing fake about him in that sense. There are times when opposing teams or players would get upset with the way he carries himself, but that was his energy. Even on days he wasn't pitching, he was like that. If it's honest emotion, I don't think anybody would really have a problem with it, but you have to get to know him to know that's how he is." In his mound antics, however, many of his competitors saw someone who possessed an intensely competitive nature and passion for baseball at the highest level. "He was a great competitor," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He had a real love for the game, with the way he played and the enthusiasm he showed. Sometimes he didn't have his best stuff, but you liked the way he battled and competed." In 2004, Lima competed his way into playoff history as a member of the Dodgers, as he fired a five-hit shutout against the Cardinals for L.A.'s only win in the National League Division Series. Lima remained a beloved figure in Los Angeles, often attending Dodgers games. He took in Friday's Interleague game against the Tigers with his son Jose Jr. Dodgers owner Frank McCourt spoke highly of Lima in a statement released by the team on Sunday:. "We are shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic loss of Jose Lima. Though he was taken from us way too soon, he truly lived his life to the fullest and his personality was simply unforgettable. He had the ability to light up a room and that's exactly what he did every time I saw him. His memorable contributions to the Dodgers in 2004 and throughout baseball will always be remembered. Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to his family during this extremely difficult time." Lima continued to play baseball after his departure from the Majors, appearing in 22 games in 2007 for the Saltillo Saraperos of the Mexican League and making 11 appearances with the Camden Riversharks of the independent Atlantic League in 2008. He also pitched in the Golden League in 2009, playing for the Long Beach Armada before being traded to the Edmonton Capitals. Lima never gave up his hope of returning to the big leagues. "I'm just waiting for that phone call," Lima told while playing for the Armada last season. "I know that break is coming." As recently as this past offseason, Lima's enthusiasm for the game was still in full tilt, as he pitched for the Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican Winter League. "He just loved the game," said Tigers catcher Alex Avila, who faced Lima this past winter. "That was the kind of guy he was, or at least the impression that I got. When we faced him, he'd talk to everybody. I'm out there warming up, and he ran over to me and said, 'Hi'. My impression was, he was doing it because he loved playing baseball. I mean, he was still enjoying it like he was a kid out there. It was great to see." His energy level for baseball was so high at the time of his death, in fact, that on Saturday, just one day before his passing, Lima had distributed a press release announcing the opening of his own Dominican Baseball School in Los Angeles. The release announcing the school promised that, in addition to enhancing children's baseball skills on the diamond, the school would also focus on "showing each and every player how to appreciate, understand, and love the game just as much as Jose does and always has." 2010: Ken Griffey Jr. calls it quits Lost in what is now dubbed 'The Perfect Game That Wasn't',(See for more as its all over the place and will likely for days to come) last night came the end of an era: Ken Griffey Jr. a man who may have been the Home Run King had it not been for injuries, announced his retirement last night before the June 2, 2010 game between his beloved Mariners and the Minnesota Twins. Taken from , confirms one of the all-time greats exit from the game. SEATTLE -- The final stop on a baseball journey that started and ended in a Mariners uniform comes almost six years from now for Ken Griffey Jr. far away from Safeco Field. That's when the Hall of Fame doors will surely open for one of the best players of all-time. "Jack, Chuck and I are going to be standing with tears in our eyes when we see Kenny inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown," said Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln on Wednesday afternoon. There were no tears, but a lot of appreciation, coming from Lincoln, club president Chuck Armstrong and general manager Jack Zduriencik as they stood near the home dugout at Safeco Field discussing Griffey's decision to end a 21-plus year Major League career. Griffey did not make himself available to the media, expressing his thoughts through a statement released by the organization almost three hours before the Mariners played the Twins. "I've come to a decision today to retire from Major League Baseball as an active player," Griffey said in the statement. "This has been on my mind recently, but it's not an easy decision to come by. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to play Major League Baseball for so long and thankful for all the friendships I have made, while also being proud of my accomplishments." Griffey ended his career with 630 home runs, fifth-highest in MLB history, 10 Gold Gloves, one Most Valuable Player Award -- but no World Series appearances. "My hope is that my teammates can focus on baseball and win a championship for themselves and for the great fans of Seattle, who so much deserve one," the last of the four-paragraph statement said. A championship this season appears unlikely as the Mariners went into Wednesday's game with a 20-31 record and in last place in the AL West, eight games behind the Athletics. Griffey batted .184 (18-for-98) with no home runs and seven RBIs this season as the designated hitter and had just one at-bat in the Mariners' past seven games, grounding into a fielder's choice in the ninth-inning pinch-hit appearance on Monday night. His final hit at Safeco Field came on May 20, a walk-off pinch-hit single in the ninth that gave the Mariners a 4-3 victory over the Blue Jays. But his overall lack of production, reduction in playing time and a recent flap over a clubhouse nap during a game apparently were the major factors in Griffey calling it quits. "While I feel I am still able to make a contribution on the field, and nobody in the front office asked me to retire, I told the Mariners when I met with them prior to the 2009 season and was invited back, that I will never allow myself to become a distraction," Griffey said in the statement. "I feel that without enough occasional starts to be sharper coming off the bench, my continued presence as a player would be an unfair distraction to my teammates, and their success as a team is what the ultimate goal should be." Armstrong, who has been a loyal fan and backer of Griffey throughout Junior's career, said he had been talking to the franchise icon and his agent, Brian Goldberg, for the past several days. "I was surprised by the swiftness of Kenny's decision," said Armstrong, who received a phone call from Goldberg on Wednesday