There are a few challenges posted on the forum, so if anyone's interested in checking them out don't forget to visit...

STORY UPDATE 07 February 2013 Have altered and reposted chapter 8 of First Sacred Duty due to errors plus a missing scene...

UPDATE 28 September 2016: Am putting this at the top of the page so folks don't have to scroll all the way to the bottom. Though it probably seems like it, I haven't abandoned my stories. Any of you who have read through this whole page know about my then-80-year-old mother's cancer battle (no mean feat at any age) several years ago; as of spring 2016 she was still 'clean' but due to other health concerns (leaking heart valves, fluid retention, and kidney problems to name a few) was facing a heart valve replacement - the surgeon wanted to do open-heart and replace at least 3 valves but Mom said at her age no one was cracking open her chest. She finally agreed to do a cardiac catheterization to replace the valves they could do that way...in July '15, less than a week before the procedure was scheduled to take place, she fell and broke her femur. To make this a much shorter story than it truly is, she came through the surgery to repair the break and was successfully over halfway through inpatient rehab at the local nursing homes when the doctor/"medical director" there arbitrarily ordered her diuretics withheld because, we were told, "her edema is resolved". This was done despite our warning the staff that the primary reason for the diuretics was to control fluid buildup in her lungs and around her heart PLUS her cardiologist calling and telling them to NOT take her meds away. (Pseudo-doc never even deigned to talk to her cardiologist, by the way.) Within a week she'd gained over 20 pounds, went into cardiac and renal failure, and spent over 8 weeks in the hospital where scads of real doctors tried to undo the damage the nursing home quack had wrought. She died a little over a week before Thanksgiving last year - thankfully we were at least able to get her home a few days before she passed, even though most of her time here was spent only semiconscious, so she didn't die in a hospital (which she'd always hated the idea of) and the nursing home didn't get their meat-hooks into her again...Oh, there's actually a punchline to this whole thing - despite my writing a letter after the first bill came letting the billing department know that I would NOT pay the doctor who caused Mom's death, they're STILL sending bills wanting me to pay him. Since he's the "medical director" of the nursing home as well as a practicing physician at the hospital closest to the nursing home, he originally was "caring" for her when she was first hospitalized. So basically he wants to be paid for causing her hospitalization and death. Part of me hopes he's not holding his breath waiting for the money and part of me hopes he is...

ANYhow...with keeping up work, getting Mom to all the various appointments, etc., I had let these stories really slide by the wayside, and I apologize for that...the first couple months after Mom's death were really rough (Thanksgiving, Xmas, New Years', and her birthday all lumped in there one on top of the other didn't help), but things have kinda leveled out now so presently the only "distraction" is my work schedule (very busy, sometimes hectic, but not unbearable - if I've never mentioned it I'm a housekeeper/critter sitter/house sitter/Jane of many trades). Best way I've found to unwind after work - or while at one of the various houses I'm at while taking care of critters) is working on the stories in question. Still having trouble getting AP restarted but am chipping away at my blocks {going back to previous chapters glitch-hunting and re-familiarizing myself with D'von and company is helping}, FSD is going fairly smoothly at present {think chapter 11 is ready for posting, 12 is maybe 1/3 done}, and when I get stumped on those I've got a revisitation/revision of Perceptions in the works. {When using the browser on my tablet, though (Amazon Fire), the FF site sometimes goes glitchy and won't let me edit chapters, which delayed posting FSD chapter 11 by about a week. Anyone else ever experience that with their tablets and/or mobile devices? Near as I can tell, the FF mobile option only lets you read posted stories, not access stuff for editing...

