Yay, I kept my promise! (Ok, ok, plus a few days.)
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the condolences and all the kind words you've showered me with.
Besides that, I also wanted to let those of you who're interested know what's happening with Luminescent. It's still giving me trouble, unfortunately, but I'm diligently working through it. Now that I've put up HTVL11, I hope to give it a little more focus, and have the sixth chapter done soon. It's actually quite a short chapter, so as soon as I can figure out how I want to pace it, the rest should come easily enough.
About my AO3: it's not fully up yet as posting a work takes a little more effort there than here. I can't just upload a document and have it do all the work for me, which is a bummer cause I'm so not in the mood for that. Either way, this is not really a priority for me; I'll get around to it at some point, though.
Oh, and in case you haven't noticed, I've moved my fic recommendations to pinboard. At some point in the last three years, yahoo and delicious unlinked and I didn't notice, so all my recs disappeared for a while. Sorry for anyone who was actually interested in that. Pinboard is much better than delicious anyway. Most of the recs I used to have on my delicious are on my pinboard now (minus some that I've changed my opinion on and no longer wish to recommend). I'm also in the process of gradually adding pretty much every fic I've ever loved (depending on how well I can remember and unearth them). This isn't limited to Harry Potter, but also includes such fandoms as Supernatural, Merlin, Suits, Sherlock, and even Skyfall. So keep a lookout for that.
SUNDAY, MAY 19TH
Hey, guys! Surprise, I'm alive! -_-;
I have a long-winded explanation as to why I've been MIA for 3 years (Really, has it been that long?), but for those of you who aren't interested, I just wanna say I'm ready and eager to get back to writing. And...I'm really sorry. There's no amount of apologies in the world that can make up for my neglect. I promised you all that chapter 10 would be updated quickly, and I lied. The one thing I regret is that.
But I'm happy to report that the next chapter is now up...finally (5/20: Now with a recap of events in previous chapters!). It's not all of what I cut off from chapter 9 because I'm trying to avoid doing super long chapters as much (though sometimes it can't be helped). The next chapter should be up shortly and will include the rest of what I cut, and then some.
As for Luminescent, I'm not sure about that one. It's been giving me pace problems, and I'm going to be rewriting all of chapter 6 to get a fresh start. I'll let you know when I'm closer to an update. Sorry; I know that one has had an even longer wait than HTVL.
For those of you who care for the why of my absence, it's still hard to talk about, but I'll try my best to tell the story:
In June (of 2010, omg), I was my best friend's matron of honor so I became very busy. Incidentally, that was also when I found out I was pregnant again. Immediately after that, my husband and I took a month-long vacation because we knew there was not going to be another viable time with another baby on the way. Our vacation was cut short when, in the beginning of August, we got word that my grandfather had gotten even sicker. He'd been battling with cancer for months before that point, and we'd known it would be only a matter of time before he succumbed to it. So did he because he asked to be taken back to India, where he would rather die in his hometown. My grandfather was like a second father to me, and I did not take the news very well.
Mid-August, most of my family flew to India with him. I stuck around longer than everyone else to help my grandma and grandpa out. When he died one morning in September, it just about devastated me. I was expecting it, but it still came as a shock. For two months after that, I did not feel like doing anything, much less giving a shit about my stories. It wasn't until the end of November that some semblance of life started coming back, but even then writing did not cross my mind.
I stayed in India for about the next two years to continue helping my grandma out, who was even worse off than I was. Around February of 2011, I felt like getting back to writing again, but I realized I left my laptop with any progress I'd made on HTVL back home when I tried to even update and I didn't have it saved anywhere else (something I've corrected now). Still, I couldn't even just write as I gave birth to my twins in April, and that got me busy all over again. The next year and a half was pretty much devoted to my family, though I did some writing here and there (and tried to work on developing a blog for my writings...that didn't work out so much). I got back to the States around the end of February 2012. My kids and I had to readjust to life in America all over again so that ate up some more months. I also went back to school to get my Masters, though it was only online as I did not have much time.
More than a year later, I finally feel like I've got a handle on everything. It's been a hectic three years (frankly, it felt much shorter to me), but I'm ready to get back to what I really love doing: writing. All this time, I didn't want to update because I felt that if I were to update, I should be able to follow it up with another and another, and I just wasn't able to do that. Now that I'm back in the swing of things, that is something I can deliver.