morning, and talked to Griffey later in the day. He said Griffey "is at peace" with the decision. ALL-TIME HOMER LEADERS Player Homers Seasons Barry Bonds 762 22 Hank Aaron 755 23 Babe Ruth 714 22 Willie Mays 660 22 Ken Griffey Jr. 630 22 Sammy Sosa 609 18 Alex Rodriguez 590 (still active) 17 Frank Robinson 586 21 Mark McGwire 583 16 Harmon Killebrew 573 22 There apparently were no attempts by anyone in the organization to change Griffey's mind. "It's very difficult with the lack of playing time and the way the situation ended up, but there's so much respect for Junior in this clubhouse," manager Don Wakamatsu said. "It's a tough day to swallow the fact that you're losing a guy from the game that's been a legend and maybe one of the greatest players who's ever played the game." It was not immediately known when Griffey would return to Safeco Field to either meet the media for a farewell press conference or on the field to personally thank the fans, which he did in the statement: "Thanks to all of you for welcoming me back, and thanks again to everyone over the years that has played a part in the success of my career." Zduriencik was not familiar with Griffey's impact on Mariners baseball in Seattle but became acutely aware of his popularity. "We thank him for what he did. His contributions were tremendous. What he meant to the club last year, all the fun he had in the clubhouse, and the way he contributed on the field. He's a class person. "It is rare in this game when you get an opportunity to reunite a player and a team. We feel honored that Ken was able to end his career where it began, here in Seattle." The first overall pick in the 1987 First-Year Player Draft, Griffey played his first 11 seasons with Seattle, before spending the next eight and half with the Reds. He played a brief stint with the White Sox in the second half of the 2008 season, before returning home to the Mariners prior to last season, when he batted .213, hit 19 home runs and drove in 57 runs. But he meant more than numbers. He and fellow veteran Mike Sweeney completely changed the clubhouse atmosphere with their leadership. Their influence played a huge role in the Mariners having a MLB-best 24-game improvement in the win-loss department. More of the same was expected this season, but it never happened. "I don't think we contemplated this," Zduriencik said. "What we hoped for was that this would be a good year for everybody, Kenny and for the ballclub. We've had our bumps this year." Even so, there were no regrets bringing Griffey back in the first place. "We are extremely appreciative of everything Ken has meant to this organization and to the city," Zduriencik said. "It's an end of an era. He is a sensational, tremendous baseball player, a great person and I feel honored to have been around Ken for a year and half. "You get to the point in every superstar's career when it kind of winds down. Ken has made the decision that this is the time and we support him 100 percent. If there is anything the Seattle Mariners can do for Ken Griffey and his family, we're there for him." Fans attending Wednesday night's game were informed of Griffey's decision prior to the first pitch and the grounds crew put Griffey's No. 24 in sand behind second base. "This is a tough day for the people of our community who have loved Ken, admired him as a tremendous baseball player and a great human being," Lincoln said. "It's always tough for great superstars like Ken or anyone else to make a decision to retire. "This has been his life for so many years, but he has made his decision. We certainly support it and we will honor him in every way possible." Taken from the Orioles site confirms the tragic death of Flanny as he was affectionately known by O's fans. Rest in Peace Mike, you'll be missed very much. RIP - 1951-2011. The cause of Mike's death is apparently suicide but has not been confirmed by the team. Former Orioles left-hander, coach, executive and broadcaster Mike Flanagan was found dead Wednesday on his property in Maryland. He was 59. Baltimore County (Md.) police responded to a 911 call placed at 4:26 p.m. ET Wednesday afternoon after a body was found on the property. Authorities later identified it as that of the former Oriole, the Baltimore Sun originally reported. The emergency call notified authorities of a death in the 15000 block of York Road in Sparks, Md., according to police spokeswoman Elise Armacost. Initial reports revealed that the body was discovered on a trail on the grounds. He is survived by his wife, Alex, and their three daughters, Kerry, Kathryn and Kendall. "It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of my friend Mike Flanagan," Orioles managing partner Peter Angelos said in a statement. "In over a quarter century with the organization, Flanny became an integral part of the Orioles family, for his accomplishments both on and off the field. "His losses will be felt deeply and profoundly by all of us with the ballclub and by Orioles fans everywhere who admired him. On behalf of the club, I extend my condolences to his wife Alex and daugheters Kerry, Kathryn and Kendall." Flanagan, selected in the seventh round of the 1973 Draft, spent 18 years in the Majors -- 15 with the Orioles, with whom he compiled a 141-116 record, a 3.89 ERA and 1,297 strikeouts. Flanagan earned the 1979 Cy Young Award after posting a 23-9 record, 3.09 ERA and 190 strikeouts, leading the Orioles to the American League pennant before falling to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series. The right-hander went 1-1 in 15 innings with 13 strikeouts in the Fall Classic. "He was fantastic that year," said former Orioles teammate and current YES broadcaster Ken Singleton, who played with Flanagan from 1975-84 and hit 35 home runs in '79. "The first time I ever met Mike's dad, he thanked me for hitting all the home runs [15] in the games his son pitched. It just so happened I think I was hitting one every fourth or fifth day, and he was on the mound." Flanagan later returned to the World Series in 1983, making one start as the Orioles eventually took the series and provided him with his lone ring. Flanagan went 12-4 with a 3.30 ERA in 20 starts that season. "I am so sorry to hear about Mike's passing," Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. said in a statement, aired on MASN during Wednesday's Orioles game. "He was a good friend and teammate and our thoughts are with Alex and his family. Mike was an Oriole through and through and he'll be sorely missed by family, friends and fans. This is a sad day." "He was a good pitcher, an even better teammate," said Singleton, whose home is near Flanagan's residence in Sparks. "His locker was only a couple down from mine at Memorial Stadium. I played with him for 10 years. He's a good man. He's one of the best pitchers the Orioles ever had." Flanagan spent three-plus seasons with the Blue Jays from 1987-90 before returning to Baltimore in '91 and spending the final two seasons of his career as a reliever. In '91, Flanagan was part of a four-pitcher no-hitter, which stands as the last no-hitter thrown