Herein find heart-wrenching, uncompromising beauty; two lovers, three lives, seven sacrifices, one family.
She traveled alone out of her mind’s darkness; he fled a brightness burned into his skin. Eternally matched, they found the question that would break them.
He waited in sparse shadows for the only answer, his one chance to escape his bonds. One vanished; another followed; they found bitter joy from the surrender of others.
Alice, Jasper, Edward immured, punished, released, redeemed.
Thank you BellaStjerne for your inspiring and beautiful thoughts and Viola Cornuta for bringing this all together.

Because she says it so much more precisely and insightfully than I ever could, here's a summary of Comeuppance from BellaStjerne (a fabulous woman who met me on every step of this journey):
Comeuppance is the first AH/AU story by Goldenmeadow. In this tale we find a Bella who has never believed that she deserves to be with Edward. At this point in her desperate quite perfect life, her marriage seems a fluke, a wonderful mistake but a mistake nonetheless, a ticking bomb waiting to explode demolishing everything in its wake. All that is needed is a lighted fuse which comes in the form of Jacob, the young and handsome neighbor. This story is about Bella's comeuppance. It's about passion, love, hate, pain, betrayal, joy, sorrow, doubt. It's about choices and consequences. It's about finding out if destruction inevitably begets destruction or if it is possible to find redemption through imperfect love.
The Bella and Edward depicted here are full of glorious human frailties. Bella's thoughtless actions and Edward's equally heedless reactions, force them to come to grips with the perils of placing the undue burden of perfection on each other and the fallacy traps that feelings of unworthiness have created in their relationship. And it forces us to confront the disquieting reality that we all have it in ourselves to exhibit as much goodness as cruelty given the right set of circumstances. It also presents us with the notion that it is not our mistakes that define us, but the choices we make in their aftermath. Choices such as the painful surrendering of our unrealistic notions of how life should be and the embracing of flaws and messiness as part of our reality. For in the end, the masterpieces are not the flawless ones, but the ones that even in the midst of glaring imperfections look beautiful.
Without a doubt, Goldenmeadow has written a gripping, gut-wrenching story. She has the ability to captivate the reader by the sheer force of her indelibly vivid descriptions. Descriptions that prove that, contrary to popular belief, sometimes a thousand words are indeed worth more than a picture. Her mastery and luscious use of the language are a welcomed departure from the triteness so often seen in fanfiction. She also has a rare gift. She can pull as much angst as Kafka while displaying a wicked sense of humor similar to Pratchett.
If you are looking for a fairytale this is not it. There are no deus ex machina exploits wrapping up everything in a pretty bow. But don't be put off or deceived by that. You may have your happily ever after after all. Besides, Comeuppance is one of the smartest and funniest stories around. Don't miss out on it!