This is a longtime coming, and I hope it was worth the wait. It has been for me; I'm more committed than I was before and I happen to be of the opinion that my writing has improved (Seriously, when I go back and read, it makes me cringe). So thank you to every one of you who has stuck around with me. I'm surprised that I get reviews (900? Holy shit!) and PMs to this day. Some of you have even been worried something had happened to me, and I'm really sorry for worrying you. Just know that I'm good now.
You guys are really the best!
P.S.: Seems like a lot has happened while I've been gone. FFNet is cracking down on explicit stories, and I'm not sure how that's going to play out for mine, especially since the coming chapters will get a lot more explicit. I will begin posting on my AO3 as well to avoid this fate so if you're more interested in that, I'll have it set up soon.
Well, they're more imprinted on the skin than the way this image looks, but I couldn't quite manage to do that. Oh, well, close enough.
HOLLOW THUNDER, VITAL LIGHTNING LINKS
Now just imagine Hadrian like that except black and dark blue with gold scales and green eyes.
The white part is the crevice used to trace the wand.
The seating arrangement of the 7th year Slytherins & Ravenclaws in the DADA classroom. I imagine all the Slytherins would get into the N.E.W.T.S. class since it is defense. I have no clue if there are twenty desks in the room for real (and I am NOT following anything that shows up in those stupid films). Also not sure if the Patils are purebloods but I've always imagined them that way and I imagine the half-blood side of Su Li comes from her mother. Okay, I admit I just needed more last names that weren't so made up.
The hierarchy on the 7th year side of the Slytherin Table and the 7th year boys' dorm room. Note: Hadrian always changes where he sits on the table but I stuck him there because that's how it would look if he didn't interrupt the arrangement on the boys' side since all the boys come before the girls. I know, so sexist, but what can you do (their Quidditch team is like that too, remember). I also imagine Tom would never sit at the end--they'd be like his body guards.
I am 27 years old (aah! when did that happen?), married and a mother of five kids: nine-year-old identical twins, Armaan and Jameel, four-year-old Reyhan, and two-year-old fraternal twins Sarojin (boy) and Sonehri (girl; finally!). You might think that's a bit young for five kids but it's quite normal in my heritage. I was born in New Dehli, India, but only lived there for two years before my family moved to Virginia Beach. So it's understandable why my knowledge of my native tongue is rather sketchy. I get by, though. Ah! But my language prowess does not end there. Alongside my brilliant English and my grasping Hindi, I have an even lesser knowledge of French (which I took for three years before I got frustrated with my French/German-accented instructor; I could not, for the life of me, make heads or tails of what that woman was saying), and I can read and write Arabic, though I'm pants at speaking it (my mother is Arab).
It's been a life-long dream of mine to someday become a novelist. I knew I was meant to write since the first book that captivated me. My great love for reading was, impossibly, surpassed by my love for writing and I was smitten. However, I am the worst procrastinator so I'm stuck with a horrible combination of creativity that won't leave me alone and a tendency to put things off. So, though I have many, many ideas, I take a while to get them out. You have been warned. Read my works at your own peril.
All right, then, besides that charming synopsis of me, here's more getting to know me in the classical sense: through listing my favorites.