by the franchise. He retired following the 1992 season with a career record of 167-143 and 3.90 ERA. He struck out 1,491 batters in 526 games. Following his retirement, Flanagan was a common presence around the Orioles' organization, serving as a broadcaster from 1996-97 and 1999-2002 before moving into the front office on Dec. 4, 2002, when he held the position of executive vice president of baseball operations until 2008. Flanagan worked alongside vice president Jim Duquette, giving the Orioles defacto dual general managers. Flanagan, whose grandfather Ed Sr. and father Ed Jr. both played in the Red Sox organization, was voted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1994. Fans can pay respects to Mike at http:///news/article.jsp?ymd=20110824&content_id=23719698&vkey=news_bal&c_id=bal A second article on August 25 states the following. Over his 15 seasons with the Orioles, lefty Mike Flanagan was a fan favorite and one of the best starting pitchers in club history. But it was his impact on the organization off the field that made the news of his death Wednesday so hard to take. "I always marveled at the way he treated everybody regardless of their background," O's manager Buck Showalter said. "Whether it was a guy that never played in the big leagues or whatever. The Orioles have lost a real source of wisdom. It's just hard to imagine not getting to see him now and then." Baltimore County (Md.) police responded to a 911 call placed at 4:26 p.m. ET Wednesday afternoon after a body was found on the property of Flanagan, the former Orioles pitcher, broadcaster and front-office executive. That body was later identified as the former Oriole, the Baltimore Sun originally reported. No cause of death is known, pending official word from the coroner's office. (It's now known that it was a suicide.) Flanagan was 59. He is survived by his wife, Alex, and daughters Kerry, Kathryn and Kendall. Flanagan's family released a statement on Thursday that read: "We thank you for your support and kind words at this difficult time. Thank you for respecting our privacy as we grieve. "A private memorial will be held at a later date." "I am so sorry to hear about Mike's passing," Hall of Famer Cal Ripken said in a statement to Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. "He was a good friend and teammate and our thoughts are with Alex and his family. Mike was an Oriole through and through and he'll be sorely missed by family, friends and fans. This is a sad day." The emergency call notified authorities of a death in the 15000 block of York Road in Sparks, Md., according to police spokeswoman Elise Armacost. Initial reports revealed that the body was discovered on a trail on the grounds. Sparks is located about 18 miles north of the site of the Orioles' former ballpark, Memorial Stadium. "It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of my friend Mike Flanagan," Orioles managing partner Peter Angelos said in a statement. "In over a quarter century with the organization, Flanny became an integral part of the Orioles family, for his accomplishments both on and off the field. "His loss will be felt deeply and profoundly by all of us with the ballclub and by Orioles fans everywhere who admired him. On behalf of the club, I extend my condolences to his wife Alex and daughters Kerry, Kathryn and Kendall." Flanagan, selected in the seventh round of the 1973 Draft, spent 18 years in the Majors -- 15 with the Orioles, with whom he compiled a 141-116 record, a 3.89 ERA and 1,297 strikeouts. Flanagan earned the 1979 American League Cy Young Award after posting a 23-9 record, 3.09 ERA and 190 strikeouts, leading Baltimore to the AL pennant before falling to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series in seven games. The left-hander went 1-1 in 15 innings with 13 strikeouts in the Fall Classic. "He was fantastic that year," said former O's teammate and current YES broadcaster Ken Singleton, who played with Flanagan from 1975-84 and hit 35 home runs in '79. "The first time I ever met Mike's dad, he thanked me for hitting all the home runs [15] in the games his son pitched. It just so happened I think I was hitting one every fourth or fifth day, and he was on the mound." Flanagan later returned to the World Series in 1983, making one start as the Orioles eventually took the Series, 4-1, and provided him with his lone ring. Flanagan went 12-4 with a 3.30 ERA in 20 starts that season. "He was a good pitcher, an even better teammate," said Singleton, whose home is close to Flanagan's in Sparks. Flanagan retired following the 1992 season with a career record of 167-143 and 3.90 ERA. He struck out 1,491 batters in 526 games. "He was one of our family," said Hall of Fame right-hander Jim Palmer, a former teammate of Flanagan's and his fellow color commentator on Orioles telecasts. "Great friend, great competitor. "He was like a breath of fresh air with his humor and insight and all those things. He was just a terrific guy." Current A's manager Bob Melvin, another former teammate, said he was shocked to hear of the news of Flanagan's death. "I think the world of him," Melvin said. "I was teammates with him just the one year in Baltimore, but we've had a friendship since. He struck Travis Fryman out to end Memorial Stadium's history, and I was catching, and he had a photo of it blown up years later, framed, and gave it to me. "He was a man's man, and the ultimate baseball guy's guy. He was a leader, just someone you really looked up to and respected. ... That's just unbelievable, completely shocking." Following his retirement, Flanagan was a common presence around the Orioles' organization, serving as a broadcaster from 1996-97 and 1999-2002 before moving into the front office on Dec. 4, 2002, when he took the position of vice president for baseball operations, working alongside vice president Jim Beattie, giving Baltimore de facto dual general managers. In 2005, Flanagan was named executive vice president for baseball operations, a position he held until 2008. Flanagan, whose grandfather Ed Sr. and father Ed Jr. both played in the Red Sox organization, was voted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1994. During his time in the Orioles' front office, Flanagan claimed right-hander Jeremy Guthrie off waivers from the Indians in 2007. They shared a special bond -- and a uniform number -- since then, which shows the impact Flanagan had on the Baltimore organization. "Since the day I was given No. 46, I've had thousands of people tell me that was the number of their favorite pitcher for the Orioles when they were growing up," Guthrie said. "So from Day 1, I think I've been reminded of the legacy and of the work that Mike did not only as a player, but also as a member of the community in Baltimore. "It's always been special and now I think it takes on even a new level. He's not going to be forgotten soon, that's for sure." Sam, your my closest broski and I love you like your part of my family. We'll keep her flame alive. RIP Serena. Baseball loses 2 beloved Hall of Famers in Weaver and Musial January 19, 2013 