DOCTOR/ROSE FOREVER WITH RAINBOWS IN THE SKY. Do I need to explain this? I don't think I do. If you don't ship Doctor/Rose, I'm not sure you have a soul. This ship is just about pure, unadulterated LOVE. It steals your heart away and unceremoniously stomps on it, douses it in gasoline, and lights it on fire. There will never be anything more tragic than Doomsday. This ship is about a 900 year old alien and a 19 year old who travel in time and space, and is yet one of the most relatable ships out there. I believe RTD said the tragedy of Doomsday was an echo of every loss you've ever had. This ship is about how it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.

What I ship:

ZUTARA FOR ALL THE AWARDS. Oh jesus I can't even express all my feels about these two. Bryke says all Zutarians will have doomed relationships. If by "doomed" you mean "based on mutual trust and a willingness to support your partner no matter what, knowing all their faults and loving them continuously, as well as sacrificing your life for them," then sure. HE TOOK A LIGHTNING BOLT TO THE CHEST FOR HER. Seriously, guys, I cannot stress this enough. A lighting bolt. To the chest. That should have been fatal. That's not something that can be hand-waved away. It makes me mad when fandom, even sometimes the shippers, reduces Zutara to sex appeal. Because to me, even though Zutara is steamy, its real appeal is that it gives hope to the lost. It's about redemption and forgiveness and unconditional love. It's about respect. It's about honor. It's about trust. It's about sacrifice. It's about bridging the gap and finding common ground. And I think that's beautiful.

Why I don't ship Kataang: Because the idea of Katara having romantic feelings for Aang doesn't make logical sense. He is too young for her in the sense he is too emotionally immature. She treats him like he's her son, or young brother. She feels like his life is her responsibility, hers to protect. And that is a beautiful thing, a fascinating relationship that makes me happy inside. And it is natural that he would develop a crush on her, it's endearing. It stops being endearing when he acts like he owns Katara, like she should be with him just because he loves her, regardless of her feelings.

They have terrible communication. They kiss, like, THREE TIMES, and don't speak. about. it. at. all. Katara's reactions to the kisses range from reluctance to embarrassment to anger. She plays dumb when he tries to express his feelings. A lot of fics depict Katara as oblivious, both to Aang's and Zuko's feelings. I like to give her more credit. I think Katara sees and recognizes Aang's crush, and is just hoping and wishing really hard that it will go away. She hates confrontation and hates yelling or hurting Aang's feelings. So she tries to let him down easy at the theatre at Ember Island, but is a bit too vague. And then suddenly the next scene they have alone together is after the final battle and they are making out.

Um. What?

With Legend of Korra existing and everything, I'd come accustomed to accepting Kataang as truly canon, but in a distant way. I can accept it if I don't think about it too hard and ignore how it doesn't make logical sense.

Why I don't ship Maiko: Well, this is a bit untrue. I do ship Maiko. They are so goddamned cute together. They are gloomy and it's so hilarious. They genuinely care about each other and I like to think that Zuko thinks Mai is one of the few things from his childhood that was good and didn't totally suck. However, Maiko just can't last in my opinion. For one, probably the thing Mai would hate most in the world would to be Fire Lady. Seriously, she hates Fire Nation politics and fuckery and I honestly think Mai would never go for a lifetime of that if she had the choice.

Two, their relationship is woefully uneven in the sense Mai is giving it all she has and Zuko...is not. Let's talk about the Boiling Rock. Zuko locks her in prison, LEAVES HER BEHIND IN PRISON, and he hates doing it. He really does. It kills him inside, but he still does it. Because they are enemies, and because his found a new life and new cause and a new mission that is more important than anything he once felt. Mai doesn't really fit in with his new life, either. And Mai sees how much he's changed, and while she doesn't seem to like it or agree with it, she FUCKING SAVES HIS LIFE AND TURNS ON AZULA. Because she loves him, and she knows he is being such a jerk to her, but she helps him. Because she knows that now Zuko has finally found his path, and she wants to help him any way she can. And she does this by being a total badass. HATERS TO THE LEFT, MAI IS AND WILL FOREVER BE A BETTER EX GIRLFRIEND AND HUMAN BEING THAN ALL OF YOU.

