1. How about a brief introduction of yourself?
I'm Butterfly, or Zoe and I'm a fanfiction writer. On FF.net I'm know as 'Butterfly in a Huricane', devaintart knows me as 'MaelstormsButterfly'. I currently do quite a bit of wig styling and I'm working on my cosplay and photography skills. :)
I'm also rather into RP-ing right now (that's Role-play for the non-nerds out there), whether it's live action of just sitting down with a character sheet and some dice, I find it to be an awful lot of fun. The brilliant society at my uni helps a lot with fulfilling that particular love, as do the wonderful friends I've found over there.
2. Fabulous! And what got you into fanfiction to begin with?
Doctor Who... My first fanfic was something called 'In His Eyes' where I fell into the 'over-complicated OC' trap which I didn't know existed at that point. *sigh* that poor story never got past the second chapter... Thank the gods.
3. I see, so what kind of fanfiction do you like to write?
I don't really write anything with a plot right now. I prefer short pieces or collections of oneshots. Don't get me wrong, I have a few ideas for 'fearmyplot' fanfics, but I prefer the poignancy oneshots can give you. Besides, within a one shot there's more you can get away with. It's like the cause and effect theory, but you don't have to write the effect which, in my cause, would be extremely mushy and would have more fluff than under my sisters bed and trust me, there's a lot down there .
4. Do you tend to write the same pairings/characters? Or are you a fandom whore?
I have an entire list of pairings from various fandoms I prefer which you guys are gonna get treated to. . The ones in Bold are the ones I've actually written for.
Puzzleshipping- YamixYuugi (face it, it's practically canon and sooooo cute.)
As you've probably guessed, this fandom is yaoi fangirl's little piece of heaven.
Akuroku- AxelxRoxas (These two are practically the anime version of Romeo and Juliet, (despite the fact KH is a game. ) and we all know the praise Shakespeare's tale has recieved for being the 'greatest love story ever told'. Probably the most famous yaoi pairing ever, closely followed by...)
There are more, I just don't like them all that much. There's a reason the Organisation is normally shortened to 'Orgy'
Ouran High School Host Club
HikaruxKaoru- Twincest... *sigh* But it's too damn cute.
SasuNaru- If you can't spot this pairing, you are actually blind
Merthur/Arlin- Merlin and Arthur. Again, if you can't see this pairing, you're blind, or you've never seen the show
Full Metal Alchemist
Anyone detecting the yaoi fangirl-ness coming through there??? However, I do consider myself an 'elite' fangirl. I.e. While I would love to go to yaoi-con, I woudn't die of a nosebleed, I don't write smut and I make an attempt at spelling...
5. What is your most popular fanfic and why do you think people like it so?
Currently, my most popular fanfic is a series of collabarative oneshots called 'Iridescent' for the Merlin fandom on FF.net. It's under the pen-name 'Artemis and Iris'. I reckon the reason people like it is because we do actually sit down to think about the different chapters and come up with about 6 ideas before picking the best one. We also take requests and I genuinely try my hardest to meet people's expectations or exceed them as the case may be.
6. Forget other people, what is the fanfic you've written that you're most proud of?
Fanfiction-wise, the piece I'm most proud of hasn't came out yet. Second place is shared by 'Of Carpeted Floors and Parrots', 'Yoi Yume o, Yuugi', 'What's in a Name', 'Beauty' and 'Courage' from Asyre ABC's and 'My Tourniquet'. While the rest can be found on this profile, My Tourniquet is a Yu-Gi-Oh! bronzeshipping piece I wrote whilst in hospital with a kidney infection. Asyre ABC's is a series of oneshots I'm doing based on the immense RP 'Tales From Asyre'. Fun times...
7. Do you find writing easy? Hard? What are the most difficult aspects of writing you struggle with?
Writer's Block... Less said the better, truth be told. We may anger the inspiration gods and then dear heavens help us all...
8. Write a few sentences or so of your favorite pairing or character.
If I just take the one from a few fandoms is that okay??? I have too many favourite ones to be perfectly honest.
Doctor Who- DoctorxMaster
Yu-Gi-Oh! (Yuugiou)- Flareshipping
Yes, that is a YGOTAS series reference, but, let's face it, LK is awesome
Kingdom Hearts- SoRiku
(Yeah, they're the main ones... )
9. Are there any fanfiction trends/clichés you can't stand or are just sick of?
Vampires and werewolf fanfics- Ever since Twilight, those two mythological beasties just make me think of necrophilia and beastiality. They suddenly don't hold the same fascination from me that they used to.
10. Are you guilty of any of the fanfiction trends/clichés you now hate? Or any other ones?
Undeveloped OC's. I fell into that trap once as a noob and hope to avoid it in the future
11. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Do you still like/participate in it?
Doctor Who was my first fandom. Because if you're english, you must love Doctor who... apparently.