was a sad night for the baseball world as we lost 2 of the game's most beloved figures in Earl Weaver and Stan 'The Man' Musial. Earl died of an apparent heart attack at 2 in the morning while on an Orioles fantasy cruise in the Carribbean while Stan would pass peacefully in his sleep around 8 that night. Below are two separate stories on their passings. The colorful and occasionally outrageous man who believed three-run home runs, reliable up-the-middle defense and effective starting pitching were the essential ingredients of successful baseball has died. Earl Weaver, the Earl of Baltimore, passed away early Saturday morning while on an Orioles fantasy cruise in the Caribbean. Death, apparently caused by a heart attack, came at age 82 for the most successful manager in the history of the Orioles, a man who never played in the big leagues but directed several of the elite teams of the past 45 years. Weaver was a little man -- 5-foot-7 in spikes -- with a big big league resumé that earned him a place in the Hall of Fame in 1996. His Orioles teams -- he managed for no other club -- produced a .583 winning percentage and 1,480 victories, the 22nd highest total in history, in 17 seasons. They won four American League pennants and the 1970 World Series in a sequence of 11 seasons that began in 1969. His teams won six AL East championships, 219 games from 1969-70 and at least 100 games five times. "Earl Weaver was a brilliant baseball man, a true tactician in the dugout and one of the key figures in the rich history of the Baltimore Orioles, the club he led to four American League pennants and the 1970 World Series championship," Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement released by MLB. "Having known Earl throughout my entire career in the game, I have many fond memories of the Orioles and the Brewers squaring off as American League East rivals. Earl's managerial style proved visionary, as many people in the game adopted his strategy and techniques years later. "Earl was well known for being one of the game's most colorful characters with a memorable wit, but he was also amongst its most loyal. On behalf of Major League Baseball, I send my deepest condolences to his wife, Marianna, their family and all Orioles fans." His winning percentage is the ninth highest all-time and third highest among men who managed at least 2,500 games. And his victory total ranks third, behind Joe McCarthy and Jim Leyland, among managers who never played in the big leagues. Every manager whose teams produced more victories managed at least 288 more games than Weaver. "Earl Weaver stands alone as the greatest manager in the history of the Orioles organization and one of the greatest in the history of baseball," Orioles managing partner Peter Angelos said in a statement on Saturday. "This is a sad day for everyone who knew him and for all Orioles fans. Earl made his passion for the Orioles known both on and off the field. On behalf of the Orioles, I extend my condolences to his wife, Marianna, and to his family." Weaver's teams' successes did the most to distinguished him, of course. But his manner and personality made him significantly more prominent. He was bold, engaging, outspoken, irascible, caustic, confrontational and funny; not always a player's dream, but reporters appreciated him and flocked to his office or the dugout bench for pregame chats. Weaver could fill a notebook like few others. He filled one book of his own, entitled "It's What You Learn After You Know It All That Counts." Perfect! Notorious for smoking in the dugout, Weaver called inconsistent reliever Don Stanhouse "Full Pack," because, he said, he'd go through a pack any time Stanhouse pitched. Players called Stanhouse "Stan The Man Unusual," but that's another story. "Every time I don't smoke between innings, the opposition scores," was one of his theories. Weaver said Paul Blair, the Orioles' brilliant center fielder, was incapable of making a great catch. "If it's in the ballpark," he said, "Blair's there already waiting for it to come down." And he applauded the defense of gifted shortstop Mark Belanger with these words: "He doesn't wear a cup. That's confidence." One of Weaver's unforgettable lines came after outfielder Pat Kelly had invited him to Sunday chapel. Weaver declined to attend. Kelly asked, "Don't you want to walk with the Lord?" Weaver replied, "I'd rather walk with the bases loaded." But he did publicly thank the supreme being once for having inherited such fine talent -- Hall of Famers Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Jim Palmer and the likes of Boog Powell, Davey Johnson, Blair, Belanger and all those 20-game winners. "What comes to mind," Weaver said during his Hall of Fame induction speech, "is thank God those guys were there and thank God we won 100 games three years in a row so I could come back for a fourth. And thank God for the fourth that we won enough games for me to come back for the fifth ... and on to 17." Weaver also credited his bosses, general managers Hank Peters and Frank Cashen, for providing him so much talent. He said his teams had "deep depth." He chided his players -- occasionally Johnson, a future manager, and more often Palmer. When Weaver visited the mound to speak with Palmer, who is 6-foot-3, the pitcher would stand on the rubber, never yielding to his manager, and tower over him. Weaver occasionally tried to take over the higher ground. "There weren't any gray areas with Earl," the Baltimore Sun quoted Palmer as having said Saturday morning. "We had a love-hate relationship. Earl was going to tell you what he expected, and there wasn't a lot of room for error with him. Earl was about winning and that was what he did." Weaver routinely confronted -- and baited -- any man wearing an umpire's uniform. He kicked dirt at umpires before Billy Martin did and learned early to reverse his cap during arguments so nose-to-nose almost was the appropriate adjective for the confrontation. His conflicts with umpire Ron Luciano became legend. Weaver was ejected 97 times in his career. Some perspective: Bobby Cox managed for 29 seasons and was ejected 158 times. Twice Weaver was ejected during the lineup card exchange before the second games of doubleheaders. In one of those instances, Luciano ran him, having run him in the first game as well. Before Johnson brought managers into the computer age in 1984, Weaver had his own data system -- index cards -- which he famously relied on to remind him how particular pitchers and hitters fared against the Orioles. His use of pinch-hitters and platooning was quite effective, and he was fortunate enough to manage teams with extraordinary pitching. Weaver's teams produced one sub-.500 record; that came in 1986, his final season. He replaced Hank Bauer with 82 games remaining in the '68 season. The teams he managed in his first three full seasons won the AL pennant and averaged 106 victories. "When you discuss our game's motivational masters, Earl is a part of that conversation," said National Baseball Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson in a statement. "He