Story Summaries
Star Trek: Enterprise
Accidental Parent (AP): Following the rescue of an alien child Malcolm is unexpectedly thrust into the role of surrogate parent. As the crew seeks to reunite the boy with his people his gifts and abilities are revealed, and it soon becomes evident that even if they find his home, separating the child from his new guardian may quite literally prove impossible. IN PROGRESS
The First Sacred Duty (SD): After being attacked an alien vessel sends out a distress signal, but when the Enterprise crew tries to help they are mistaken for the attackers. For this species only blood will buy forgiveness; unfortunately for Lt. Reed much of it will be his. IN PROGRESS
Holism: Malcolm contemplates the women in his life. COMPLETE
A Sin To Tell A Lie?: It was probably not a good idea to lie to your captain, but sometimes it just had to be done… post-Minefield oneshot. COMPLETE
Stroker: Sequel to A Sin To Tell A Lie? Jon and Trip accidently discover Malcolm's secret but their plans to have a bit of fun with him are spoiled by an alien attack. COMPLETE
Perceptions: Alternate scene from Affliction/Divergence, when Malcolm is bringing Trip over from Columbia. COMPLETE. (Deathfic—proceed with caution)

Still in the planning stages:
Siren's Song (tentative title only). Malcolm versus an alien ocean.
23 February 2016: An expanded, alternate ending to Perceptions is in the works...
Untitled: Can the world stand yet another "possessed by aliens" story?

28 November 2008: Have been a visitor to this site innumerable times but only just recently decided to jump in and sign up. Am hoping to get a couple "ST: Enterprise" stories far enough along to put up before too much longer—am not new to writing stuff but am new to the idea that any of my stuff might actually be post-worthy. Am not just a Trekker (or Trekkie, if you prefer); I also enjoy Diagnosis Murder and CSI, and hope to get a chance over the winter to actually get enough writing done to perhaps post some stories in those categories as well. So many plot bunnies, so little time...sigh. I'm hoping that there are enough patient, helpful souls out there to make this a pleasant experience for me, and I hope also to weave some stories that the fanfic community will find worthy of attention...

05 December: Thanks to all who've read the beginning of "Accidental Parent". Let me reassure all you "torment the Brit" fans that, though I haven't got it on paper yet—and yes, I'm afraid I write most stuff "long-hand" and then type it up—Malcolm's gonna go through some unpleasantness before it's all over. And really, would we want it any other way? I didn't think so ;-)

17 December: Thanks to all who've reviewed so far! I wasn't sure whether I'd wind up sticking around so held off on putting any personal info on my profile page, but guess now is as good a time as any...I'm a housekeeper/petsitter who is old enough to remember going to Star Trek conventions and encountering fanfiction in pamphlet form. (I can't be the only one who remembers fanzines, can I?) Though my computer skills are adequate I'm not tech-saavy by any means. (Which reminds me—if I have a tech question and get no response from the site, may I throw myself on your collective mercy?)

16 January 2009: Hope not to disappoint, but am so far vastly unhappy with chunks of chapter 8...it may not be up until very late this weekend unless I can get it hammered into a shape at least vaguely resembling a coherent installment.

26 January: Chapter 9 of AP should be up in a couple more days, and hopefully Chapter 2 of Sacred Duty will be ready for public viewing by this weekend. (Supposed to get oodles of snow tomorrow night so if I'm snowed in I'll have more time to write, which can only help.) I've been refining the dialogue in previous chapters of AP (THANK YOU SERIT!!) and will perhaps get the amendments posted this weekend too...

15 February: Next installments for AP and SD are both up (for better or worse). I've categorized SD as general only because I'm not sure whether it's going to wind up being considered H/C or Angst. It's definitely far more serious than AP. It's also going more slowly than AP so there will no doubt be longer lulls between chapters...sorry 'bout that. Also, I didn't anticipate AP being this long, so thanks SOOO much for sticking with it, and for the reviews! Am trying to decide how much I can say to put folks at ease without spoiling the ending for you, so hmm...okay, here it goes:
1) it is NOT going to turn into a deathfic for any of the main characters,
2) yes, Malcolm's gonna have some problems,
3) yes, there will be sections which could be considered 'angsty', I suppose, and
4) no, Malcolm doesn't throw Hoshi out an airlock ;-)
Additionally, a camisole comes into play in Chapter 10, along with Crewman Culter AND Ensign Sato. (Hee hee hee...Happy Valentine's Day!)

