My daughter got me reading Twilight in November, 2008, and I enjoyed the books (well, I kinda think of Breaking Dawn as AU) but was left wanting more. So, I sought out fanfic in March, 2009.
I am an employed parent and full-time grad student, and time for reading is limited. So I only read fics that are recommended highly, usually by authors that I really like. Of course, there are a couple dozen of those now... I started with Vamps only, but now prefer All Human.
I prefer stories with mature content, including sexually graphic fics. My favourite pairing is Jasper/Edward, but I will try any -ship, plot, or setting. My primary requirement is that the writing be good.
If you have a great idea for a story, please, please proof read it, or get a beta or two. I can handle an occasional typo, but consistently sloppy work is too distracting, and I won't read it; I just can't. Use a dictionary and/or grammar guide (there are free ones all over the web) if you are not strong in this area. Some of my personal peeves are:
peak / peek / pique
bear / bare
threw / through / trough / though / thought
reign / rein / rain
grit / gritted
bored / board / borne / bore
lay / lie / lied / laid / lain / laying
breath / breathe
were / we’re
there / they’re / their
loose / lose
past / passed
then / than
manner / manor
drag / dragged / drug / drugged
REVIEWS: I always review. Well, almost always. I do most of my reading on my iPhone, so I don't tend to leave lengthy commentaries, just a brief comment on something that caught my attention. I may even just say "good chapter" or something. But I will generally say _something_. I know that this is the only recompense available to authors, and not leaving a review is akin to not reciprocating for an orgasm. ;)
However, I will not leave a negative review. I might ask a question relating to clarity or coherence, but I will never flame an author for bad writing or objectionable content; I'll just stop reading. I am an old hippie, and have a shockingly high tolerance for content. I am fine with slash, BDSM, polyamory, hedonism, etc. I will not read gratuitously painful content, ongoing abuse (sexual or otherwise), or paedophilia, other than as backstory. Yes, I read The Perfect Wife and The Red Line. I consider both to be well written stories of growth and redemption. I know that others may not agree, and that's fine, but don't judge me for my position. I don't find rape, abuse, or sexual exploitation to be arousing in any way, but life is sometimes difficult, and shit happens (and has happened to me). If the story is about overcoming these things, then, yeah, I can handle it.
Oh, and I use the Favourite button to flag stories that I want to keep track of, not as actual favourites. So, while some of the stories in My Favourites are fantabulous, others are just there so that I can find them again. I may or may not have read or even started them, so please don't consider My Favourites to be recommendations in any way.
Peace, Love, & Tolerance,