was a proven leader in the dugout and loved being a Hall of Famer. Though small in stature, he was a giant as a manager, especially among Oriole fans, who lovingly referred to him as 'The Earl of Baltimore.'" Weaver retired after the 1982 season, a loss to the Brewers in his final game denying him another postseason appearance, then returned for the final 105 games in '85 and all of '86. The last season displeased him. "I wanted no part of losing," he said years later. "Why play if you can't beat the other guys more often than they beat you?" But the loss that unsettled him most was losing the 1969 World Series to the Mets. "In five games," he said in the late '90's' "They [beat us] in five games. And we were a very good team. It happened. I don't know how or why yet." And now he is gone. The game has lost one of its best managers and a premier character. Weaver left this one request, expressed years ago: "On my tombstone just write, 'The sorest loser that ever lived.'" Perfect. "Man-kind" mourns today. The primary baseball icon of the Midwest -- the soft-smiling, sweet-swinging, deferential and genial man known as "The Man" -- has passed. Stan Musial, known for his pretzel stance, prodigious production, princely personality and Hall of Fame harmonica, died on Saturday, surrounded by family at his home in Ladue, Mo., not far from St. Louis, where he made his mark as a batsman par excellence in the 1940s and '50s. Arguably the greatest left-handed hitter in National League history was 92. His stylish, spring-loaded stance and oft-repeated swing -- for years, Musial swung an invisible bat as his greeting or bow -- and the remarkable numbers they produced for the St. Louis Cardinals placed The Man among the most distinctive and elite players in baseball's long history. He won three National League Most Valuable Player Awards, three World Series, seven batting championships, the hearts of millions and the enduring nickname that was as unembellished as he was. Musial was marked by conspicuous modesty, unfailing propriety and utter lack of flamboyance, as sportscaster Bob Costas observed in a passage from ESPN's SportsCentury series: "He didn't hit a homer in his last at-bat; he hit a single. He didn't hit in 56 straight games. He married his high school sweetheart and stayed married to her, never married a Marilyn Monroe. He didn't play with the sheer joy and style that goes alongside Willie Mays' name. ... All Musial represents is more than two decades of sustained excellence and complete decency as a human being." Consistent with that description was the presentation of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Musial by President Obama at the White House on Feb. 15, 2011. An American civilian can receive no greater honor. MLB Commissioner Allan H. "Bud" Selig offered his condolences in a statement released shortly after Musial's death. "Major League Baseball has lost one of its true legends in Stan Musial, a Hall of Famer in every sense and a man who led a great American life. He was the heart and soul of the historic St. Louis Cardinals franchise for generations, and he served his country during World War II. A recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011, Stan's life embodies baseball's unparalleled history and why this game is the national pastime. "As remarkable as 'Stan the Man' was on the field, he was a true gentleman in life. All of Major League Baseball mourns his passing, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, admirers and all the fans of the Cardinals." Musial, father of three daughters and a son, was unpretentious, untroubled, friendly and folksy. The harmonica he played at Hall of Fame weekends and other public gatherings fit his image and humanized him for the masses who saw him as a Louisville Slugger deity. It was as though he copyrighted the greeting, "Whaddya say? Whaddya say? Whaddya say?" The words always came with a gentle smile. Hall of Fame chairman Jane Forbes Clark shared her thoughts on Musial's passing: "Stan was a favorite in Cooperstown, from his harmonica rendition of 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame' during Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies, to the reverence he commanded among other Hall of Fame members and all fans of the game. More than just a baseball hero, Stan was an American icon and we will very much miss him in Cooperstown." Former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa once called George Kissel, the late Cardinals coach of fundamentals and resident baseball genius, "The nicest person in the world." And after a moment's pause, he added, "Musial is only percentage points behind." Before the game expanded in the early '60s, the Midwest knew four teams, two in Chicago and two in St. Louis. And the Cardinals had the highest profile in the region, the residue of the Gashouse Gang, the Dean Brothers and Pepper Martin. They were the league powerhouse from 1942-46, fueled primarily by Man-power. Musial was to the Cardinals what Joe DiMaggio was to the Yankees and Ted Williams was to the Red Sox. Folks who kept their radios tuned to KMOX in those summers would argue whether Joe D. and Teddy Ballgame were to their respective teams what Musial was to his. The Man was their gold standard, although routinely attired in red. Stan Musial was the Cardinals' general manager in 1966 and in '67, when the team beat the Red Sox in the World Series. His business partner died during that season, prompting Musial to leave the game after the season. "The Man" was involved with a bank and a restaurant, among other things. This poem about Musial, written by Ogden Nash and published in 1955, is entitled "The Tycoon." If doubts about Musial existed after his first five full seasons -- during which he won two batting titles and two MVP Awards -- they were dispelled after his magnificent 1948 season. He led the National League in runs (135), hits (230), doubles (46), triples (18), RBIs (131), batting average (.376), slugging percentage (.702), on-base percentage (.450) and total bases (429) and finished second, by one to Ralph Kiner, with a career-high 39 home runs. A 40th was lost to a rainout. His total bases are the second most in history. Musial won his third MVP Award in 1948, though somehow he wasn't a unanimous choice. He even had a sacrifice bunt. Indeed, this remarkably accomplished batsman sacrificed 35 times in his career, more than DiMaggio and Williams combined. Or is the more remarkable figure a zero? Musial was ejected from none of the 3,026 games he played. Perhaps because of the predominance of East Coast media, Musial's prowess was somewhat obscured, first by DiMaggio and Williams in the '40s and by Mickey Mantle, Mays and Henry Aaron in the '50s and into the '60s. Moreover, when the team of the 20th century was elected in a vote of fans in 1999, Musial was one of five preposterous omissions -- Lefty Grove, Christy Mathewson, Warren Spahn and Honus Wagner were the others -- who were added to the team by a vote of a special committee. Having been assigned to first base in 35 percent of the