06 March: Things have been busier than expected as of late, so the next installments of AP and SD will be delayed, probably by a couple weeks. Don't know if you want to consider it a "mini-hiatus" or what. I usually dislike the term "hiatus", as television execs paste that term on a show that they're gonna cancel—they start off saying the show is "on hiatus" and it almost never comes back. Rest assured, though, that D'von and David are not on THAT kind of hiatus...they WILL be back! I'm just swamped at present and haven't had enough keyboard time to really do them justice. I did go back to previous chapters of AP and do a little dialogue polishing, which I'm hoping to get posted before St. Patrick's Day...Thank you for your kind words and helpful reviews in the past, and for your patience now...

10 April: Didn't want folks thinking I'd abandoned my stories...am still working on AP and SD when time allows, but it's been slow going and local events have not been terribly conducive to writing happy fluffy Lehrite scenes (or much of anything else, for that matter). Definitely not in a "whump Malcolm" frame of mind, either. Still kinda creeped out having Binghamton make world headlines, especially for something so senseless...am trying to make myself sit down and write some D'von scenes just because I need the morale boost...sleepy-snuggles would feel REAL good about now...

13 June: For those who have been patiently (or impatiently) waiting for chapter 11 of AP, I've been working on it whenever time allows, and think I am close to posting—provided, of course, that I can access the Document Manager to see if the last set of additions/edits actually saved or if I have to redo everything (again. sigh.) There will also be some minor changes to the previous chapters as I've been ferreting out tiny typos and microglitches—will let folks know when the changes are posted. Had hoped to work on SD while at my most recent crittersitting gig but it has had to take a back seat while I'm here because, although I do have computer and internet access at the llama farm, I'm using an iMac here and all my SD stuff is saved on IBM-formatted discs. So it goes. If AP's next installment doesn't make it online this weekend, it should certainly be up by Father's Day. Thanks for sticking with me! Or with D'von and Malcolm, (and/or David,) as the case may be.

16 June: Hokay...Chapter 11 is officially up, ready or not. Edits to previous chapters are not but soon will be—will make a notation in the summary when that happens. Chapter 12 is in the works, but I remind everyone that my online time is limited so it may take a while for that one to get posted, too. (Same goes for SD, but I WILL be putting up the next chapter, maybe by the end of this month or the beginning of August. Don't give up on it, okay?) Thanks for your continued patience!

10 August: Have only just noticed that there are a few glitches in Chapter 11 of AP. They're small, but they're bugging me, so will repair and repost ASAP. Still working on Ch. 12; it's not finished yet, but I've pledged to get chapter 3 of SD finished and up before posting more to AP. On the plus side, SD's next installment only needs a little more tinkering (I hope).

17 August: I'm not sure what the proper etiquette/netiquette is for acknowledging being added to people's Favorites/Story/Author Alerts, but I feel I've been more than a little remiss in thanking those who have done so. To those of you who have found my stuff worthy of such attention, I thank you. And to those who have read my stories but haven't added them to your "lists", thank you for reading what I've put out there. (Bet you thought I was gonna say something nasty, huh?) And a HUGE thank you to those who have reviewed, corrected, nudged, coerced, answered questions, and otherwise aided and abetted me. The guilty parties know who they are, I'm sure. AP chapters 12 and 13 are still in the works, SD 4 and 5 are being buffed and polished, and Siren's Song is on the way, though it may have to be a late entry for Drown Malcolm Month since I doubt it'll be finished by November.

15 October: No, I haven't gone totally dormant...and I haven't dropped off the face of the planet. The next chapters are taking longer than I'd hoped mostly because life keeps getting in the way. I won't give up if you don't... PS: Got word from a fellow FFN member that they'd picked up a virus, possibly/probably from the site, and a little while ago I got a "blocked access for your protection" message from the antivirus program when I came to FFN. Anybody else having problems?