Favorite Books: Harry Potter (equals love)
Favorite Shows: Supernatural, Burn Notice, Suits, Merlin, Sherlock, The Good Wife, Dark Angel, White Collar, Psych, Covert Affairs, Dexter, The West Wing, The Big Bang Theory, The Vampire Diaries, How I Met Your Mother, Heroes (pre-season 4), The Mentalist, Castle, House, Veronica Mars (why'd they have to go and cancel such an awesome show; crap like Secret Life still persists, after all), Smallville, Kath & Kim, Law & Order SVU (occasionally, and definitely pre-season 13), mostly supernatural and action/thriller stuff
Favorite Manga/Anime: Fruits Basket, Hana Kimi, D.N. Angel, Vampire Knight, Death Note, Ranma 1/2, Ouran High School Host Club, Hetalia: Axis Powers, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Hana Yori Dango, MARS, W-Juliet, La Corda D'Oro, Kichiku Megane, Gakuen Heaven, all of Ayane Yamano's works (especially the Viewfinder Series and Crimson Spell ), and other yaoi stuff
Favorite Actors (in no particular order, except the first one): Salman Khan (Indian actor; epitome of gorgeous...don't let my husband know I said that), Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherjee, Karisma Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar (all Bollywood actors again), Jensen Ackles, Matt Damon, Daniel Craig, Clive Owen, Johnathan Rhys Meyers, Tom Welling, Chris Evans, Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Hugh Jackman, Robert Redford, Clint Eastwood, George Clooney, Steve Martin, Channing Tatum, Robert Downey Jr., Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, James Marsden, Sandra Bullock
Favorite Characters (in order; well, the first ten, at least): Harry Potter, Lord Voldemort/Tom Riddle, Severus Snape, Sirius Black, Albus Dumbledore, Lily Evans, Hermione Granger (when she's not being a nag), Ron Weasley (when he's not complaining about being a sidekick and is more clever & Ron), Regulus Black (go read Lightning on the Wave's Sacrifices Arc; you'd fall in love with him, too!), Lucius Malfoy, James Potter (when he's not an arse to Severus; Sirius can get away with it, but not you Mr. James Potter), Remus Lupin (when he's not being all boring and nice-nice and lets his werewolf side come out to play, rowr), Cedric Diggory (such a sweet, tragic character; love him), Blaise Zabini (he's just so cool), Luna Lovegood, Nymphadora Tonks, Fred and George Weasley, Bill Weasley (such an underdeveloped character), Alphard Black (as vain as it sounds, I fell in love with him while writing about him in HTVL, though I've read more on him since and like him even more) Evan Rosier (I don't know why. I just think it says something that he was able to duel so long with Moody and take his nose as well.), Antonin Dolohov (Don't you all have random favorite Death Eaters besides the obvious ones? Evan and Antonin are mine.), Daphne Greengrass (also another underdeveloped character; much better than that irritating Pansy, at any rate), Fabian & Gideon Prewett (They sounded like characters I would have loved had they not died.), Barty Crouch Jr. (another Death Eater favorite; plus he's a fascinating, complex character)
Least Favorite Characters: Pansy Parkinson (-shudder-), Dursleys ('nough said), Percy Weasley (Why couldn't he have died instead of Fred? He was standing right next to him!), Dolores Umbridge (is there anyone who likes her?), Bellatrix Lestrange (only occasionally, the other times I passionately dislike her; she did kill Sirius, and I cannot forgive that), Cho Chang (a.n.n.o.y.i.n.g.), Rita Skeeter (blgh), Peter Pettigrew (no brainer)
HP Fanfiction Pet Peeves:
This is not meant as an offense. I'm just writing my honest opinions (read: ramblings); and I finally want to let it all out.
1. Short/Petite Harry -- Sometimes I feel like the only one who pays attention to the details. Contrary to popular belief, Harry is not short and as tall as the average third year girl. In the books, it is said that he was short for his age when he was eleven. That, however, doesn't mean he stayed that way throughout his teen years. When Harry uses the Resurrection Stone in Deathly Hallows, it is said that he is exactly the same height as James (and take into account the fact that James was 21 when he died and Harry was 17-going-on-18 at the time). And, as we all know, James was far from abused and neglected as a child (which is the main explanation people use for Harry, though they seem to forget that Tom Riddle grew up in an orphanage and still was very tall for his age; I doubt magic much cares about that stuff). Not to mention, I believe he's described as a tall, thin man. Case in point, Harry is not short. If you know this and still write him as such...well, okay then. (Don't know why you would, but more power to ya.)
2. Submissive Harry -- I actually hate this just as much as I do the first one. I've always seen Harry as strong, independent, and damn stubborn. I cannot even stomach those stories where he's giggling every few sentences and is waiting around for his big, strong dominant partner to protect him. UGH! Has everyone suddenly forgotten who it is that has the hero complex? Harry should be doing the protecting if I have anything to say about it. Truth be told, I don't like any man who is cast as an overly submissive person (I don't even like women played out to be dependent; I'm a headstrong person, if you haven't noticed). If you're going to write about two gays, one who likes to cross-dress and act like a girl and one who gets off on that, then you should probably just stick to heterosexual pairings. 'Cause, last time I checked, two sufficiently manly gay guys together is pretty damn hot. Why are there less and less people writing that? I especially dislike it (with a fiery passion) when he's a sub to Draco. If there is any male in HP who I think is least manly, it's Draco Malfoy.
3. Re-Sorting -- Ugh, I really have nothing to say about this; it vilifies itself. If people want someone to be in a different House, just write a bloody AU. A re-Sorting is just about the most boring, unimaginative thing that could happen at Hogwarts. Overdramatic, to boot.