games he started in his 22 seasons, Musial placed 11th among outfielders in the balloting. He was the first player to appear in more than 1,000 games at each of two positions. But when he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1969, The Man was named on 93.2 percent of the ballots cast, a percentage comparable to or greater than four of the other five -- Mantle (88.2), DiMaggio (88.8), Williams (93.4) and Mays (94.7). Hank Aaron received 97.8 percent of the vote when he was elected in 1982. And Musial was elected in his first year of eligibility, at a time when first-year election still was recognized as extra-special. Don't ever try to persuade a Cardinals disciple that Musial was something less than any other player. Even now, nearly a half-century after his retirement, he is held in the highest regard in St. Louis and its baseball suburbs. The Cardinals have numerous Hall of Famers on their all-time roster. Among the living are Bob Gibson, Ozzie Smith, Lou Brock, Red Schoendienst and Bruce Sutter. When they appeared together, Musial was routinely introduced last, an honor afforded DiMaggio with the Yankees and Williams with the Red Sox when they were alive. Mays, with the Giants, and Aaron, with the Braves, still are recognized last. Mays shared his thoughts after learning of Musial's death: "It is a very sad day for me. I knew Stan very well. He used to take care of me at All-Star Games, 24 of them. He was a true gentleman who understood the race thing and did all he could. Again, a true gentleman on and off the field -- I never heard anybody say a bad word about him, ever." Musial's rank in several career offensive categories is significantly closer to first despite missing the entire 1945 season to serve in the United States Navy. When he retired after the 1963 season, he shared or held 17 big league records and 29 National League records. He currently ranks in the top 10 in five career categories -- second in total bases (6,134), third in doubles (725), fourth in hits (3,630), sixth in RBIs (1,951) and ninth in runs (1,949). His .331 career batting average stands 30th. He received MVP votes in 18 seasons, finishing as the runner-up four times after winning his third award in 1948. He was second in the balloting in 1957, when at age 36, he won the NL batting title for the final time. He won his seventh title -- only Ty Cobb (11), Honus Wagner and Tony Gwynn (eight each) won more -- 14 years after his first. And he may well rank first in autographs given. Every year was a signature for The Man. He declined a request for his Stan Musial as often as he was ejected. Hence, the Man-made legend and the words at the base of the statue of Musial outside the third Busch Stadium in St. Louis: "Here stands baseball's perfect warrior. Here stands baseball's perfect knight." What better place for folks to meet? Even Albert Pujols, who might have eclipsed some of Musial's career totals with the Cardinals had he remained in shadow of the Arch, deferred to The Man. After "El Hombre" evolved as his nickname, Pujols requested that he not be so identified, even though his nickname was a complimentary nod to Musial. "I don't want to be called that," Pujols said in February 2010. "There is one man who gets that respect, and that's Stan Musial. He's The Man. He's The Man in St. Louis. And I know 'El Hombre' means 'The Man' in Spanish. But Stan is The Man. You can call me whatever else you want, but just don't call me 'El Hombre.'" Pujols had this to say on Twitter: "My prayers are with the Musial family tonight. I will cherish my friendship with Stan for a long as I live. Rest in Peace." The oddity of Musial's nickname is that it came from outside the Midwest, from Brooklyn, home of Dem Bums, of all places. Fans at Ebbets Field chanted "Here comes the man," each time Musial batted in a game on June 23, 1946. A column in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the following day noted the development, referred to Musial as The Man, and the nickname stuck. Musial had a more conversational nickname, Stash -- pronounced Stahsh. His father, a Polish immigrant, called him Stashu. His given name was Stanislaw Franciszek Musial. Stanley Frank Musial, as he became known, was born in 1920 in Donora, Pa., the same town that was the birthplace of another left-handed slugger, Ken Griffey Jr., 49 years later to the date, Nov. 21. Musial was a pitcher who could hit and enough of a basketball player that the University of Pittsburgh offered him a scholarship. He chose baseball. A shoulder injury in the summer of 1940 ended his pitching career and gave rise to a one that prompted Dodgers broadcast genius Vin Scully to say, "How good was Stan Musial? Good enough to take your breath away." "He could have hit .300 with a fountain pen," Joe Garagiola, Musial's Cardinals teammate for five years and later a baseball announcer, said. Warren Spahn, the most successful left-handed pitcher in Major League history, whose career ran concurrently with Musial's from 1942-63, had this to say about The Man: "Once Musial timed your fastball, your infielders were in jeopardy." So, too, were folks in the stands. Musial hit 12 home runs and batted .358 in 240 career at-bats against Spahn. The only player with more home runs against Spahn -- Mays with 18 -- batted right-handed. And then there was Carl Erskine, the self-effacing former Dodgers pitcher who fully grasped the basis for Musial's nickname. Though The Man batted .327 in 110 at-bats against him, Erskine said, "I've had pretty good success with Stan by throwing him my best pitch ... and then backing up third." Also below is a joint article paying tribute to both men. Stan Musial and Earl Weaver couldn't have been much different in some ways, or much more alike in others. What these two sides of baseball's coin of competitive passion definitely had in common is that they were true icons, not only for their franchises but for the game itself. The two Hall of Famers were unique fixtures in the game, and their passing on the same day Saturday dealt a double-dose of sadness to the sports world, perhaps not as much for lives cut short as out of reverence for lives devoted to baseball at the very highest level. Saturday became the first day in history a pair of Hall of Famers passed away on the same day, with word in the morning of former Orioles manager Weaver's death at age 82 followed in the evening with the announcement that Cardinals legend Musial had passed away at age 92. Previously, the shortest time span between the deaths of Hall of Famers was three days in 1971, when Heinie Manush's passing on May 12 was followed by Goose Goslin's death on May 15. The news Saturday made for a uniquely reflective January day for any baseball fan who understands the impact each of these men had on the game in very different ways -- different from each other, and different from anyone else. That they happened to pass away on the same day shouldn't rob one iota of respect and appreciation from either. Certainly, their legacies each are large enough to deserve appropriate commemoration. These were two of the