29 October: It was recently suggested to me that FSD was perhaps misrated—I had it at "M" because I thought the language (and violence to come) might be problematic for younger readers. After giving it a little thought I've decided to change the rating to "T", figuring that if complaints come flooding in I can change the rating back. Thanks to all who've read/reviewed and double thanks for being patient while awaiting the next chapter(s). They really are on the way!

22 January 2010: Although real life and a bout of writer's block have been getting in the way over the last few months I haven't forgotten about nor abandoned my fics...seems like when I have time to write nothing comes, and when the ideas start flowing I'm nowhere near a notebook or computer...am trying to get my planets realigned or resynchronize my brain waves or whatever I need to do to get things going again.

13 May: I really hadn't intended for so much time to pass between chapters, and sincerely apologize for the long wait. Just getting ready to put up chapter 12 of AP, and have reposted 11 after realizing that I'd forgotten to delete editing notes that I'd made to myself. At least I hope I deleted all of them...

20 May: Chapter 4 of SD is up, as is chapter 12 of AP. Hopefully any glitches are too small to be seen with the naked eye, but if you do happen to spot something amiss please let me know.

22 June: While reviewing posted chapters of SD in an attempt to dislodge my writer's block I noticed a few typos and misspelled words so went back and fixed them. Hope I got them all. Didn't change anything that impacted the story, just fixed some spelling and spacing errors...had to do the same with AP. Sorry I let those glitches get by me—must have forgotten to run spellcheck...

21 Dec: As usual, real life keeps getting in the way of the fics. That doesn't mean that they've fallen entirely by the wayside, though, just that they've been delayed. Was hoping to have something (heck anything) to post long ago, but aside from Holism it hasn't happened. With a tiny bit of luck (and a tiny bit seems to be all I possess at any one time) I'll have something up before year's end...

10 January 2011: Okay, it probably goes without saying that no new chapters have gone up yet. sigh. One thing I have accomplished, though, was the fixing of some typos/glitches in the first five chapters of SD that were staring me in the face mocking me. Just finished reposting—no huge changes, just a few spots were spaces were needed, a misspelled/misused word or two that snuck past me, a little thinning of Trip's accent where needed, and a couple tiny changes of wording/phrasing in one or two sentences.

05 February: Just patrolled SD chapter 6 and (big surprise here) spotted an 'oops' in the form of a repeated sentence that should have been deleted in the final edit. Fixed and reposted. Next chapter of AP nearing completion but things have been kind of squirrelly here lately—my sister recently fell down a flight of stairs at the group home where she lives and broke her right arm and the big toe of her right foot, so she spent her birthday in the hospital and we spent a good deal of time shuttling back and forth for visits. Hopefully February will be a little less eventful than January was...

29 March: PERSONAL REQUEST; Butch R., a neighbor of mine, has been having a rough time the past few weeks trying to care for his elderly mother and has been pretty much running himself ragged. He was able to get her admitted to the hospital the end of last week but he became ill over the weekend and was taken in the ambulance to the hospital Sunday afternoon after he began having difficulty breathing--he has had asthma problems for some time. They think he may have had a heart attack, and he's not doing well: we live in a rural area and there was an extra half-hour delay in getting him to the hospital while the ambulance crew waited for a paramedic to arrive from Montrose (PA).

His girlfriend Mary Lou is totally beside herself and has health problems that are not being helped by the stress of this situation. Would appreciate it if you could remember this couple in your thoughts and prayers, and if you have a prayer list at your respective houses of worship could you please add them to it? Thanks so much...