4. Harry's Friends Betraying Him For No Damn Reason, Except That The Author Doesn't Like Them -- Well, that one speaks for itself. It's just a story without much plot and I don't like to waste my time on those. If Harry's friends betray him (or he them), there should be a very good reason why. And I really hate that story that the Weasleys and Hermione had been getting paid by Dumbledore since the very beginning (from Harry's own vault, no less) to befriend Harry. WTF? Honestly, can't you think of a better reason? Much like the one above, if you want Harry to so badly only trust Slytherins, just make it so from the very beginning. Or think of a much cooler and feasible way to do it.
5. Harry-The-Greatest-Boyfriend-Ever Indulges Draco's-Spoiled-Brat-Act -- Okay, I'll admit, I've read this A LOT and I didn't always run for the hills. The point is, I don't like it, and there's nothing that makes me hate Draco more than his whiny, I-deserve-everything-I-so-much-as-look-at act. Admittedly, in the books Draco is a bit of a Daddy's boy, but I've never really liked CanonDraco all that much (hated him in HBP, in fact). The whole reason Harry and Draco are rivals is because Harry doesn't like Draco's egotistical attitude, and Draco doesn't like Harry because he got rejected. If you're going to write a story about an unlikely pairing, make it as likely as you possibly can. That Harry sticks around with Draco when he's insulting his friends and throwing around the word 'Mudblood' and being an all around pain in the ass, makes absolutely no sense to me. No one is that tolerant! And no one is that great of a boy/girlfriend (or stupid, for that matter). The thing that gets to me most, however, is that Draco only acts like that around Harry and his friends; he'd never pull that kind of thing around the Slytherins or, god forbid, his father and Snape. ...Does that make sense to anyone?
Favorite Pairings (mostly slash):
Harry Potter: Harry x Voldemort/Tom (my OTP), Harry x Severus (very close second), Harry x Sirius, Harry x Regulus, Harry x Cedric, Harry x Blaise, Harry x Lucius, Harry x Bill, Harry x Charlie, Harry x George, Harry x Fred, Harry x Daphne, Harry x Luna, Harry x Tonks, Harry x Ron (I feel like this list has suddenly expanded. I actually used to hate Harry/Ron, but it's suddenly on my favorites.)
Supernatural: Dean x Castiel (my other OTP; seriously, I die for these two and this show)
Merlin: Merlin x Arthur (my other, other OTP), Merlin x Lancelot, Merlin x Gwaine
Suits: Harvey x Mike (Harvey Specter is sooo hot)
The Vampire Diaries: Damon x Alaric
Least Favorite/Most Disgusted By:
Harry x Hermione, Harry x Neville (eww; Neville is so boring), Harry x Percy (what possessed anyone to write this?), Harry x Cho (gross; Harry can do better than that vapid bellyacher)
Severus x Hermione (soooo WRONG), Severus x Luna, Severus with any of the Hogwarts students (except Harry cause that's actually very hot) is pretty puke worthy
Voldemort/Tom x Ginny (fucking serious?), Voldemort/Tom x Hermione (avoid like the plague), Voldemort/Tom with anyone other than Harry, actually
Draco x all Weasleys (A Malfoy and a Weasley? C'mon! I'm a firm believer of their extreme incompatibility.), Draco x Hermione (I can't decide if I'm more disgusted by him with her or Ginny.), Draco x Pansy (especially when they're the antagonists because they're so frustrating together; plus I hate Pansy Parkinson and I think Draco can do better than that pug-nosed trollop. There I said it!)
Sam x Castiel (I do not get it; Cas belongs to Dean, dammit; always and forever)
Dean x Hendrickson (again, do not get)
Recommendations are being moved to pinboard.
Peek At My Stories:
Pairing: Harry Potter/Tom Riddle
Genre: Drama, Romance, Fantasy, Action/Adventure
Summary: Life after Voldemort is ideal and perfect for everyone except the one who made it possible. Unbelievably bored and unhappy, Harry performs a spell that will take him to an alternate universe where he can be happiest with Voldemort. Even he hadn't expected the outcomes or how the spell would misinterpret his words.