Zuko realizes this too, and I swear he feels guilty mostly because he just doesn't care as deeply. He loves her, admires her and respects her -- but doesn't deeply love her, doesn't give it all like she does. Ahem, but he does give his life for Katara a couple episodes later. I'll let you come to your own conclusions about that.

Next time we see Mai, she surprises Zuko because HE FORGOT SHE WAS IN PRISON. Oh god. Zuko, what are you. How do you forget stuff like that. There is no excuse. Mai is too good for you. Ditch him, Mai. He's obviously not that into you. Mai deserves better.

I love the Gaang so much I can hardly stand it. Azula is a terrifying and wonderfully written character. Suki and Mai win at life. The show does a wonderful job at challenging the traditional tropes prevalent in depictions of disabled people. The show is a feminist show. The canon ships have so many holes in the hull it's a bit ridiculous. If I was a bender, I'd be a fire bender.

THE HUNGER GAMES

What I ship:

PEETA/KATNISS, oh god this two. There love is simple but their situation is more dangerous and complex than previously thought possible. They fight a war and then spend the rest of their lives support each other through both of their PTSD. They commemorate the dead and immortalize them in a book and then go on to have what are probably amazingly adorable babies. This ship is about hope and the light at the end of the tunnel, about bread and life and spring and coming home at last. This ship challenges the traditional gender roles and what as seen as manly or feminine. This ship is about selflessness. I love it.

Why I don't ship Gale/Katniss: Ugh, Gale. Sorry Gale, there is nothing you can do that will make me not hate you. I mean, Gale is not all bad. He does amazing and brave and good things. He feeds his family and Katniss' and supports Katniss and saves Peeta for her. This is amazing. But god, he is such a jerk. I don't see how people like the Katniss/Gale dynamic. It just seems cold and clinical and cruel and mean. And then it has a squicky implications that because Gale has loved her for a long time, because he is her best friend and does so many things for her, that Katniss should love him. She should be obligated to.

Fuck no. God, just no. There's a meme about Gale that goes something like: Friendzoned? Try cousinzoned. First, lol. Second, let me make this very clear: JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE SUPER NICE TO A GIRL OR WHATEVER AND ARE HER BEST FRIEND, DOESN'T MEAN SHE SHOULD LOVE YOU AND YOU SHOULD ACT LIKE A DICK WHEN SHE LOVES SOMEONE ELSE. Katniss did not betray Gale. Katniss did not lead Gale on. Katniss did nothing wrong until she encouraged his romantic behavior (ie. kissing him and shit) when obviously she never felt that away about him, really. Sure, she thought Gale was attractive at times. She wondered if they were romantic. But she didn't seek him out until she couldn't be with Peeta and intended to die. So, there's that.

Also the fact I dislike Gale as person. Just, all of the hunting stuff and using your enemy's compassion as a weapon. You are just a gross person Gale. I hope post-Mockingjay you find someone who kicks your ass into shape so you can lead a better life.

I actually like the idea of ties being permanently severed between Katniss and Gale after Mockingjay. I just feel like it would be best for both of them. I like the idea of them separating and recovering from the war and becoming better, healthier people. But not in each other's company.

Gale/Katniss/Peeta is not the trio of the Hunger Games. Haymitch/Katniss/Peeta is the trio of the Hunger Games. Peeniss is a far superior ship name than Everlark. I did not hate Mockingjay. Suzanne Collins is not a terrible person to killing off characters or not making their deaths important enough. War is war. People die, more often than not with grace or preamble or ceremony.

RON/HERMIONE. There are no arguments against this ship. It is one of the best written romances ever. Like, both characters have arcs and development and only get together once they are both emotionally ready. I can't even express how much I love them. They are both flawed people, but they complement each other, and it is glorious.

I am not a fan of Snape. I can only barely muster up some sympathy for movie!Snape, and that is probably only because of Alan Rickman's acting. Snape's love was creepy and obsessive. James Potter was a marvelous man. Harry Potter was a marvelous man. Sirius was a bad influence on Harry. I don't see Dramione, and hate it when people compare it to Zutara. Harmony basically dismisses Ron's existence and I hate that. I love Dumbledore with all my heart, and know his actions were for the greater good. Harry is a hero, but Neville is a leader. Ginny is not a slut. Ginny is a badass motherfucker. Sucks to suck, fandom. Hagrid has a special place in my heart.
