THINGS WE NEED TO CONSIDER ABOUT THE FUTURE OF SASUSAKU MONTH...
By the way am I the only one unimpressed with SasuSaku Month 2015?
Firstly the rules are too restrictive. Why the fuck should Sarada's existence be respected just because she is canon, particularly when Sasuke has done sweet fuck all as a husband and father for over a decade? Are we supposed to respect Sasuke's abysmal failure to his family just because that is canon too? You also can't reasonably hysterically scream "BUT THAT's NOT CANON" to a writer when you almost have a fucking week dedicated to AU stories involving fucking boarding schools and social media. For God's sake one of the reasons there is so much fanfiction is because so much of the Naruto canon is crap. Kishimoto isn't even hiding the fact that the whole Sarada storyline is there to simply troll fans!
Secondly SasuSaku month leads to poorer fanfiction. This is not just because SasuSaku month promotes cringe worthy AU stories involving high school and social media. By posting prompts less than a month before SasuSaku month, writers have less time to both write longer stories and less time to go over and edit and proofread their stories. What this predictably does is lead to a significant increase in poorly written SasuSaku one-shots around July, many of which wouldn't have enough substance to turn into a story in the first place. There is no reason that prompts for SasuSaku month couldn't have been put up in August last year. Absolutely none, which just shows the lack of seriousness the event organizers have about quality fanfics.
Finally the prompts are crap. Despite claiming that the prompts "fuel creativity" I doubt that any riveting fanfics are going to be written about the theme "baby shoes," which is why this prompt will likely lead to a bunch of one-shots rather than chapter fics. If the creators of SasuSaku really wanted to fuel creativity they would come up with better prompts that would promote more complex story lines, such as martial law, kekkei tota, Iwa, Sand Daimyo, Danzo, Minato's teammates, Tokubetsu Jonin etc.
Now more than ever that Naruto has come to a close, new, complex fanfics exploing novel ideas need to be encouraged if the Naruto fanfic community is to remain strong. Stories like Monomoth, The Curse, Hokage by Necessity and many more are good examples of stories that do this.
When SasuSaku comes to a close at the the end of July the SasuSaku community would be much better served by though provoking prompts coming out in August 2016 for a SasuSaku year in 2017 (when people can post any day they are ready) than prompts coming out for SasuSaku month 2016 in June 2016. It is past time for the nature of SasuSaku Month to change.