12. Name your OTPs or most frequently written pairings/characters and explain what it is about them you love to write.
Oh jeez... Can I just say how much I hate this question?
DoctorxMaster- I love the complexity of the relationship and, if you squint, you can see traces of it in the canon.
ThetaxKoishei- This and the one above are pretty similar, but I see them as different due to in Koishei massive personality shift.
Puzzleshipping- Is too danged cute for it's own good. Apart from the fact it's naricism, practically twincest and yaoi, both characters are so remarkably close to each other you just can't help but think of the term 'soulmates' when this pairing comes to mind. Not even 5000 years can keep them apart.
LxLight- Again with the angst. I also enjoy seeing how people play on the way L and Light see the world. "There's a fine line between genius and insanity" and both of them are sitting right on it.
Tendershipping- Yami and hikari pairing... See 'Puzzleshipping'
Bronzeshipping- Another Yami and Hikari pairing for the fangirl's paradise. However, this relationship borders on the abusive in a lot of the fanon. It's... interesting...
MarVex/ 411- This is another pairing which has enchanted me by the different viewpoints people take on it. Some take the 'I hate you so much I love you' approach while others take the 'Marluxa's a pervert and Vexen's a prude' approah. Personally, I prefer the one which lies in between. Subtle attraction to something completely exotic which grows. Opposites do attract after all and what's more opposite than ice, the frozen and unfeeling material it is, and flowers, the warm, living, breathing source of delight for so many and used to protray love in hundreds of different cultures?.(I suppose Fire and Water would count here, but Demy belongs with Zexy and Axel belongs to Roxas )
ToshxOwen- Cute and, I hate to say it, the fans saw it coming folks. Their exit from the series was simply phenomenal and I have another crying session which I can chalk up to the BBC
Thiefshipping- Practically canon, two bishonen characters which are entirely too good looking for their own good.
13. What would you call your writing "style"?
Different. With every piece I write it varies slightly. Other people may not see the differences I do. I notice reoccurring patterns in my language that no-one else seems to. They do say people see their own work different from others so I rely on Raura-chan, Nex and Lycan-Song to tell me if there's anything actually wrong with my pieces.
14. Do you read other people's fanfics? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most?
Mostly I'm on the Kingdom Hearts fandom right now, but I also visit Yu-Gi-Oh! for the fluff, Death Note for the great quality of fics, Ouran High School Host Club for the fanservice.
15. Name one thing you'd LOVE to write, but have been too afraid or shy to do.
I have never been able to write a lemon. Ever. Don't get me wrong,I've tried and currently have severe respect for those who can write good lemons, but something tells me that I should stick to keeping my stuff above the waist .
16. Do you have trouble taking criticism? Or worse yet, do you have the dreaded bloated ego?
I actually enjoy taking criticism. I'm British, and apparently we aren't happy until we find a fault with something, so I suspect the same thing applies to other people. Seriously folks, if there's something wrong with my stuff, tell me. Writing is supposed to make both sides happy, not just the writer.
17. When you write, is there anything that helps? Music? Quiet room?
Umm... Oddly I actually write best/quickest in a room where something is going on. Incontrovertible was written during a chemistry lesson and the beginnings of my English classes have seen me re-drafting certain pieces. 18. What inspires you?
18. What inspires you?
Anything and everything. I've found story ideas in poems, only hearing one half of a conversation (although I don't think anyone should try that if either Lycan-Song or myself are in said conversation. ) music is a frequent source, but mostly random little thoughts and even other people inspire me.
19. Lastly, how would you sum up your fanfiction experiences and yourself as a writer?
Fanfiction is what got me into writing properly in the first place and the positive reviews I've been recieving gave me the courage to send a Creative Writing Portfolio away to a university. I currently have an offer for that course without an interview. Writing, I believe, also helped me through a pretty rough patch in my life. It, combined with the fantabalous friends I currently have and hope never to lose, brought me out of the 'emo' phase and into society. Further, some of the different fanfics I've been reading have been absolutely brilliant and made me question how I see things.
Me as a writer... Hmm... I write what I think and, whilst I'm not the best writer around, I do aim to become better at it. I know I'll never be able to mimick the great authors out there such as Eoin Colfer, Terry Pratchett, Gareth Nix, C.S. Lewis or J.K Rowling, but I hope that at some point one of my pieces will either help someone along or provide the 'hug-nee' reaction as Lycan refers to it. Catharsis is something we need more of in the world. I don't aim to become brilliant, because brilliant people, unless they're outstanding, tend to burn out, which is something I'd rather not do.
On the plus side someone has recently told me that they cried over something I'd written... Out of emotion, not how bad it was, so I may be on the right tracks
Come get me if you need me, though most people normally don't I'm normally found at The Box, but, if that fails try geniecloud *at* hotmail *dot* co *dot* uk
