I hate to do this. I REALLY hate to do this. To all of my beloved Shadow of the Hero readers, I'm sorry, but that story is going on semi permanent hiatus. Again. I'm NOT abandoning it, just to be clear. I've just reached a point in the past year where writing it has become a chore, a thing of tedium, a source of much anxiety and self-reproach. And it's completely KILLING my love of fanfiction.
I originally joined this website as a fun hobby, a way of release and connecting with others who share my love of all things fiction. And now because of ONE story, I've allowed it to consume me to the point where I'm having a hard time writing ANYTHING. I just can't shake the fear that I'm not living up to the expectations of my readers (which is true, I guess) but the burden is even worse for being something I've imposed on myself. It makes me long for the old days when I restricted myself only to oneshots, and I always felt immensely guilty whenever I strayed. As a result there's a whole backlist of story ideas from various fandoms saved in my computer that should have seen the light of day long ago.
So I'm giving up. For now. As of this moment I'm going to set aside Shadow of the Hero and focus only on what I actually WANT to write. If every once in awhile I get a hankering for Link and Zelda again, then of course I'll return to those unfinished themes, but as of right now I'm making a promise to myself. No more deadlines. No more anxieties. No more forcing myself to tap away at something that my heart's not into, which in turn results in a subpar chapter that neither I nor my readers will be happy with.
Again, I'm sorry, but there it is. I'm hardly the first author to have pulled something like this, so I hope that excuses me in part. At the very least I made it to over eighty (decent!) chapters in a one hundred themes list, which I consider an accomplishment all on its own, and I can't thank everyone enough for all of your support from the very beginning. The review count you've given me is staggering, the endless encouragement likewise. I bow down to you all.
Just another wanna-be writer with a lot of time on my hands. If you want to know how I found this site, you can take a look at my profile pic. I haven't written anything for Bleach, but that first glimpse of Rukia standing before the moon was what led me to all things anime and manga, which in turn led me here. As a kid I used to amuse myself by imagining stories in my head involving my favorite games and books, but I never knew there was a name for it... Fanfiction!
I mostly like writing oneshots for whatever fandom I'm currently obsessed with. Every once in awhile I might get ambitious and delve into a multi-chapter, but ONLY if I know for certain that I can finish what I started. I know how it feels to find an amazing story only to have it end halfway through because the author lost interest or vanished off the radar, and I will never let that happen to my stories or my readers (big fat lie, see above). So if you ever notice my profile become mysteriously inactive for an absurdly long time, then you can safely assume I'm dead or have amnesia or something equally dire. But DO feel free to PM me if you want to know my progress on a particular story, and I'll respond when I have a chance.
Reviews and Pairings
I admit that I am very lazy when it comes to reviewing. When I read a story I like, it tends to go straight on Favorites or Story Alert, same with authors. Because of this I try my best not to beg for reviews on my own stories. Equivalent Exchange, after all! If a story REALLY blows my mind, then expect an absurdly long review filled with nothing but my fangirling, since I'm apparently incapable of giving strong praise without melting in a puddle of goo. I'm not crazy or a stalker, I promise! I just tend to get very excited about things.
And as for yaoi, I'm okay with it. I prefer canon pairings for the most part, but a good many of the stories in my Favorites consist of yaoi fics that struck an emotional fan-girly chord, so obviously I'm not as picky as I like to pretend. Some of the best authors on this site manage to incorporate yaoi in a way that is tasteful and true to the fandom and characters, which I find very impressive.
Don't hesitate. When the time comes, just act - Star Fox: Assault (my personal mantra now, since being horribly indecisive is a bad trait of mine)
We stand in awe before that which cannot be seen. And we respect with every fiber that which cannot be explained - Bleach
Whenever there is a meeting, a parting is sure to follow. However, that parting need not last forever. Whether a parting be forever or merely for a short time...that is up to you - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
I believe in God, but I also believe in morality, which is doing what is right regardless of what I am told. Not in religion, which is doing what I am told regardless of what is right - Anonymous
That moment when you finish a book, look around, and realize that everyone is carrying on with their lives as though you haven't just experienced emotional trauma at the hands of a paperback - Anonymous
That was the thing about Fate. All it did was set the path before you. It left you the free will to decide whether or not to walk it. In the end there was no one to blame but yourself, and no more crueler fate than the freedom to be responsible for every choice you make - Rose Zemlya, Reconciliation (EPIC Legend of Zelda fanfic!)
"Truth is stranger than fiction," as the old saying goes. When I watch a documentary, I can't help crying, and then I think to myself "Fiction can't compete with this." But when I mentioned this to a veteran manga artist friend of mine, he said that "Fiction brings salvation to characters in stories that would otherwise have no salvation at all." His words strengthened the conviction of my manga spirit - Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist Vol. 12
You know how sometimes you meet someone, and they're just so beautiful...but then you actually talk to them and five minutes later they're as dull as a brick? And then there's other people where you meet them and you think, "Not bad, they're okay." But then you get to know them, and their face just sort of...becomes them. And they turn into something so...so beautiful. Rory is the most beautiful man I've ever met - Doctor Who, The Girl Who Waited
The badger is a solitary creature known for its placid nature, not for its bravery, its intelligence or its ambition. We are peaceful and even-tempered, diligent and steadfast, generous and caring and humble. And often we are pushed to the background because of the very traits that make us so wonderful in the first place.
But do not let our shy and laid-back temperaments fool you. When faced with true danger, a badger does not simply lie down and accept defeat. We do not tremble and weep and hang our heads in shame when the prideful and the oppressive look down on us. Our hides are thick, our claws sharp, and we have been known to kill both snakes and lions to defend our territory and loved ones. Back us into a corner at your own risk—you will see how ferocious we are and what we are capable of.
I am a badger. I am a Hufflepuff. And damn proud of it!
