Updates: I've not written anything here for a while, have I? Fanfic writing is going steady and still something I very much enjoy doing when my job lets me have the time for it. At the moment I'm mostly working on a multi-chaptered story called Grasping Liquid, a tale about the Black Ravens I've been putting together for sometime. If you like those characters I hope that you'll give this story a chance. As well as that I have a few other one-shots I'll be posting here and there as I finish them. Hope you're all doing well and see you around!
Welcome to my FFN account! For the most part, I'm not much of a writer. I have a few drabbles about various characters or pairings I like, but that's about all. If you want serious writing then there are many other brilliant people out there to look at. However, I do tend to produce a lot of one-shots for more obscure pairings and concepts in any fandom I'm involved in, so if something takes your fancy feel free to sit down and have a read.
To most people online I'm known as SamCyberCat, Sam_CC or just Sam. Those first two are the names you can probably find me as on various websites. I'm a huge fan of various series, primarily the Professor Layton games, but also Archie/SatAM/Fleetway Sonic, My Little Pony and Yu-Gi-Oh DM/GX. For the Layton series my favourite character is Crow and my OTP is Crow/Badger, in Sonic I'm a big Sally Acorn fan and Sonic/Sally shipper, in Yu-Gi-Oh DM I'm really fond of Anzu Mazaki and the Yami/Seto pairing and in GX my loves are Ryo and Ryo/Fubuki. You can find out more details about my interests in the lists below.
Next is the part of the profile where I give you a bit more in-depth information about my views on fanfiction. Feel free to skip this part over if you don’t care for the waffle. If you do want to know more however, then read on.
When it comes to writing I mostly enjoy writing one-shots of romances or character development pieces. The characters and pairings in my favourites sections are far from the only ones that I will write about, there are many more that aren’t listed here. Sometimes I’ll even write characters I don’t particularly enjoy, just because getting into their heads is interesting.
As for reading fanfics I’ll admit that I don’t do nearly as much of this as I should. Not because I feel my work is better than what’s out there by any stretch of the imagination, but mostly due to time restrictions. In general, when I do find time to read, I prefer to focus on stories about concepts I like, such as PL NPCs, Alphonse Dalston, the Black Ravens, Clive Dove, Anzu Mazaki, Ryo Marufuji, Sally Acorn, Crow/Badger, Layton/Clive, Yuugi/Anzu, Ryo/Fubuki, etc. As for what I avoid that tends to be mostly pairings I don’t enjoy, such as Randall/Layton, Clive/Katia, Clive/Flora, Yami/Yuugi, Bakura/Ryou, Seto/Kisara, Yusuke/Fubuki, Ryo/Edo and Sonic/Amy. Just because I don’t enjoy these themes does not mean I have anything against those who write them, they’re just not for me personally.
Having said that I did come across some huge drama involving two fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh GX character Yusuke Fujiwara a few years ago. Because of the drama I avoid this character as a whole, though I have no disrespect to his fans. It is unlikely he will feature in my works dated after the drama occurred.
Now for the ‘policy on fanfics’ bit.
Fanfics that try to stick with canon and fanfics that go down a completely non-canon AU route are both respectable ways of writing, and I enjoy each of them. Writing fanfiction is something to do in a person’s free time, and something they do because they enjoy it. Under no circumstances do I think it is all right to insult an individual because of how they write. This is a website for people of all ages and skill levels, a fact that I think some people do forget. Some writers may write about themes that aren’t to others liking, but that doesn't give anyone a right to attack them for their work and hurt their feelings. Everyone deserves a chance. If you don’t like their work, it'd be best to either leave it alone or politely see if the author would be open to constructive criticism.
Alongside that, I don’t feel that everyone should be forced to write exactly as the canon of any series is. That’s what fanfiction is for, your own thoughts on a series. There may be parts of a series that an author wants to portray differently, and they are allowed to do this. Personally I try to write stories that fit in with the canon of whatever series I'm working with, but sometimes I will make changes to hopefully create an interesting AU.
Never will I post a wholly negative review. Sometimes I may leave crit in a review, but if the author doesn’t want to take my advice then that is their choice and doesn’t bother me. If I don’t like something at all then I won’t review it, that way works best for me personally.
But regardless of feeling people should be able to write what they want I do draw the line with bashing. Character bashing is inexcusable and shows disrespect to those who like the themes you’re bashing. Anzu Mazaki is Yuugi’s childhood friend who protected him from bullies; she is NOT a monster who beats up Yuugi for getting in the way of her being with Yami. Similar terms apply to Sally Acorn, Martha Jones, Rei Saotome, Kay Faraday and countless other bashed characters. There is a difference between writing a character going through hardship and outright beating up that character for your own amusement. The latter will stop me from reading your fanfics at all.
When it comes to character ‘names’ I’m not picky at all. Both sub and dub are fine for me, so I really don’t mind whether you use 'Clive', 'Klaus' 'K-sama' or 'Legal' (for examples referring to one character). Skills of a writer are not measured based on what they call the characters. Personally I tend to use the names from the version of the series I'm more familiar with. So for series like Professor Layton or Ace Attorney I'll probably use the names from the versions of the games released in the UK, while for Yu-Gi-Oh I tend to use the Japanese names unless otherwise stated. Also, my grammar is UK English because that is where I come from and is easiest for me to work with.
