Willabeth vs. Sparrabeth
As someone who's been a part of the Pirates of the Caribbean fandom for years, I'm very aware of the on-going debate about who should Elizabeth have ended up with: William Turner or Captain Jack Sparrow. Because I mainly read POTC fan fiction (though I enjoy other fandoms), I decided to establish which side of the argument I'm on. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is Willabeth. To be honest, I don't mind that some POTC fans are in love with Sparrabeth instead of Willabeth. I personally feel like whichever pairing makes you the most happy, you should read and/or write about it as much as you want. However, I feel like I need to establish my reasoning behind my support for Willabeth, mainly because I hate it when people choose a side without a good explanation. So here it is: I have always believed that Will and Elizabeth should be together. At the age of 13, when I first saw POTC: COTBP, I have always thought that they will--and should--be together, even before I barely finished watching the first scene. Here's why: Will had always been supportive of Elizabeth and always allowed her to be who she wanted to be, not what someone (or society) told her to be. I also have never seen Will degrade her because she's a woman; in fact, he allowed her to make her own choices and allowed her to be the pirate she is despite the view on women at the time and despite others wanting to hold her back for a variety of reasons (i.e. - Gibbs' superstitious beliefs on women on ships). I also love their story because it makes the most sense to me: two best friends grow up together and fall in love. Their friendship makes a good, strong foundation for their romantic relationship, and I'm not left feeling like their story is rushed (i.e. - Philip and Syrena from the fourth film, although I respect those who love this couple). This leads to my next point: Will and Elizabeth love each other. At any point of the films, Elizabeth could have chosen to accept her lustful feelings for Jack and push Will away. Instead, Will chose to forgive Elizabeth, he chose her over his father, and she chose to marry him (and looked absolutely delighted to do so). Sparrabeth fans argue about the chemistry between Jack and Elizabeth during the second movie, but personally, all I saw was two people pushing each other's buttons. I will admit that Jack and Elizabeth were indeed flirting with each other, but unlike Sparrabeth fans, I believe Elizabeth made her true feelings about Jack known the moment she chose to chain him to the mast (which was further confirmed when Elizabeth chose to marry Will, had his child, and eventually broke the ten-year curse because she waited for him). I firmly believe that Jack and Elizabeth will always remain as good friends, but they could never last in a loving relationship or marriage.
To touch briefly on other pairings I've seen: I never did see a relationship between Elizabeth and Norrington except for friendship, a big brother-little sister kind. I never supported (and never will) Will/OC or Elizabeth/OC, mostly because these kind of stories tend to be poorly written and makes the characters OOC (as can other Willabeth and non-Willabeth stories, mind you). I also completely disagree with the other pairings for Elizabeth, like Barbossa or Beckett, simply based on how they have treated Elizabeth throughout the films (abuse, little respect, etc., though I absolutely agree Barbossa has evolved to be an ally to Elizabeth).
However, let me make one thing clear: I will respect anyone's choice of shipping/pairing as long as they respect mine. The only thing I ask is that you make your pairings/stories realistic and true to the POTC series, but even if you don't, I will still choose to respect how you choose to ship the characters of POTC. I think that this "shipper war" is absolutely ridiculous. Want to make your fan fictions Sparrabeth? Go ahead. Willabeth? Write 'em. Other pairings? Be my guest. Does it mean you have to read them? Nope. I choose not to read fan fictions that are not Willabeth shipped because that is my preference. Not only does it keep me from getting aggravated, but it also stops me from hurting the writer (not that I would ever write hurtful, hateful things to a writer, anyway) simply because I disagree with their pairing. Shipping can be done peacefully without drama and without hurting other people. We should all respect each other's feelings, beliefs, and choices, even in the fandom/fan fiction world. In this case, it's your choice as to who Elizabeth (or any other POTC character) should be with. Mine just happens to be Willabeth.
(This turned out to be more of an essay, but I hope this was a fun read! :P I also hope it gets my point across without being rude. Also, as a side note, this novel of an explanation really goes for every book, movie, TV show, etc. fandom out there. I just chose to write about POTC because that "shipper war" is the one I'm most familiar with.)