brightest stars in their respective fields -- Musial's hitting and Weaver's managing. While Musial marched consistently through 22 stellar seasons and beyond with a smile on his face, a powerful bat and the heart of a champion, Weaver's fiery personality and scientific mind ahead of its time often provided epic dirt-disturbing explosions on the field. Talk about opposites: Nobody played more games without an ejection than Musial with 3,026, and no American League manager had more ejections than Weaver with 97. Both, however, were true geniuses at their craft for decades, even if their intensity manifested in different ways. For this one day, at least, it's hard to separate the two in the baseball mind's eye -- the visions of the Orioles' No. 4 dusting up a storm, and images of the Cardinals' famous No. 6 on the back of a corkscrew left-handed swing, punctuated with a big grin. As Saturday began, word circulated that Weaver had passed away, and that his death came suddenly, after an apparent heart attack on a cruise ship. Response from Baltimore, of course, was immediately forthcoming, heartfelt and mournful. And from the Commissioner's Office to Cooperstown to fan fests around the country, the response was the same. "Earl's managerial style proved visionary, as many people in the game adopted his strategy and techniques years later," Commissioner Bud Selig said of Weaver. Orioles chairman of the board and CEO Peter G. Angelos said in a statement released by the team, "This is a sad day for everyone who knew him and for all Orioles fans. Earl made his passion for the Orioles known both on and off the field." For all of baseball, the day became even more sad a little before 8 p.m. ET, when the Cardinals announced that Musial had died, his family by his side at his home in Ladue, Mo. This, too, was a particularly painful blow to one particular franchise and city -- the Cardinals and St. Louis. "We have lost the most beloved member of the Cardinals family," said team chairman William DeWitt Jr. But it was a loss felt deeply throughout baseball, too. Aside from being one of the very greatest hitters of all time with rarefied power and efficiency at the plate, "Stan The Man" was one of the most friendly and engaging ambassadors the game has ever seen. He was a proud one-team man who wore his Cardinals colors with a smile well into his later years -- always dapper in the bright red sport coat aboard a red golf cart at Busch Stadium and always charming with his harmonica tooting out "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" in Cooperstown. "Stan will be remembered in baseball annals as one of the pillars of our game, with his many successes on the diamond, the passion with which he played, and his engaging personality," National Baseball Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson said. And so it was with a deep sense of reverence Saturday that baseball said goodbye to not just one but two iconic figures, different snapshots of competitiveness but among the very best at their craft. Another thing these two men have in common: They not only excelled and stood out even among baseball's elite, but they also had the good fortune to have received recognition for that accomplishment. They were shown appreciation for their wisdom and greatness during their long lives, down to the final day. RIP Earl and Stan The Man, you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, James. You're in a better place. We'll always love and cherish the memories you gave us but we'll never forget you... November 27 1945 - December 31 2013 #ThereWillNeverBeAnother#OftenImitatedNeverDuplicated #RIP End Of A Chickbusting Era: Kaitlyn released, January 8th 2014 WWE lost one of its most marketable, beloved and underrated divas as former WWE Divas Champion Kaitlyn terminated her WWE contract on her own terms on January 8th, 2014. The move comes as a heavy blow to the Divas Division as her real-life best friend and current Divas Champion AJ Lee is not only without her best friend, but with one less credible opponent to defend her beloved championship against. Some speculate that Kaitlyn's departure will be a short one and will return within 90 days. I personally hope this is the case, because at 27, she's far too young to be finished wrestling. Thanks for 4 awesome years of Chickbusting Katie, hope to see you back again soon! #MissHerAlready #2010-2014 Hall Of Fame Robbery: Rafael Palmeiro dropped from future ballots In a shocking and infuriating development, Rafael Palmeiro, a beloved Orioles and Rangers slugger has dropped off future hall of fame ballots after recieving just 4.40% or 25 votes, falling shy of the 5% needed for future election. It's disheartening to see as Raffy had only one positive drug test at the very tailend of his career in 2005. It begs the question, where has being a great player stats-wise regardless of help gone? It makes this lifelong fan sick. Hopefully in 2026 when he's eligible for Veteran's Committee election, Raffy will earn his place in immortality. But for now, this lifelong fan will continue to wonder what's wrong with the MLB Hall of Fame and it's voting process. #Disgraceful #Injustice Bittersweet Valentine's Day For Angels & Phillies faithful: Jim Fregosi passes at 71 On a day usually reserved for joy and love, MLB lost a beloved manager and friend while Angels and Phillies fans lost a member of the extended family in former skipper Jim Fregosi. Taken from is the full tragic story. Jim Fregosi, a six-time All-Star shortstop who spent 53 years in professional baseball as a player, manager and scout, died early Friday morning, six days after suffering multiple strokes during a Major League Baseball alumni cruise. "He passed away at 2:36 a.m. [ET," Jim Fregosi Jr., the oldest son of the 71-year-old Fregosi, said. "Went in peace with no pain." At Fregosi's bedside when he passed away were his wife, Joni; daughters Nikki, Lexy and Jennifer; and sons Robert and Jim. Fregosi had been taken off life-support systems slightly more than 12 hours earlier. He was airlifted from the Cayman Islands to Miami on Wednesday night after doctors had stabilized his condition. Known for his strong scouting skills, Fregosi was a special assistant to the general manager for the Braves the past 14 seasons. Prior to that, he managed four teams -- the Angels, White Sox, Phillies and Blue Jays -- and was a player for 18 seasons, including 11 with the Angels. He also worked for the Cardinals and Giants during his long career. "We have lost a dear friend and a wonderful baseball man," Braves president John Schuerholz said. "The Atlanta Braves will truly miss Jim and we send our deepest condolences to his wife, Joni, his entire family and all of his many friends throughout baseball." Originally signed by the Red Sox in 1960, Fregosi broke into the Major Leagues in September 1961, at age 19, nine months after the Angels had taken him in the Expansion Draft. He became the Angels' starting shortstop in 1963 and was an American League All-Star the following season and then in five straight seasons from 1966-70. He won a Gold