Views on fanfiction: My fanfic preferences have changed over the years, and I can't be bothered going and deleting things from my favorites list. Now days I normally prefer a story that seems to give an accurate representation of characters and their reactions to events. A believable progression to power is also something thats preferred, but not always required.
Harry potter fanfic tropes. The manipulative Dumbledore is such a common theme in so many fanfics it's just lost it's appeal, and is very rarely done well. This can be said of many of the common things found in fanfics, which is sad.
I'm normally a sucker for time travel fics, simply to see a hopefully more mature harry going through the Hogwarts events, but unless there's some new twist to events that deviates from cannon somehow, there's not really much point to them.
Fics that start at the beginning of the stories tend to lose their steam, and fail to capture the psych of an eleven year old mind, but can still be an amusing way to pass the time.
Can't say I've read a lot of it, seeing as so much is slash, which is something I try and avoid. That aside, I'm a bit disappointed at the lack of fanfics in the current bleach arc, but oh well. I don't think I've read a fic that Ichigo goes to the academy that he's graduated yet. Which is disappointing as they seem like such a fun idea.
General fanfic views:
Slash is one thing that will turn me off a fanfic of any type. Not that I have anything against it, it's just not something I want to read about in any detail.
Excessive bashing, which is normally accompanied by a 'brilliant' protagonist that has all the right answers and is never wrong. There are often tell tail signs in the early chapters of if this is going to happen, normally in the form of epiphanies and jumps in logic. If the behavior of characters is so bad that they need to be bad, then fix them so that they actually represent human beings. Else it's akin to picking on the poor retarded kid at school, which isn't something to be proud of.
I've considered writing my own story for the site, but am just far to lazy to do so, maybe one day, but I doubt it.
If I do it'll probably be a harry potter fic involving the use of science to improve magic, and make a bunch of cool new spells. With the power he knows not being nuclear fusion, anti-matter or something else like that. Carbon nano tubes would probably also be involved somehow, but I haven't given the idea much more thought beyond that.