28 November: Spotted a few things in SD chapter 7 that needed tweaking so fixed and reposted, then fixed about 5 more times because the whole 'vanishing spaces' problem flared up again. As to personal stuff, our friend Butch has made a recovery nothing short of miraculous; it was a heart attack, and he was in bad enough shape that the doctors felt the best thing to do was to disconnect the ventilator and 'let him go'. He proved them wrong, came home after 6 weeks, and is now back to work and feeling great. Had something happen a lot closer to home that has kept me moving throughout the summer—early this past spring my mother was diagnosed with large b-cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma and so we had a busy schedule of doctors' appointments, scans, chemo/antigen therapy sessions, ambulatory surgery procedures, one hospitalization, etc. Am pleased to be able to report that the last PET scan came back clean—though it's too soon to use the word 'cured', the tumors are presently gone. Adverse reaction to the chemo was minimal, with the expected hair loss coming just before her second treatment and only 2 weekends spent feeling nauseous out of 6 chemo sessions. (Timeline on those was chemo/rituxan infusion, wait 21 days, then another dose.) So yeah, folks, miracles do happen...

16 November 2012: Yeah, I know...it's been a year since I've updated this page and at least that long since any new chapters have come up. As per usual, real life seems to have spent an inordinate amount of time/energy interfering with writing and updating. Reader's Digest version - Mom's got a PET scan coming up in December to make sure the cancer hasn't snuck back. Physically she's pretty good, but emotionally we're both having ups and downs...my older sister passed away unexpectedly in July and we've both been coming to grips with that. A neighbor and dear friend lost her 33-yr-old son just a few weeks after Barb passed, plus her 35-yr-old son had a thyroid cancer scare right after that, so we've been trying to help with her family as well. Been kinda hard to get into 'writing mode' with the darkness that settled over me but it's diminished to occasional cloudiness, so I'm getting back to it as best I can. Can't quite get into a D'von frame of mind just yet (lord knows I'm trying) but edits on FSD chapters are proceeding slow but sure.

On a slightly brighter note, there has finally been a bit of traffic on my forum...as stupid as it may sound, that cheered me up a bit! Had all but given up on it and had even contemplated on more than one occasion just taking it down altogether, but now there are a couple challenges posted so I feel better about it now...

30 November: Have been trying to buckle down and get postable chapters up and have come to realize that there are glaring errors (including missing material) in chapter 8 of First Sacred Duty - will amend and repost as soon as chapter 9 is ready to go up so I can post both at pretty much the same time...

21 February 2013: Well...crap. Just realized that somehow I've (again) managed to put up a chapter loaded with glitches. Admittedly some (if not most) are of my own making, but there are at least 2 sentences that were present when I got ready to upload and now they're gone, making for a rather confusing paragraph. Will repair and repost ASAP (hopefully before the weekend)...

12 April 2014: I know I seem to have dropped off the face of the earth, but such is not the case. Though it's been close to 2 years since my sister's passing, I've found it difficult (until recently) to put pen to paper: my sister was mentally retarded (though I think the "PC" term nowadays is "developmentally disabled") due to a brain injury in infancy - caused by cranial stenosis - and had defied quite spectacularly the initial diagnosis that she would be a 'vegetable' her entire life, destined to never be able to walk, talk, or feed herself. She was very high-functioning, with the mental age of maybe 5-8 years, and her speech patterns were a partial inspiration for how the character of D'von speaks. Consequently, writing scenes with him became all but impossible immediately following her passing because it was too much of a reminder that I will never again hear her voice in this lifetime. For a while I couldn't even read the stuff I'd already posted.

The wound is less raw now, and it's getting easier to regain the flow when trying to channel my favorite Lehrite. I've also begun making progress with FSD, and have even revisited the bowling sequel to A Sin To Tell A Lie, managing to take the dozen or so paragraphs that have lain dormant for ages and turn them into something resembling an honest-to-god story. It started off as simple humor but seemed to need a bit of an edge to make it interesting, so now we've got shoot-outs and explosions, drama and a pinch of angst...hopefully only running 2 chapters (3 at the most)...

I couldn't believe how shamefully the Enterprise writers abandoned Malcolm at that mess hall table in "E2". So here's my humble attempt at giving him some kind of resolution he can live with.
