I just stopped in the middle of reading a horribly cliche story. It had some of the most commonplace cliches of all-Evil!Dumbledore, EvilLackey!Snape, Crusader!Amelia Bones an so on. Usually i would just toss away the link and not give it another thought, but the story also had some great plot devices. Really good ones. A curse that caused a normal magical child to become a squib, a semi original pureblood law, they were really useful. Things like that make me so much more irritated that people who can come up with great hooks like that stick to cliche, one dimensional characters.
If you're going to write fanfics, why make them just like every other fanfic out there? Why not have some fun with the characters? I once read a plot bunny where Snape and Flitwick had their personalities exchanged while Snape was in school. The culprit was Flitwick and he refused to be sent back to a small body. The real Snape was a really nice, charms obsessed kid. There are even stories where McGonagall is the real mastermind trying to kill off men to turn the Wizarding World into a feminine paradise. Why not think outside the box? I love the fics i read most of the time, but i'm getting sick of the same old thing. Stagnation is what kills a fandom more than anything.
I no longer house most of what i wrote on this site. Mostly because it is smut, plan and simple. I haven't decided where to put it. I've gotten rid of my Aff account. So no luck there.
