Status Scenery: (pretty much) Complete, unless 3.33 tickles me

Status Silence: Complete

Status Science of Chakra: #01-03 online; on hiatus due to other projects, but I have rough ideas for #04 and #05 and maybe #09-ish; World-building (or chiseling of the existing world)

Well, this is me.

I'm an avid reader and occasional writer of fanfictions and also dabble in original work, though the worth of both is yet to be determined.
Well, I have written stories, and published them as well, mind you, but just not on fanfiction.net but rather another service. Why I tell you this? Just so you know I am not as inexperienced in my reviews as my no longer blank profile seems to suggest. Also, they are not exactly in English. Oh, I will translate one or two of them - the short ones of course - and in case I feel pretty light-headed and start writing in English I will publish it here. I just have still issues with my grasp of the lingua franca or rather my active use of it. Understanding works pretty shiny, I dare say.

Since I do it this way I assume others do it as well - I use the favourite story option to mark a work as either being worthwhile or me being in the process of reading it.

If by a stroke of luck you came upon the original version of Scenery, congratulations. I'll update it sometime. Also, the English version is slightly rehashed by comparison.

I recently thought of something. There was another story I wrote, once, that will be partially integrated into scenery. Now, don't you worry - I'm not planning on having any actual storyline in Scenery. The chapters I will integrate are all the odd ones out, those I wrote to distract me from the menial work continuing this other, bigger story had become. It was one chapter with many words (10k) followed by a short one, to lighten the mood. It took me some time to come to grips with it but in the later parts I merely wrote the story for the funny interludes. So I rewrote those and added them to the existing chapters of Scenery. Now I don't have any more chapters up my sleeve.

Silence is merely another ending to the original manga, Sundome. I liked the original but parts of me disagreed and made me dream up this altered version. It is one of the very few of my stories I liked.

The Applied Science of Chakra was a rabid idea given form. It might be already completed, but that's not likely. Like the description says, an inquisitive, scientific and most of all outsider's mind to the work of ninja applies some of her ideas to the physics-wrecking that is chakra. I expect to stay with regular chakra and it's shenanigans for now before looking at ninjutsu and genjutsu. And my take on canon and its timeline is the following: Butterflies everywhere. Naruto takes a left instead of a right? All purely random events will be essentially rerolled. The coin-toss that followed that turn and that was heads in canon? Equal chance for tails now. I'd probably do a coin toss myself, just to be sure.

Anyway, have a nice read!

The stories in my Favourites list are not necessarily ones I especially like but rather what I'm currently reading. But let me tell you something on those I do like (enough to write about).

Kyon: Big Damn Hero by Durandall
is a Haruhi-Suzumiya-story featuring Kyon as the eponymous protagonist. Haruhi is aware of her powers and accepts limiting them. Kyon becomes progressively more stuff of legends but the story never looses its funny moments. It is easy to read and the style feels very much like a mix of the anime and books. You don't need to have read the books to follow the story but it helps. I only have the anime to build on as a knowledge foundation (I only read excepts of one book) but I can follow it. What really impresses me is despite its sheer ridiculousness on some parts the course of events and characterization of persons is very comprehensible. The developments are logical and built on solid and reasonable extrapolations.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality by Less Wrong
The premise of this story is a Harry Potter brought up in a rational and scientific mindset. He has to deal with the utter disregard of magic for the laws of nature, physics and common sense. He is not amused. The great allure is its premise, really. Imagine an biologist watching an animagus transform his gestalt - biologists head explodes. Imagine a researcher applying the scientific method to a magical spell - hair pulling. This however is the background of the story. Since Less Wrong is very much scientifically and rationally minded he sees those instances and addresses them. But he's also written thousands of words in articles on his blog to explain this mindset. So he is very much aware of trappings of story telling and while pointing them out deals with them. He knows a protagonist much more powerful than canon deserves an equally much more powerful antagonist. Also, Harry is eleven years old and while somewhat a genius in certain aspects, he's socially a dunce. A dunce knowing all the theoretical background of teen social interactions but having not an inkling on how to apply this knowledge.

The Tales We Tell by Herr Wozzeck
My first comment after I watched District 9 was "This could get such an wonderful sequel or it could be mindcrushingly terrible. As much as I'd like to see it, it is probably better if there won't be any." This story kind of fulfils both parts of this comment. It is a continuation of a sort. After the events of the movie a mythologist infiltrates MNU (the PMC responsible for interactions with the aliens) and collects the oral legends and folklore of these strange people. He interacts with them as on a human level and sees the addiction on cat-food and everyday life in the newly settled District 10. It is a very interesting and intriguing concept and approach to storytelling, especially in fanfiction. The reason I stopped reading this story is its writing - or rather the style of writing. I disliked it enough to stop reading. It's simply not my taste. But please, before you disregard reading it, try one or two chapters. It not being written in my liking doesn't preclude it being in yours.

Waking Up by MZephyr
What do you suppose is the reason for the hijinks and oddities surrounding Ranma? This story tries an unconventional approach and follows it through to the end. Why characters behaved the way they did and what would happen if the reason of their odd behaviour was removed. How much is their regular behaviour changed by the weirdness and what is it exactly without it? Or simply put, I like this story and since it is rather short nothing should stop you from reading it.

To the Stars by Hieronym
Set about four hundred years after the original Madoka, TtS is very much mind-boggling. Humanity is in space, has artificial intelligence and essentially solved many of the problems plaguing humanity for the length of its existence. But only after it nearly wiped itself out basking in its own grandeur. This is the single best piece of world-building I have encountered on this site. I adore what Hieronym accomplished and would actually pay for new chapters, given the legal chance. If they ever publish a book of their own, I'll buy that one without thinking.

Lighting Up the Dark by Velorien reviews
AU inspired by an omake in HPMOR. 12 years ago, the Fourth Hokage gave his life to seal Kyubey, the Nine-Brained Demon Fox, into the infant Naruto. Now, the time has come for a smarter, more creative Naruto to take on a world in which quick thinking and a solid grasp of strategy are worth a dozen rare techniques, and a brilliant mind can challenge even the deepest darkness.