Glove in 1967 and led the league in triples in 1968 with 13. Fregosi batted .268 with 115 home runs and 546 RBIs in 1,429 games for the Los Angeles/California Angels. Part of one of the game's best double-play combinations, with three-time Gold Glove second baseman Bobby Knoop, Fregosi was the franchise's first star and was selected the No. 1 player in team history in a fan vote held in conjunction with baseball's 100th anniversary in 1969. His uniform No. 11 was retired in 1998. However, Fregosi said his biggest claim to fame was that he was the key player in one of the most famous trades in baseball history -- the one in December 1971 that sent him to the Mets for a group of players that included a hard-throwing young pitcher named Nolan Ryan. The Mets made Fregosi a third baseman, and his production fell, while Ryan, who had won only 29 games in his first four seasons, played another 22 seasons and finished with 5,714 strikeouts -- the all-time career record -- and 324 wins. The Mets traded Fregosi a year and a half later to the Rangers, for whom he played parts of five seasons. He finished his playing career with the Pirates in June 1978, and the next day, he was hired to manage the Angels, reuniting with longtime friend Gene Autry, the Angels' original owner. Fregosi managed the Angels to the 1979 American League West title, the first postseason appearance in the team's history. "The Angels organization joins the rest of the Major League Baseball community in mourning the loss today of Jim Fregosi," the team said in a release. "His contributions and passion for the Angels, both as a player and manager, have served as the standard for others within our organization through the years. Jim was one of Mr. Autry's all-time favorite players, and a man who remained in the hearts and memories of long-time Angel fans. "Jim's induction into the Angels Hall of Fame and the retiring of his uniform No. 11 were among the prouder moments in club history. His personality was infectious, his love of the game legendary, and his knowledge endless. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Joni, and members of the Fregosi family." Let go as manager midway through the 1981 season, Fregosi moved on to manage the White Sox from 1986-88, then the Phillies beginning early in 1991. He spent six years with the Phillies, leading them to the 1993 World Series, which they lost to the Blue Jays. That Phillies team, led by Darren Daulton, John Kruk, Lenny Dykstra, Curt Schilling and Mitch Williams, won 97 games and beat the Braves in six games in the National League Championship Series. It was the fifth pennant in the history of what was then a 111-year-old franchise. "Everyone in the Phillies organization is deeply saddened about the news of Jim's passing," Phillies president David Montgomery said. "We, and so many others in the game, have lost a dear friend. He'll be remembered for his vibrant personality, wisdom and love of the game. Our deepest sympathy is extended to his widow, Joni, daughters Nikki, Lexy and Jennifer and sons Robert and Jim." Fregosi, who finished his managerial career with the Blue Jays in 1999-2000, was an all-star shortstop and quarterback at Serra High School in San Mateo, Calif., and he set the California Interscholastic Federation broad jump record. His high school teammates included former big league third baseman Tim Cullen and Gary Hughes, currently a special assistant for the Red Sox who has also been the scouting director for the Marlins and Montreal Expos. Jim Fregosi Jr., who played in the Cardinals' Minor League system and has been a longtime scout, is currently a special assistant to Royals GM Dayton Moore. See you on the big field of dreams in the sky. We'll never forget you. #1942-2014 #YouWillBeMissed April 23 2014: A day to remember forever: AJ Lee & CM Punk welcome their kids into the world April 23rd 2014 will always be a special day in WWE history as sometime before 10 PM eastern time, the knowledge that former Divas Champion AJ Lee had delivered twins to the world in Riley Jane Brooks and her brother Phillip Jack Brooks Jr were welcomed into the world had been confirmed by AJ herself. Congratulations to AJ and Punk, may your beautiful children always be happy and loved, not to mention successful. Maybe we'll see them on Raw and Smackdown someday. #Legacy #SecondGenerationRebel #SecondGenerationGeekGoddess/CrazyChick April 30 2014: WWE cuts some of the future in Mason Ryan & Shaul Guerrero Okay, I know that first and foremost WWE is a business and to create future stars, you trim the expendables. But therein lies the problem that occurred last night with the releases of Mason Ryan and Shaul Guerrero. Several weeks before his firing, Ryan had been rumored to become a new member of The Shield had original plans went forward and Roman Reigns went on his own, which is only indicative of the blossoming star Ryan was becoming. As we all know, this didn't come to fruition as The Shield turned face and began feuding with a reunited Evolution. But still, if Ryan was being considered to join such a well-built stable, why cut him? This brings me to the matter of Raquel Diaz better known as Shaul Guerrero. She had been through WWE developmental once in 2012 and showed great promise but asked to be let go to focus on her college education being only 22 at the time. Fast-forward to late 2013, and Shaul is resigned for a second run in WWE. Sounds great right? She'll be promoted as a future Divas Champion and a crown jewel of women's wrestling? Not even close. After her return, she would appear exactly 2 times both at NXT live events on October 5 and December 20th respectively. She would make zero appearances on WWE NXT and not a single vignette was created for her as she was largely ignored until her release last night. Which begs this confused and frustrated WWE fan to ask just one question: If you were not going to utilize her on NXT TV in her second run, why bring her back to begin with? You had a second-generation diamond in the rough diva full of untapped potential at the very young age of just 23 with a legendary wrestling pedigree as part of the Guerrero family that you wasted twice, which again begs the question, how can you misuse such a talent? Why WWE? Why? #Angry&ConfusedWWEFan 2014: Orioles Magic Is Back - AL East Champions They said we could never win the East, not with the team we supposedly had. We were projected to finish dead last and had 8 to 1 odds on winning the division. But this team, their special. They defied all the odds on a division champion should be. September 16, 2014 will live on forever as the night Orioles Magic finally truly came back as the O's clinched the East with an 8-2 victory over the Blue Jays. Congratulations O's! Let's go to the World Series! O's Season Ends In Heartbreak Despite a magical ride and a surprising sweep of the Tigers, the O's Cinderella season ended in heartbreak as the Royals somehow swept them out of the ALCS back on October 15th in a 2-1 loss. Despite the heartbreak, the O's have showed their for real. We'll be back and stronger than ever in 2015!