Length: 10/? chapters. It's going to be one of my longer ones, though. 50-60 chapters, maybe? --shrugs--
:slash; AU; Slytherin!Harry; Dark!Harry (barely):
Pairing: Harry Potter/Cedric Diggory
Genre: Romance, Drama, Mystery
Summary: Cedric just wants to know what the big fuss is about the new student but gets more than he bargained for: love...and a closely guarded secret of such great import that, if let out, could plunge the wizarding world into chaos.
Length: I don't know exactly how long, but I'm thinking it will be at least 50 chapters long. There are three parts and I've outlined Part I as twenty chapters. If the other parts follow that, then the story will be about 60 chapters. But either Part II or III is probably going to be shorter than the others so I'm guesstimating 50. I'll know for sure once I've finished outlining.
Part I's status: 5/20 chapters
:AU; slash; Powerful/Dark!Harry:
Pairing: Harry Potter/Lord Voldemort
Genre: Supernatural, Drama, Romance, Action/Adventure
Summary: As the Boy Who Lived, coming from a LARGE, well-known family, and being the only Potter in Slytherin, Harry attracts a lot of attention—and for numerous other reasons. One of the first people he catches the eye of is none other than the most powerful Dark Lord in a century.
Length: Very long and very detailed. The story chronicles Harry's school years, but it takes place mostly in his seventh. First-sixth years are mainly for background purposes, especially as the events in his seventh year won't make sense without it.
:AU; slash & some het; Dark!Harry; Slytherin!Harry; includes Roman/Greek gods and goddesses, but not in a religious way:
Ad Art Luna Et Tergum
Pairing: Harry Potter/Tom Riddle
Genre: Romance, Drama
Summary: The Potters are almost considered royalty and Harry can have anything he wants and needs at the snap of a finger. But all he really wants is the poor, struggling, beautiful, brilliant, prideful half-blood Tom Riddle.
Length: According to the outline I finally got around to finishing, it should not exceed 20 chapters. But, knowing me, that could be anywhere from 50K words to 100K or more. I really want to write this story, though, so I'm looking forward to getting around to it.
A Soldier of Fortune
Pairing: Harry Potter/Lord Voldemort
Genre:Drama, Action/Adventure, Mystery
Summary: Remiel is one of the most feared wizards in the world, second only to the Dark Lord himself. He has the ability to put to waste several skilled wizards in a matter of seconds, cause terror in the hearts of the most toughened criminals with just a whisper of his name, and his loyalty belongs only to the weight of gold.
Length: Fairly long as far as I can tell. I cannot wait to write this one...as soon as I've fleshed out more than a partial-plot.
:AU; slash & het; Powerful/Grey!Harry:
PLANNED BUT YET TO COME
Pairing: Harry Potter/Tom Riddle; Harry Potter/Lord Voldemort
Genre: Romance, Mystery, Drama
Summary: Fate isn't very keen on multiple chances; but when it does give it, you had better grasp it with both arms and legs, and you had better hope you don't bullocks it up. Someone forgot to clue the Dark Lord in on that.
Length: This is a three-shot. Probably not going to get longer than 30K words. This is one of the stories I most want to write.
Sun to Shade
Pairing: Harry Potter/Lord Voldemort
Genre: Drama, Romance, Action
Summary: On the surface, Tom Riddle was the perfect servant of the Potter Clan and bodyguard of their precious heir, Harry. In reality, he’s planned for years to take the clan—and Harry Potter—for himself. With the threat of ‘Lord Voldemort’ looming, the Potters have put more power in the hands of their Head of Security to keep them and their heir safe, and it’s only a matter of time before all of Tom’s plans come together to replace them as the Lord of the most powerful line in British wizarding history.
Length: Not too long (at least, I don't think so). I'm thinking about 60K words, tops. Another story I really want to write. Noticing a theme?
:AU; slash; Powerful!Harry:
I have many, many other story ideas (166 in total), but I'll put up 7 at a time, as that's my lucky number. I hope from this brief look and from my favorite/least favorite pairings list, you can tell my writing style. I doubt I'll ever write a story where Harry isn't one of the main characters or at least has a significant role in a story where one of my other top favorites (Voldemort/Tom, Severus, Sirius) is the main. I like a Harry that is intelligent, Slytherin, dark, etc; just stuff out of the ordinary. I doubt I will ever write any non-magic Harry Potter stories. That's not for sure, though, I might yet have a change of heart. I do write het stories, though not as much as slash. There's only so many female characters that interest me enough to write about as main pairings.
